Jason Cayless is past it. Just give me back J. Mannah for Cayless in 2011 and we'll be fine. Depending upon Mateo, beyond 2010 I would even go for O'Donnell.

The sad fact is that the list of players who are free to shop around would not attract any interest. Not sure it is going to help unfortunately.

Why not? :?

Because the only way he's going to actually LEAVE is if someone else offers him a comparable contract.

He's on about 100k per season here, and looks like he's not good enough for first grade. So unless (i) we buy out his contract for next season or (ii) someone else actually signs him, he'll be here.

And, if we buy out his contract, then it counts against our salary cap for next season anyway, so the whole exercise was pointless.

The biggest issue appears to be the value attributed to the players, which as Stagger suggested is nowehere near what they should be on. I think that it will be difficult to move these players on as they were signed to overs by Mr Personality.

Now, if the Dragons or whoever sees something that means they will take them so be it, but I would guess that they saw these players as backstops and towards the bottom end of their roster.

maybe we'll get lucky. Hages becomes coach of Manly and signs all these players off us!!!

But seriously, it is still better that Parra subsidises their pay for them to goto another team.

e.g. Weller - $100K : goes to Souths for $70K - we pay the $30K then at least we have $70K freed up.

Multiply this by a few players and it is enough to cement a decent player or upgrade a junior.

Furthermore, Players do not want to be in Wenty even if they are on big money.

Coz at the end of their contract, they'll be lucky to get anything

You're right about that - and in the end it might just be what drives some players to take a lesser deal and go elsewhere.

If a player "finds" a 70k deal elsewhere, and decides they'd like to take it for the chance to actually play, then it does NOT cost us anything. It's only if we 'sack them' and then they're picked up by someone else.

The problem with the idea of paying 30k for a 100k player who no longer plays with us is that it only leaves 70k leftover. And a team MUST have 25 players as part of their top 25 unless a special exception occurs. Which would mean that you'd have to sign someone for the minimum (50-55k) and then you'd only be freeing up about 15k.

So let's say we ditched Hauraki and Oake, and brought in 2 guys at minimum contract (Robinson and Horo for example) - that only gives us an extra 30k to fiddle with. It's not really that helpful. OR we could bring in one minimum contract guy, and it leaves us 85k to offer someone - not going to land us any big stars...

Whereas if Hauraki and Oake both find deals elsewhere and are happy to go, we now have 200k to play with - or, one minimum guy, and 145k to offer to someone.
145k is slightly more appealing I would think?

Big Ben frees up almost as much cash as Oake and Hauraki combined...

Maybe the Broncos will take Wellar? They took Ben Teo, as useless as he is....

ESL would probably have him, or the Roosters

Maybe we should offer Weller an upgrade, then Manly will try and trump us ? ;-)

:-k

hmm... all very interesting.

Im all for a cleanout if it means juniors coming up - i hate it when a coach pretty much swaps all locals for players bought from other clubs

I agree however I think with the current stock of forwards, we would be going nowhere fast. I'm happy with DA's signings from other clubs so far. And Poore nailed Crocker last night which made me :D
