Manly should have been made to represent the Northern Beaches and Central Coast, similar to how Dragons have a foot in Southern Sydney and Wollongong. In the long-term it would have made Manly far stronger. They still could do it as The Sea Eagles since the precedent has been set with The Dolphins representing Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast.

Gold Coast will never appeal to people from the Brisbane metropolitan area, but their proximity to Brisbane is used as an excuse to not put an NRL team in southern Brisbane. I honestly think the Gold Coast Titans have harmed Brisbane 2 more than the Broncos ever did and forced the ARLC into choosing Redcliffe over a 2nd Brisbane team that could have rivalled the Broncos. We'll now have two weak teams north and south of Brisbane instead of two powerhouses in Brisbane.
News ltd forced the NRL to accept an outer fringe northern suburb club, not the GC Titans!
Be interesting to see if SC does take to THE Dolphins, its not been a good start with the Falcons telling them to get stuffed.

This was why (back in 2005) I preferred the Central Coast Bears bid over the Gold Coast bid. There's good reason no sporting organisation has lasted on the GC without the governing body in question pumping large sums of money into them. But people were so distracted by "OMG another Qld team!" rather than the merit of the actual bid in terms of its' location or viability.
A Gold Coast nrl club can be sustainable

They had the failure of the centre of excellence then soon after the afl brought in a team and funded them to the max

the afl has literally done everything they can to make the suns work and they are still a basket case

it’s got great juniors and a great catchment area the titans can one day be a success again

I don’t think the suns will ever work but the afl won’t admit defeat and cut their losses and move them to Tasmania

they will just keep throwing more and more money at them every year

Not just news ltd the broncos themselves

indeed the only reason the titans came in is the nrl weren’t allowed to add another team in Brisbane until 2015

Sunshine Coast haven’t told them to get stuffed they only extended their deal with the storm for another year

dolphins will be fine all this doom mongering is ridiculous

long term I think they should only play the other qld team at Suncorp and move all their games back to Redcliffe and Sunshine Coast

the qld govt would build them a new stadium if they really pushed for one

It was a 3 year extension from '21, so till the end of '24. They also fund an academy there and have a netball team. It would make sense though if Dolphins are serious about the area for Storm to go all in with Tigers and Falcons join Dolphins. Though there might be historic rivalry there with Redcliffe that might be a barrier?

They do a good job recruiting from NZ. If NZ2doesnt happen maybe they should look to some formal partnerships in Wellington and Christchurch.
PNG is ours :)

You’ll get north Sydney plus Perth which is more than enough
WA, PNG and Brisbane Tigers. That would do us nicely!
Bears can stay as Roosters bitches and watch as the Cocks slowly take over the lower north shore. Which should have happened 20 years ago.

Its not just rationalisation, its every club... we've been watching the cowboys, warriors and titans, for the past 16-28 years and hoped to see more out of these areas since their inception, trouble is they get on a roll, make finals, then plumment the following season
Titans came 8th last year, they shouldn't be last now... Cowboys complete 180° ... i know everything is cyclical and rosters turn over, but it shits me that we have expanded since NRL began and only have Melbourne to show for it,
I hope Redcliffe go well, coz if thet don't you can forget about PNG, Perth or wherever, it'll be North Sydney Bears for 12 games a year at NSO

Whilst I agree with your conclusion I would temper it with context of SL and the split because essentially a lot of expansion failed because of that

I wouldn’t judge the future on such an extenuating circumstance as a code war; however, I do agree that the Warriors and Titans (especially) haven’t worked out as planned. There is still time for them though.

Whatever your viewpoints on the war itself, it is a shame that we now don’t have an Adelaide or Perth side and we haven’t had a second Brisbane side for nigh on 30 years. Imagine how the game could have looked with sides in those areas and the extra support we might well have had. Anyway, the game will hopefully get there again

No point judging the '95 expansion, it was unique times and massively influenced the outcomes of the expansion clubs. All we should judge is post SL expansion which is Storm, Titans and soon to be Dolphins.
Storm successful
Titans largely a failure to date (though as said their crowds are not the worst and they rate ok on TV)
Dolphins unknown

It’ll be really slow roosters can’t even take over much of the eastern suburbs

at a 100m a year it should take them about their current life again lol. Would be sped up of course if the NSWRL and NRL grew a pair and dictated terms.

Gold Coast Titans were very vocal in opposing a second Brisbane team. They masterminded a bullshit investigation to conclude a new team in Brisbane would hurt the Titans. There was no chance of the NRL putting a team between Broncos and Titans after the whinging from the Gold Coast.

The Rabbitohs' return was an abysmal failure until a Western Australian called Peter Holmes-a-Court and Russell Crowe bailed them out of financial ruin and gave them the clout to lure quality players to the club. South Sydney were cellar dwellers and getting flogged silly until Holmes-a-Court and Crowe got involved. Attendances have been hot and cold and influenced by onfield results. At times they drop to 10k, which is worse than the Titans. The most recent season they drew just 10k was 2017.

The storm weren’t successful because of anything the arlc did

it was news ltd taking the 10 million dividend they got from the nrl each year as half owners investing back into the storm and luck getting a coach like Bellamy

titans failure is unique to them (coe and suns)

at least in 95 the arl added only one regional tram and 3 capital city teams

it’s almost 30 years later and we are still debating putting teams that we had back then
