Guys I’ve had a quick scan and can’t find who the referee will be? We can have an open free flowing game or a penalty- athon stop start affair?
Having said that we should not give the nominated ref ammo to award penalties against us - with unforced errors.
Got to be on our game from the get go..

Be nice to go into the bye 4 points clear at the top
It would indeed. Some commentator mentioned that we still had our original 13. No injuries (maybe a couple of niggles) but no real injuries.

I bloody wish FT. I'd like to think we are more disciplined than other teams.

State of Origin selection the motivator for St George Illawarra ahead of Penrith Panthers clash
  • Dragon's Den

  • Dragons coach Paul McGregor believes his players will be inspired to play their best football against Penrith on Saturday night with a number of players in the mix to play State of Origin football given their final chance to impress.

NSW coach Brad Fittler will name his first Blues team for Origin I at the completion of round 12. Given St George Illawarra’s outstanding start to the season, catapulting the red V to the top of the NRL table, the Dragons could find themselves providing several players to representative football.

Tyson Frizell and Ben Hunt are considered certainties for NSW and Queensland respectively. But a number of other players are believed to be a chance given their form and Fittler’s desire to put his own stamp on the team.

Jack de Belin, Tariq Sims and Paul Vaughan could be part of the NSW forward pack alongside hooker Cameron McInnes who is in a battle with South Sydney No.9 Damien Cook. While Euan Aitken has plenty of admirers and could be chosen in the centres.

McGregor said after the 25-18 win over Canberra in Mudgee on Sunday Origin selection would be a big motivator ahead of the Panthers clash.

“It’s important to win at any time of the year [but] it’s important to win after a loss. And we know what we’ve got coming,” he said.

“I don’t know how many [players we’ll lose to Origin] obviously. Next week we play another quality team the week before the team gets picked so I’m sure all the players in my shed will be really keen to go out there and play at their best. In front of what will be a good crowd, the selectors, Freddy and co. Give themselves every opportunity to make that Blues jumper.

“One would think Benny is a shoe-in for Queensland. We’ll worry about Origin when it comes up, to be honest. When we know a little bit more about it. We’re certainly putting things in place with our young guys.”

Part of that plan has been rolled out in recent weeks with five different young players chosen in the Dragons’ No.17 jersey, with two making their NRL debuts as McGregor looks to ensure his youngsters will be ready if called upon.

Hame Sele came off the bench against the Warriors, while Jacob Host played against the Roosters. Young hooker Reece Robson was handed an NRL debut in the big win over Melbourne at Kogarah, with Zac Lomax earning his maiden NRL appearance a week later against Souths.

Young forward Blake Lawrie was included in the team that beat the Raiders, giving McGregor options should St George Illawarra lose a number of senior players as expected.

The Dragons could also lose Gareth Widdop, James Graham and Jason Nightingale to the Denver Test.

Gerard (penalty Broncos) Sutton is the referee. We are wearing the alternate jersey this weekend. I highly recommend making it Broncos colours. That should guarantee victory.

A few things worry me:

1. the Dragons have a pretty fair record against Penrith (particularly away from home)...as the idiom goes "one game closer to a loss on the balance of possibilities".

2. the side is showing definite signs of fatigue, and it seems obvious that some are playing with injuries...especially Graham looks tired.

3. Merrin FINALLY reverting back to his correct position (prop).

Lomax out with a hand injury, no word on how long he wil be out for. In any case thats almost 6 weeks or so with about 4 mins of game time.
Why do i have this feeling there's something amiss with him seperate to this injury? Not even a game in JF to keep up some kind of match fitness.
Garrick bought in as the #22, but I hope he prints a copy of the team sheet now, as i doubt he will be there after tomorrows first cut.
Herbert is still out injured I believe so i guess thats why Garrick got the nod.

Jimmy this is glass half empty stuff. You're avatar is what you need mate! JDB, Vaughan, Ah Mau and Graham will make a mess of Merrin and his cohorts....sorry, just had a few beers and feeling good.

No laughing matter for Dragons trying to stop Campbell-Gillard
Send via Email
There were some quirky one-liners about Reagan Campbell-Gillard flying thick and fast underneath WIN Stadium this week.

Some of the St George Illawarra forwards had finished their video on Campbell-Gillard a few hours earlier and were still trying to work out how to stop him.

While being interviewed about his 150th NRL game against his former club Penrith, Jeremy Latimore had no shortage of teammates trying to throw his concentration.

And almost always the conversation would turn to Penrith's chief enforcer.

"Jimmy Graham reckons he's going out there to turn one on and is going after Campbell-Gillard,'' said Latimore, as Graham loomed and pretended to ask a question.

"That's what he said this morning.''

Graham smiled and walked off before he turned and pleaded: "Please don't put that in.''

A smiling Latimore then fired back: "Are you scared of 'Reg'? You were talking it up this morning.''

On another occasion, Tariq Sims, Campbell-Gillard's cousin, had something to say before Latimore said: "I'm talking about your better-playing cousin, Reggie.

"I'd say Tariq has the bigger hit, but don't quote me because I don't want Reg coming after me.''

Latimore was on the Penrith bench with Campbell-Gillard when he made his debut in 2015, and had nothing but praise for the Panthers junior.

The battle between the Dragons' brilliant forward pack and the Panthers big boys - led by moustached monster Campbell-Gillard - will be dynamite in the middle of a packed Panthers Stadium.

"Reg has come a long way the last couple of years, and even just watching the clips of him, he comes out of the line and tries to hurt blokes,'' Latimore said.

"He's making a statement and he deserves Origin selection next week.

"In [Jersey] Flegg he was always a good player but could be timid at times. Since he's come into first grade, his confidence has grown and he's believing in his ability.

"He's always had a big body and he's playing some really good football at the moment.''

Panthers teammate James Tamou has achieved everything in rugby league but found himself studying video of his 24-year-old teammate who is all but certain to get his first Blues jersey next Monday.

"Reg has been unreal, everything he does, his runs, his hits, he's got a mind for footy, has a massive engine, and he's someone you love watching,'' Tamou told Fairfax Media.

"He will thrive in Origin and love being on that stage. He'll eat it up.

"All pre-season, all I did was watch him on the video.

"It sounds funny coming from an older bloke and doing what I've done, but that's the type of player he is. It's a front-rower's mentality, someone might get hyped over a big step, but I get pumped for some of his hits and runs.''

NRL Power Rankings: Panthers make a statement, Manly starting to stir
Campbell-Gillard is set to be picked for NSW, as is David Klemmer, with Aaron Woods, Dragons prop Paul Vaughan and even Trent Merrin all vying for the other props spots.

Having already toured with the Kangaroos, Campbell-Gillard did not train until Thursday after he took advantage of the nine-day turnaround and had some wisdom teeth removed.

Latimore has played at five different NRL clubs and remains unsigned beyond this year.

He is keen to play on and if he does it will only be at the Dragons, a successful company who has a playing group he enjoys being around.

An educated man, Latimore has plans to move into mortgage broking once he hangs up the boots, and quipped give the recent decline in the Sydney housing market, he might need to punch out a few more years yet as a footballer.

A sellout crowd of around 21,500 is expected at the foot of the mountains for the top-of-the-table clash.

Origin selection race shifts into overdrive
Dragons Den News
r0_0_4428_2765_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

IN THE PICTURE: Ben Hunt and Paul Vaughan will be among a host of players pushing their final case for Origin selection on Saturday. Picture: AAP

CALL it a NSW possibles v probables. At least that’s how most fans are looking at Saturday’s top of the table clash between the Dragons and Panthers at Penrith Park.

While many tipped both sides to push for a top four finish this season, the Dragons have largely exceeded expectations in being standalone competition leaders after 11 rounds.

With a bye to follow next week, Paul McGregor’s men could shoot four points clear at the top of the ladder with a win on Saturday heading into what will be a demanding rep season.

With no less than 12 Origin hopefuls in action right under the nose of Blues coach Brad Fittler, it’s easy to forget there are two competition points on the line.

While the Origin audition may be the major talking point among fans, former Dragons and NSW centre Mark Gasnier expects both sides’ primary focus to be on that crucial two competition points.

“There wouldn’t be a happier man than Brad Fittler,” Gasnier, who’ll be part of Fox League’s coverage of the match, said.

“I’m sure he’ll be watching very closely to see how certain players handle the pressure in a big game, in a pressure situation, knowing they could potentially be picked to play Origin.

“He’ll be watching with interest but, I know when I played, you can’t get too far ahead of yourself so I don’t think the players will have that in their mind.

“They’ll know it’s going to be a very, very hard game.”

Gasnier was part of winning series in 2004 and 2005 – the former alongside Fittler – where in-form Sydney clubs dominated the Blues squad.

With the Dragons and Panthers running one and two, Gasnier believes Fittler’s squad for game one could see a return to that winning formula.

“As long as it’s relevant to the team, club combinations, when those teams are winning, do help,” Gasnier said.

“There’s just that natural comfort, particularly in defence. If you’re defending on an edge, there’s a comfort in having your [club] teammate beside you.

“Even when you go into camp, there’s a comfort in having your teammates there.

“It all helps and Freddy will be ecstatic that the Dragons and Panthers are one and two will potentially provide a big chunk of players.”

The Dragons fell short in their last top-of-the table showdown against the Warriors in round seven, and Gasnier said they’ll need to go up a gear to knock off the Panthers at home.

“I think it’ll be very physical and I expect the Panthers to throw a lot of line-speed at them,” Gasnier said.

“If you look at the two games the Dragons have lost to Warriors, and then again against Souths, they weren’t far off the pace.

“They weren’t far off at all, but the other team was really up for it because of how they’ve been going all year.

“This will be something similar. If the Dragons aren’t up another level with their intent and purpose, the Panthers will fancy their chances, particularly out at Penrith in front of a packed house.”

This game will be a good gauge for both teams. I think the Panthers have done very well considering the injuries suffered, but their draw has been very kind so far.
Their wins have come against Tigers, Knights, Bulldogs, Titans, Eels (x2), Cowboys and Rabbits. They’ve dropped games to the Cowboys, Bulldogs, Sharks. Conversely, we’ve had minimal disruption to the squad through injury, but our wins have been over more worthy adversaries. Regardless of the outcome, I’ll be interested to see how the panthers perform in their tough second half of the draw.

I don't think we win this one, personally think Panthers are just too fresh right now with Clearly back from 8 weeks off and we are no doubt tiring. I will be happy with a competitive performance akin to the Warriors game

Good news is that we take first place into the bye no matter what (unless we are smashed which I doubt)

Well I believe we will win by 8.

Why do you say we are tired?
And why are the Panthers fresh?

Both teams play every week so why should the dragon's be suffering?

Should have phrased better, I meant to say I think they will be fresher with Clearly settling back in, and I think we are playing a harder brand of footy this season which is possibly tiring our forwards a bit at the moment.

I would not be surprised if we do win though, I'm just not necessarily expecting it this week
