Last time the Western Reds were in the competition the airfares nearly sent them broke, maybe the games in NSW could offset that ?. I wonder what plans they have to offset that problem this time ?.
I remember hearing somewhere that the Reds paid for opposition teams to fly over, is this true ?.
I explained to you earlier that Cowboys and Reds had to cover the flight and accommodation costs for visiting teams who travelled to Townsville in both the ARL A Grade and Reserve Grade competitions. The Sydney clubs were either too broke to afford a flight to Townsville and Perth or they ripped off the new clubs because that's what cockroaches do.
The broadcast deal provides enough money to cover flight and accommodation for all clubs. Today we get about $400 million a year from Ch9 and Foxtel. Back in 1995 our game received just $10 million in broadcast rights from Packer.
