Frizell: time for Ponga Origin talk over

    NSW forward Tyson Frizell (C) has come through a contact session, saying he'll play in Origin 1.
    NSW enforcer Tyson Frizell has declared the time for talking about Kalyn Ponga over, vowing it won't just be up to him to stop the Queensland superstar in State of Origin I.

    Frizell has been cleared to take his place on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium after taking part on Monday in his first contact session of the Blues' preparation.

    Until now, Frizell had been kept in cottonwool under concussion protocols after being knocked out eight days ago in a sickening head clash with St George Illawarra teammate Josh Dugan.

    He shed the non-contact bib during an opposed training session at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park.

    He will only have one more run alongside his right-edge teammates during Tuesday's captain's run at Suncorp.

    Frizell's build-up has been less than ideal, robbing him of time to gel with right-side partners Nathan Cleary, Josh Morris and Nick Cotric.

    It's significant given the Maroons are expected to focus their attack via their left edge through superstars Ponga and Cameron Munster.

    The Blues spent part of Monday's session simulating plays that Munster and Ponga were likely to employ on Wednesday.

    "They threw a couple of scenarios at us and it was just about getting into the grind of footy," Frizell said after the team touched down at Brisbane Airport.

    "We haven't had any sort of opposed work other than edge-on-edge.

    "We've done our homework. It's easy to say we know what to do.

    "It's just about going out there and doing it now. There's enough talk about those guys. We've got to shut them down and that's it."

    The Blues will head into the match as favourites and Frizell says the Maroons are "banking" on Munster and Ponga to spark them to victory on home soil.

    The Dragons' back-rower said he was alive to the threats they posed and the team as a collective unit had planned accordingly to shut them down.

    "I know they're strike players. They are players you need to watch out for," Frizell said.

    "Them two guys aren't going to win it on their own.

    "Queensland have been so dominant for so long because they work well together. We need to be on song as a team.

    "I can't shut them down on my own. It needs to be a collective effort from the whole team.

    "Queensland is probably banking on those two guys to come up with big plays but we'll bank on our whole team to do a job."

For just the second time in 14 years, NSW are heading into an Origin series as the defending champs.

The Blues didn't handle that pressure in 2015, losing the series 2-1.

But this time they won't be looking over at Cameron Smith, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston or Cooper Cronk.

Those Origin luminaries have passed the baton to a new generation of Queensland stars, who will be hellbent on avoiding back to back series losses.

The Maroons are on home soil for game one before the series shifts to Perth for game two and then on to Sydney for what could be a deciding third game.

Both sides confirmed they will run out 1-17 as initially named, with Queensland debutants Moses Mbye, Joe Ofahengaue and David Fifita to come off the bench while Cody Walker, Nick Cotric, Cameron Murray, Jack Wighton and Payne Haas will make their Origin debuts for NSW.

Key match-up
The Hunt v Cook clash will be crucial, as will Cherry-Evans v Cleary, Chambers v Mitchell and Ponga v Tedesco. But this game could easily come down to a single match-winning play from one individual and there's a good chance it will come from the opposing No.6s. The Maroons will turn to Cameron Munster for that little piece of magic, while NSW will bank on Origin rookie Cody Walker to answer the bell in crunch time as he has done all year for the Rabbitohs.

For the Maroons to win
They haven't been allowed to utter a word about the Blues to the media as Kevin Walters attempts to work his side into an us-against-the-world type frenzy, but the Maroons have to ensure they don't lose sight of the old adage 'work smarter, not harder'. The forwards have to contain their Blues counterparts, while the likes of DCE, Ponga, Munster and Morgan need to prove that Queensland remain in safe hands after losing so many stars to retirement in the past two years.

For the Blues to win
It'll be up to the senior players to keep five Origin debutants calm and focused without disregarding their own responsibilities. Walker has a lot on his plate in his first Origin appearance, as do the three rookies on the bench. Mitchell has to rise to the occasion like he did last year, while Tedesco and Cook loom as major threats to the Maroons. Last but not least, Nathan Cleary has to justify the selectors' faith to stick with him.

Queensland have won five of the past six games at Suncorp Stadium, though the Blues have won game one in Brisbane at their last two attempts (2014 and 2017). The Maroons have lost the penalty count only once in the past eight games at Suncorp. New South Wales have won the past two series-opening games, while the Maroons have lost only one series after winning Game 1 in Brisbane (2005).

And another thing ...
The Wally Lewis Medal has been awarded to the best player in the series since 2004. Prior to that, the medal was exclusively awarded to Queensland's player of the series. Craig Fitzgibbon was the first recipient from either team in '04, while Cameron Smith was a four-time winner before his retirement from Origin in 2017. The only other multiple winner is Billy Slater, who received the medal last year and in 2010.

Well that was certainly a big mistake ! He must had told Fittler how to use his interchange bench as with Klemmer off in the 58 th minute the Blues lost a lot of their go- forward . Perhaps in future he should visit the Dragons opposition coaches at half time also , at least the we would stand a better chance of winning .

Losing Cook was a big mistake however, we never learn from our mistakes. Now we let another potential champion go in Robson. The dumb officials at SGI simply do not learn from such mistakes; they have their minds on other things.

Yeh cause he has to but you are right he stung and put his shoulder into defence last night. But as a hooker apart from the 40 / 20 he does not do much in attack just pass the ball, when he does run the defense sits back and waits as he throws dummy after dummy especially left side.
He still is a better halfback for us and playing right side.

I dont think Hooker is our problem, McInness is a proven top flight hooker and although Cook shades McInness in some areas McInness out does Cook in others. Cook is on $900K per season which I believe is considerably more than McInness.

Cook averages 87 run metres, 43 tackles 3 missed tackles
McInness averages 55 run metres, 50 tackles, 1 missed tackle

I would love to keep Robson but the team needs to be balanced under the cap and there are a number of other areas where the money would be better spent at this stage.

Has Robson been announed going?..
Another potential champion. You sound like Joey Johns. How many times have we heard this? Cam King was meant to be another one.
I am not convinced about Robson. Time will tell who is right!

Firstly, Hunt is not a full time hooker. Great for a few games but even last night his dummy half passing was SaintMaR like. He'd be better utilised at hooker in a 10 or 15 min spell to give McInnes a break he really needs in a game. Robson won't hang around for that amount of game time and nor he shouldn't.
Under a decent coach the McInnes/Hunt combo would be an absolute weapon imo.

Sums it up pretty well. Hooker is far from our problem. While Cook is the best hooker in the game these days, if he was injured it's very likely that McInnes would be next in line for NSW.

Queue the "Mc Innes is no better than Rein", "Nathan Peats would be picked first", "Isn't Api Koroisau available", "Robson is even better than Cook", "McInnes is a lock" posts...

McInnes is a great tackling machine but will never represent NSW mainly because of his inability to read a game. On many occasions he has sent the ball the wrong way, pass the ball to the wrong player and given away penalties at the wrong time of a set/game.

Robson could have been our 'Cook' and I'm sure we will in the future again regret letting go such a good prospect.
