GI: We Love Playing on Good Friday

Words & Video: Tom Skolarikis & Guy Bevan

A A

Rabbitohs skipper, Greg Inglis, says that he and his Rabbitohs love playing in the annual Good Friday clash against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.

The sight of the Rabbitohs faithful out in force for the traditional clash is something that Inglis can’t easily forget having played in the match a number of times – the Test fullback now looking forward to similar scenes again this week.

“We love going out there on Good Friday and playing in front of our home fans – what better way (to spend Good Friday) with a four o’clock kick-off on a Friday afternoon,” said Inglis.

“The Easter Show’s right next door and (we’re) playing at home against the Dogs – it’s going to be a good clash.

“Just two teams going out there competing for the two points. It’s going to be a great challenge for us.

The Good Friday clash between the two clubs has gained a solid reputation as one of the game’s showpiece events, with crowds in excess of 40,000 regularly turning out to cheer on their team.

Inglis’ thoughts were mirrored by Rabbitohs five-eighth, Luke Keary earlier in the week, with the pivot admitting that the game is one of his highlights of the NRL season.

“It’s probably one of my favourite games of the year,” said Keary.

“It was a cracker last year – we’ve had big crowds and we’re expecting another big one this Friday.”

All tickets to the Good Friday match include entry and return travel on Sydney Trains and Olympic Park Major Event Buses, so leave the car at home and take advantage of the additional and direct public transport services in place. All fans who have not pre-booked parking should not drive.

PREVIEW: Good Friday v Bulldogs, 2016

Suttons South Sydney Present
Rabbitohs v Bulldogs
Friday 25 March 2016
4:00pm - NRL Kick Off

The Good Friday rivalry between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs is about to be upon us for yet another season, and with both teams having started 2016 in promising fashion, Round 4 is set for another classic traditional encounter.

The clash between the two clubs has gained a solid reputation as one of the game’s showpiece events, with crowds in excess of 40,000 regularly turning out to cheer on their teams.

The atmosphere has unsurprisingly made it as much a fan-favourite as a player favourite.

“It’s probably one of my favourite games of the year,” said Rabbitohs five-eighth, Luke Keary.

“It was a cracker last year – we’ve had big crowds and we’re expecting another big one this Friday.”

After experiencing the ferocity of the last Good Friday clash, Keary knows exactly what to expect from the Bulldogs, who will be looking to bounce back from their Round 3 loss at the hands of the Parramatta Eels and regather some momentum.

“I’m expecting them to be just as physical on Friday,” said Keary.

Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, named his strongest available side on Tuesday, with energetic forward, Nathan Brown set to deputise for Sam Burgess who will be rested for the clash after his injury against the Dragons.

After coming up short in Round 3 by two points against the Saints, Maguire is aware that improvements will be made by the side when they take the field against the ‘Dogs.

“There are areas from our game last week that we’re looking forward to improving,” said Maguire.

“The standards we set are very high and we need to make sure we are meeting those,

“When you meet those, you get to build pressure within what you are doing.”

Maguire is adamant that the preparation leading into this week’s game will play a significant role in determining the way in which the game is played as well as the result.

“Moving forward, it’s all about today’s training building into Friday’s game,” said Maguire.

“It’s really a preparation to make sure that we’re working hard for each other and enjoying playing with each other.”

All tickets to the Good Friday match include entry and return travel on Sydney Trains and Olympic Park Major Event Buses, so leave the car at home and take advantage of the additional and direct public transport services in place. All fans who have not pre-booked parking should not drive.

The Rabbitohs will take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the annual Good Friday blockbuster at ANZ Stadium this Friday at 4pm. Click here to purchase your tickets.

Spotlight – Paul Carter

Rabbitohs back-rower, Paul Carter, was cleared to play in the Good Friday match on Wednesday after successfully having a judiciary charge downgraded by the Match Review Committee – and it’s just as well. Carter has been in solid form since the beginning of the season plying his trade in the Club’s second-row. Last week against the Dragons, Carter came within a whisker of scoring what could have been the winning try, but also produced a herculean defensive effort with a whopping 61 tackles to his name.

NYC

Rabbitohs v Bulldogs
Friday 25 March 2016
1:45pm - NYC Kick Off

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC (under 20s) side will go in search of their second win of the 2016 season when they come up against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the curtain-raiser to the Good Friday Showdown.

The Bulldogs come into the match having gone down to Parramatta by 30-20 last week, while David Penna’s Rabbitohs will be looking to bounce back from a last-minute two-point loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG.

With the lead changing on a number of occasions at drenched Cricket Ground, the Rabbitohs looked to be in the box seat for the win in the dying stages of last week’s match. But the bounce of the ball would ultimately go in favour of the Red V.

Look to the halves combination of Liam Coleman and Chad O’Donnell this week to guide the men in Red and Green around the park. Both players have produced a number of pin-point kicks that have either served to improve Souths’ tactical on-field position, or have produced points outright.

Sam Burgess' absence puts South Sydney Rabbitohs almost a full-sized field behind
Date
March 24, 2016 - 2:08PM

Burgess feared the worse as he lay motionless on the field after diving into the Dragons' defence in the two-point loss to St George Illawarra on Sunday. Scans showed no damage to Burgess' vertebrae or spinal cord, after which Burgess tweeted he felt "extremely lucky".

Nathan Brown will wear the No.13 jersey in Burgess' absence. Back-rower Chris Grevsmuhl has been given an NRL reprieve to replace Brown on the bench.

Burgess has averaged 167 metres a game for the Rabbitohs this season, which is 95 metres more than any of the forwards who played lock for the Rabbitohs last season. South Sydney struggled to replace Burgess, using six locks including Chris McQueen, Kyle Turner, Ben Lowe and Jason Clark.

Aside from his mammoth running metres, Burgess has touched the ball 21.3 times a game compared with 11.2 last season by the Rabbitohs' No.13.

While Burgess may have started the first game at prop, he has settled back into the lock role. His numbers have also been hindered by his injury last week when he was restricted to just 52 minutes.

Other areas where Burgess has dominated this season include:

Averaging 17 hit-ups a game compared with 9.2 last season by the Rabbitohs' No.13;
Four offloads each game, compared with 0.3;
4.7 passes compared with 1.5.
Burgess is expected to recover in time for the Rabbitohs' round-five game against Manly. The Rabbitohs were given a boost when back-rower Paul Carter was cleared by the NRL judiciary to play against the Bulldogs.

While Burgess has indicated he may want to play, Bulldogs coach Des Hasler said it would be unlikely the Englishman took his place on Friday.

"You never know, [Burgess] is obviously dedicated enough but I think duty of care will take precedence," Hasler said. "I don't think he'll take the field. But I think young Carter getting off, that helps them quite a bit, he's been playing some good footy.

"They've been playing really up the middle and grafting and grinding away and we don't expect that to change too much whether Sam's there or not."

I'm guessing 6-8 weeks. Could be more could be less.

Could be 3 weeks, could be 3 months.

It's obvious that the Mole has been reading Dr Rabbits20 on this site. The whinging panic merchant Dr wrote the rubbish above a couple of days ago.

What I really want is for GI to get more involved with the ball in hand inside our attacking 20. Boyd, Slater, Dugan, Stewart and most of the good fullbacks get their hands on the ball heaps in those situations but GI hardly gets involves these days. Barely touched the ball in the Dragons half last week. He's a Churchill winning 5/8, surely he should get the ball in good position once a set in attack.

If you read Rabbits20 he has inside info that Canterbury players will go out tonight and deliberately target and twist Inglis' suspect knee.
