Stats are always a good place to start when trying to identify the root issue.
We had 40% possession; completed 19 sets of 32 attempted and contributed 14 errors.
If we cut down the errors then completions increase allowing more opportunities to regain possession (by creating pressure or scoring points then receiving the ball back). More possession equates to less defending, better field position and so on and so on.
So by this theory, the number of errors was the dominate problem. Look at what event happened to the lead up of each error and penalty conceded and who was involved. Establish if there is a pattern and then you will start to see the root issue behind the loss. Will that?s what I would do ? Cappy.

Well that's simple, errors are happening when returning the ball, pushing passes in the main and the occasional dropped bomb!
Which may explain why no one following Matulino as being told to keep it simple.

I never said it was a strong effort from him against Souths. My point is our defense is what is holding us back from being contenders, not SJ, so I personally don't focus on him (or any individual player) when looking at why we're struggling for yet another season.

Our attack is good enough to be winning the lions share of games we play. It certainly would be for a number of other sides. But conceding at least 20 in most matches and making too many errors means, not only are we in grave danger of losing these games, our attack isn't at its best, because our attacking players are using up energy defending.

I don't know the answer to your question at the end, but its equally relevant to ask how many second half points have we conceded? How many second half errors have we made? How many second half tackles, missed tackles, repeat sets etc etc. etc. Defense affects attack.

Dont waste your breath trying to explain whats really happening on the field, most of them wont be happy until theres some south Auckland dimwit in the 7 jersey who has quarter of the talent SJ has.

60% of the errors were caused by pressure from the opposition. In some of those situations, Souths looked to be ahead or close to the offside line. But evaluating further, they were defensively reading the service from our dummy half, knowing that he does not have a strong pass off his left hand or cannot pass directly from the ground without standing. They applied pressure from the outside, cut down the space and help manufacture errors.
So the root issue is poor coaching or poor selection?
