I just find it weird they would kill off Perth and then go and move their players (plus Hunter mariners) to the storm and then keep a dud club like Cronulla in the nrl

What if they’d chosen to back Perth instead of Melbourne. Thatone hundred million they pumped into the storm would’ve turned things around

They must’ve known stuff about Perth they didn’t make public
it was a negotiation with ARL, agreements were reached about who would stay and go, picks were made by each side. Melbourne was a secondary consideration after ARL wanted Perth out in place of suburban sydney clubs. News ltd happy to acquiesce as was easy as they owned them, were expensive and had an eye on Australia's second biggest city. Such is rugba league.

Spending millions to prop up a team. Probably realised that they could do same in Melbourne for better return.

Still flaming?
In their final year disinterest in Perth was so low they outdrew Wests, Souths, Illawarra, St George, Hunter, south Queensland and Penrith.

That number says nothing about financial situation. A Sydney club may only need to draw a smaller crowd to break even. Saying News killed a club that was a money pit is a big call. How long should have they propped it up?!

The ranking criteria was a bust

Cronulla have been broke until a few years ago losing millions pa

Think they included news Ltd grants as part of their revenue whilst for arl clubs they got assessed without these grants

Other than going to super league Cronulla offered nothing to the nrl

Not over clubs like Gold Coast crushers Perth Souths or central coast bears

Storm were losing many millions pa for decades till they became profitable recently

We’ve ended up with a solid club in Melb now that’s a good thing

Crushers were broke. Gold coast owners also pulled out. Weak Sydney clubs merged.

Everyone was broke then

Manly were broke look at them now

Bad decisions were made that set back rugby league 30 years

At least it they were going to kill club kill off the right ones and keep the important ones

No Brisbane 2 no Gold Coast no central coast were huge mistakes

Those broke older clubs had clubs, supporters & backers. A league full of plastic teams like reds, rams, crushers would've been a disaster after superleague war which ran off traditional fans. Those teams would need money & if news didn't want to pay NRL could have folded.

News Ltd realised how plastic the nrl was without souths (bears) and balmain / wests merged and dragons

Why when they won the appeal against Souths they still kept them in

Souths gf win was I think the most watched game in rugby league history (or close too)

Scorchers, Wildcats, Eagles, Dockers all above avg attendnace.
Force avg attendance for their comp.
Glory slightly under after years of sht'ness.

Punching above our weight as usual.

Shame the nrl isn’t adding an afl side to the comp huh ?

Force and glory would both average 5k each

So no Perth people don’t love all live sport
