The storm weren’t successful because of anything the arlc did

it was news ltd taking the 10 million dividend they got from the nrl each year as half owners investing back into the storm and luck getting a coach like Bellamy

titans failure is unique to them (coe and suns)

at least in 95 the arl added only one regional tram and 3 capital city teams

it’s almost 30 years later and we are still debating putting teams that we had back then
Arthurson and Quayle f**ked up expansion in 1995. They'll go down as the most corrupt simpletons to run a sports league. Only a moron would admit four teams under the stipulation that they cover the travel and accommodation costs in first grade and reserve grade for every side they played at home. At the very least they should have made the other 16 teams fund their own travel and accommodation.

The game's broadcasting deal with Packer brought in just $10 million per year. It didn't have the money to invest in new teams.

Ribot will always hold that tag

No one else was as gullable as him to destroy RL a few years after winning a licence because someone wanted RL on a ruval TV network when didn't have the TV rights
How did Ribot destroy rugby league?

You cannot blame Ribot for trying to bring the game into the late 20th century in 1995.

The NSWRL model of generating revenue was an archaic remnant from a bygone era. Its clubs relied on gambling revenue from their Leagues Clubs' gaming machines to fund their teams. The model provided more than enough money to kill the BRL's seven clubs because gaming machines were prohibited in all licenced venues across Queensland, but it was never going to generate the finance needed to compete with a Brisbane-based team that garnered corporate support from all over the city.

Arthurson and Quayle were too stupid to realise that the moment they gave the Broncos a spot in the NSWRL they condemned the eleven remaining Sydney-based clubs to a slow and painful death. Capitalism only allows a select few large entities to flourish in any given market. Instead of accepting that the eleven remaining Sydney clubs would need to be rationalised down to a number that could generate enough corporate support from Sydney to compete with the Broncos, Arthurson and Quayle made an appeal to emotion and played the victim card about tradition and history. Neither of them cared about the history and tradition of the BRL as they ran it into the ground during the 60s, 70s and 80s. They were happy to use capitalism to kill the BRL when the market favoured Sydney, but when the tide turned and favoured the Broncos and Raiders they tried to force a socialist system on everyone to keep Sydney's small archaic clubs alive. They even used their position to force all four expansion clubs to cover travel and accommodation costs for all existing teams across ARL and reserve grade.

If that ain't corrupt and biased then what is?

It's also the reason three of the expansion clubs joined the Broncos, Raiders, Bulldogs, Panthers and Sharks in a rebel competition that provided financial support to everyone based on their worth. No one understands capitalism better than News Ltd, and they realised only some Sydney clubs could be an asset like the Broncos. The only reason the Crushers didn't join was because they were unwanted by News Ltd.

If News Ltd didn't capitalise on the poor business acumen and bias of Arthurson and Quayle then some one else would have jumped in and provided an option to the interstate clubs not favoured by the NSWRL. It was an inevitable part of the game embracing professionalism.

They make three million a season just from memberships

they really put the Queensland clubs to shame don’t they ?
You're deflecting away from the question.

I'll ask again.

How many of them are ticketed members?

If there's 10k ticketed members paying an average of $300 per membership then that generates $3 million for the club. If you have 25k members purchasing ticketed memberships at $300 each then the revenue would be $7.5m.

It shows about two-thirds of the memberships are non-ticketed.

For the record, Cowboys made $3,029,838 from memberships in 2021 and total revenue was $65,060,121.

Broncos have 22,253 ticketed members.

Yeh but that’s counting both members heads twice

south’s aren’t called the pride of the league for nothing. Maybe one day brisbane will catch up to their membership numbers

Why are you quoting LC financials? You of all people

All Sydney clubs have similar non FC revenues

Key metric is FC revenues v FC profit

Leagues club in Sydney = bad
Leagues club in qld = good

igaine if you included leagues club financials for Sydney clubs

dogs turnover 130 million
Parra similar
Penrith ? 300 million

cowboys 34 million

Cowboys Rugby League Football Limited is a subsidiary of Cowboys Leagues Club Ltd. It's a community owned club.
Your quoting LC memberships
Cowboys Leagues Club Ltd is the Parent and their revenue from LC memberships was 211,129. The Football Department's membership revenue is included under "Consolidated".

Sharks Leagues also display their football department revenue under their annual report. The latest I could find for Cronulla was 2020 and it made for grim reading. Compare sponsorship revenue for Cowboys vs Sharks in 2020.

Cowboys $6.45m vs Sharks $2.77m.

The largest source of income for Cronulla is the NRL grant. They're not making much from the property deals ($2.4m).

What has any of this got to do with the WA Bears??????
Why would Perth want to saddle up with a NSWRL club that's stuck in NSW Cup when a NSWRL club that's been in the NRL since 1998 cannot compete with a regional club from FNQ?

The population of FNQ isn't that big, yet sponsors would rather saddle up with the Cowboys than throw bags of dough at a Sydney side. The brand recognition of the Sydney clubs are of little value if companies aren't willing to spend much money to be associated with them.

Cowboys were down the bottom of the ladder in 2020 and had been since the 2017 GF while Cronulla were regularly in the finals, yet sponsors still chose Cowboys over Sharks.

Forget the Bears. They're worthless. Pirates will be one of the biggest clubs in the NRL within 10 years of joining the league. A red and black Pirates just to rub it in to the hicks who sit under the tree at NSO.

Playing devils advocate these are the potential benefits. Agree with them or not.
Recognised established Brand
Access to Sydney corporates
Increased membership
Access to established pathways system to compliment the developing WA one
Funding from a pokie den
bonus crowd attendance for Sydney clubs
Vlandys decision making

Those would be the benefits. If they outweigh the risks is up to the Perth consortiums keen to bid to decide and a lot of that is what the Bears are asking for in the partnership.

Ideally we will have enough financial backers and pathway partnership opportunities to go it alone with the Pirates or Reds bids, but if it has to be WC Bears, as long as its on the right terms, then so be it.

Whatever benefits come from North Sydney will be small and outweighed by the negative impact it has on the club's appeal to Western Australians. I cannot see Western Australians getting behind a low brow Sydney club.

like I said depends on the terms.
change of brand, WA ownership and min 11 games in perth and I think WA fans will go with it. Anything less and I dont think they will and it should never happen.

Preach!!

The NSWRL big-wigs had been talking tepidly about rationalisation and a truly national top tier for years, but paralyzed by indecisiveness and fear of the Sydney clubs going into open revolt.

It took an outside organization - in this case News Ltd - to actually DO SOMETHING, because of that indecision & paralysis inside the establishment.

Yes Perth & Auckland were good moves, but the execution was horrible (4 teams at once? Host pays travel/accom? And no clear plan for Melbourne and Adelaide???)

TV rights were part of the issue, sure.. but they capitalized on a lot of frustration from all parts outside NSW as well.
