McInnes on Returning to the SCG

For Rabbitohs young-gun Cameron McInnes, this week’s return to the Sydney Cricket Ground is a homecoming of sorts, with the hooker making his first grade debut at the venue last season.
McInnes came on as a replacement in Round 5 of the 2014 season against the Dragons, in what was a historic night for the Rabbitohs with John Sutton breaking the Club’s all-time appearance record.
“It was a great experience to make my debut there last year,” said McInnes.
“It’s a really special place for me so I’m looking forward to going back there this week definitely.”
McInnes has spent the last few weeks plying his trade for the North Sydney Bears and has been taking the opportunity to learn from current Rabbitohs rake, Issac Luke.
“At the moment I’ve been in reserve grade the last few weeks, but it’s just learning off Issac while he’s still here and trying to improve week to week so I can become a regular first-grader,” said McInnes.
“I’m in a good position having him (Issac) here because I can learn off him every week.”
The Rabbitohs will take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG next Saturday night at 7:30pm. Click here to purchase your tickets.

lol, don't try play that game. It should be a comfortable win to Souths.

If they lose, DKOR should kill himself.

You're playing games too mate!

You get Benji, Dugan, Frizell, Thompson and possibly De Belin back.

St George haven't had a team as strong as this named in the last 3 weeks.

St George will be very desperate and Souths have to be too.

Desperation can bring out the best in a team and St George are dangerous.

I agree but I doubt it will happen unless Lowe gets injured.

I don't think McInnes will play the full 80, expect Keary to move to hooker and Sutto to 5/8 for about 25mins.

Traditional Rivalry One for the Fans – Burgess

The opportunity to play a traditional rival at the Sydney Cricket Ground is a privilege that isn’t lost on Rabbitohs prop-forward, George Burgess, as his side prepares to take on St George Illawarra this Saturday night in the Men of League Heritage Round.
The Rabbitohs have a long history of playing at the famous ground, having played at the venue a total of 321 times, recording 185 wins, seven draws and 129 losses for a winning percentage of 58.72% - a host of Grand Finals among the matches.

The most recent match came in Round 22 of the 2014 season when the red and greens defeated the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in front of a crowd of a crowd of over 27,000.
“It’s just a great opportunity to come out and play at such a historic ground where legends of the past have played,” said Burgess.
“There have been some record crowds here in the past so hopefully everyone can turn out on Saturday and make it another memorable game.”
This Saturday’s clash celebrates 50 years since the historic 1965 Grand Final between St George and the Rabbitohs – a match won by an incredible Saints side that would go on to win a record 11 straight Premierships.
Throw in a record SCG crowd of over 78,000, along with never to be repeated scenes of fans scaling grandstand rooves just to see the match, and the 1965 decider – while a loss for the Rabbitoh – has gone down in the game’s folklore.
For Burgess, the chance to play the Dragons 50 years on from that day at the same venue is a wonderful opportunity.
“They’re also a club that’s steeped in history,” said Burgess.
“They’ve obviously had a lot of legends at their club as well – it’ll be a great matchup and definitely one for the fans.
“They’ll be fired up – they’ll be wanting to get the two points as will we.”
The Rabbitohs will take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG next Saturday night at 7:30pm. Click here to purchase your tickets.

Cleary Recalls the 1965 Grand Final

Rugby League has produced plenty of stories that are now part of the game’s folklore and Rabbitohs 1965 Grand Final winger Michael Cleary has plenty of his own.
The former sprint champion, Wallaby, Kangaroo, politician, model, wrestling commentator and Rabbitohs Premiership winning winger vividly recalls 1965 and the Rabbitohs’ stoush with a St George club on their way to a record 11 straight Premierships.
From knocking himself out, to being on the end of a Kevin Ryan beauty and celebrating a memorable season all the way through to the small hours of the morning at a local pub, 1965 may not have been the year of the Rabbitoh, but it would lay the platform for the future success of that young Souths outfit.
“We had no fear for them (St George) because we’d beaten them in the pre-season, we’d beaten them in two games during the comp and we were favourites to win the Grand Final,” says Cleary.

“We were overawed from the excitement – we’d never seen anything like that. But they kept their pattern and kept what they had to do (and) controlled the game.”
After going down by a respectable 12-8, the Rabbitohs speedster recalls the aftermath.
“We all went to the Cauliflower Hotel,” recalls Cleary.
“We stayed there Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and we had 2SM that was playing all music for us – the poor old publican came down on Monday morning at six o’clock and said; ‘you’ll get me arrested! You’ve got all these cheerio calls coming over the air!’.”
“We went and got Bernie Purcell out of bed actually on the Saturday night – we went and got him at about three o’clock in the morning and dragged him over to the Cauliflower. He was still in his pyjamas.”
“We had no fear for them because we’d beaten them in the pre-season, we’d beaten them in two games during the comp and we were favourites to win the Grand Final,” says Cleary.
