I keep hearing this on the Matty John's show

If you insult someone and call them a "cat" in Oz what does it mean?

They’re scared or afraid of conflict / engaging in something.

Which is also why Wests chose the tiger instead of the magpie as their moniker.

When I was in high school in the seventies, "cat" was used as a derogatory term along the lines of "fa**ot".

Back in the 60's cat was a term for someone who was cool.
However in the 70 s and 80 s it took on the more derogatory term as in insult to gay men.

I always thought it was because they were saying that if you got in a fight you weren't going to throw punches but rather scratch like a cat.

Probably just a generic light-hearted insult moreso than anything particular.

For mine, I always felt it was more of soft/weak/precious meaning.

Of course we do.

We do that a lot.

For example, not uncommon to call your mate a merkin.

It’s also not uncommon to call someone you don’t like a merkin.

But if you’re the one being called a merkin, you instantly know if it’s a good or a bad thing.
