Newcastle kicking goals back in them days! No surprise the bottom 6 clubs were all Sydney suburban clubs.Bears had the option to go to SL and if every SL club's News Ltd grant counted towards the shoddy rationalisation criteria then you can argue that they should've made the jump. Neil Whittaker advised them that moving to the CC would guarantee them a spot by being counted as a regional club along with the Knights, Broncos and Warriors.
The criteria if anyone wants to brush up on their history-
Where does Perth rank on that table ???Newcastle kicking goals back in them days! No surprise the bottom 6 clubs were all Sydney suburban clubs.

Well considering they had bigger crowds than 1/2 dozen on it we will never know lolWhere does Perth rank on that table ???
For some reason it’s been omitted
Piggins book talks about this in good detail5 of the 6 were ARL clubs who didn't get that sweet News Ltd cash.
Newcastle were safe regardless but also had the benefit of the 1997 bandwagon with no team closer than 2 hours away.
Out of the bottom 6 at that time, Norths and Manly being that low are proof enough that the criteria had holes in it.
Bunny Bear O, RiellyI remember them playing for Norths now lol. Ian Maurice was mascot the bear
Arko almost had a heart attack for Manly, lol, it is no coincidence that since Arko and Fulton stepped away from their high ranking positions on the ARL that Manly have plummeted down the influential club ladder.I meant by starting super league and excluding the bears
After packer backstabbed the arl they were forced into an awful peace deal that hurt their clubs way more
Souths norths Balmain wests St George manly (gone or merged)
The only arl clubs from Sydney which survived were chooks and eels
And the bears were promised a spot at central coast they should have been guaranteed a spot
Be bitter with Arko for the northern eagles but the guy almost had a heart attack for rugby league
News Ltd would’ve got 100 percent if not for him and Quayle
Pvl = Arko + Quayle
I wish the arl had the money to keep going then eventually just adding its own clubs to super league places like nz Canberra Brisbane and Perth and left all of super league to rot
They’ve done very well since max delmege took overArko almost had a heart attack for Manly, lol, it is no coincidence that since Arko and Fulton stepped away from their high ranking positions on the ARL that Manly have plummeted down the influential club ladder.
The Eagles showed their true colours with Delmege, the guy saved them at the 11th hour going into the merger with the Bears $$$ wise, he propped Manly up many times saving their bacon. They’ve done very well since max delmege took over
Broncos haven’t won a comp in almost 20 years whilst manly have won 2?
Arkos a legend of the game
He was offered a job to run the super league comp at 500k pa and he said no
Plus the demise of the nth eagles mean the bears return cleanly
That jv was putrid
If Arko was so strong why didn’t manly get a stand alone team like the chooksThe Eagles showed their true colours with Delmege, the guy saved them at the 11th hour going into the merger with the Bears $$$ wise, he propped Manly up many times saving their bacon.
Then Manly and the Penn brothers dogged him, typical Manly.
Arko may be a legend to you but he and Fulton did everything in their power to guarantee Manly survived, they didn’t care who they paid off, as long as they achieved their end goall.
I sat on Cannon's knee! And I was best man at Arko's wedding.

I’d bend over backwards for Arko’s cannon.I sat on Cannon's knee! And I was best man at Arko's wedding.
