i would like to see them only go to the video if the on-field ref thinks its a try. if they think its no try then play on.

Doesn't stop the broadcasters from replaying the try's, you think whinging is bad now, people wouldn't cop it.

Why not, if a captain doesn't challenge then its his responsibility that the decision wasn't reversed. This takes the flack away from the ref and places it onto the captain, a much better system.

It doesn't matter what the ref says or who calls for the video, the ref and video ref will still make mistakes, there will still be contentious calls, people will still whinge and commentators and fans will still claim there is a better system.

I would like to see the refs make all the decisions, with each team having one or two "captains call" per half.

Same, would be perfect IMO

Going to the video for the jack reed no try was insane. As another poster said he was 3m over the deadball line and bounced it a foot above the ground. Thee wasn't even a warriors player in the frame and they still had 3 looks at it!

Watching the Queensland Cup I'm always impressed with how the referees handle things- players aren't whinging to them every five seconds, and the overwhelming majority of the decisions they make are correct. They use the video referee sparingly and only when play should be scrutinised to make sure they get it right. Perhaps the NSW Cup is similar, but it's not broadcast up here so I can't really comment on that.

How they go from that to the atrocious standard of NRL refereeing is absolutely beyond me. I can only assume they're selecting the referees with the worst track record of making correct decisions and then training them to be even more horrendous at their job.

The Broncos/Warriors game was basically a study in this- the Broncos were the better, more polished team throughout but the Warriors exploited their luck and probably deserved the win in the end by playing harder when it counted. The outcome was decided by exceptionally poor refereeing, especially from the video referees, rather than what happened on the field.

Would the game lose much if the Video Ref was ditched?

Watching games this weekend, you've got to assume there is a quota to go to the VR for sponsorship reasons. So much momentum is lost, especially when it takes over 2 minutes and they're still watching replays of the same angle.

The refs need to rely on their judgment and other on field officials, just like it happens in the lower grades and junior/club footy.

This is a Super League innovation and it needs to go the way of Super League

Should this be replaced? By a captians call or no Video Ref at all?

They need him for obvious no-tries, however, I'm against having a second, useless "pocket" ref. Bringing back the in-goal official is a way to reduce the amount of usage of the video ref IMO.

given the video ref is such a hit & miss affair, i propose we replace him with the 'vidot ref'..

when the ref can't make up his mind on the field, the decision goes over to vidot ref...

the cameras cross to daniel vidot, standing in a room..

someone throws him the ball.

he catches it, try.

he drops it, no try.

has to be more effective than the current situation.

No one likes saying anything positive about refs but I think the changes Daniel Anderson and co made were excellent. The ref saying he thinks it is try or no-try before going upstairs takes the shitty benefit of the doubt ruling out of the equation and allows us just to get on with it when there is no good vision or too much grey area.

There are still howlers because people are idiots but my gut feel is that there are fewer these days. They just watch too many replays sometimes. I guess that will happen with so much pressure on decision makers. Maybe they could cap the number of replays at something reasonable in the interest of keeping the game moving

Lots of 0-0 draws coming our way under your system.
