the upgrade of the oval has been reported in the media for months…at even higher figures than this latest article this week…don’t understand the kerfuffle all of sudden …unless it’s purely election scaremongering…

it’s a Govt owned asset used by multiple sports …mens and women’s …. Not sure it’s really fair to compare it with Cronulla and Jubilee when it is the primary rectangle stadium in Perth …
Its only become an issue as the Libs have jumped on it after a couple of articles a few days ago alerted someone in their campaign office no doubt. Its backed Cook into a corner (not helped I have to say by Vlandys comments about him which they Libs have used against him) and he has had to come out looking like he is tough on not spending money on it.

Hopefully it doesnt f**k the whole thing up, or end up delivering us a half arsed investment to what could have been

Bud, the Cumins bid was a half arsed investment. When are you going to get that through your head and let it go?

Correct and it was much higher than the proposed current figure. WA Gov were the ones who flaunted $300m to $350m. The current $200m proposal seems reasonable and within a good albeit tight budget that can definitely work for what the intent is.

If this falls over then it was better than what we end up with! And since when has $50mill in a start up NRL club been a half arsed investment?
Even if the Western Bears bid had been turned down why the f**k wasnt the deal with the Govt wrapped up before hand and the NRL just took over it? They had 2 years to sort this out!

The problem V'landys has is that he likes to feed the goons at the daily terror snippets to gain leverage. This might work for regular people but this is bread and butter for Politicians like Cook.

Theres been stories about all the investments for months. You think its coincidence the Libs suddenly pipe up on this issue a day after a couple of newspapers print stories about a $120mill license fee? Cook literally mentioned in the news clip ' the numbers in the telegraph are fanciful'. So where the f**k has the telegraph got a $120mill license fee from???

My point is … why is it even ***ing news to anyone ? It’s not like it’s been hidden until this week ..

I'd suggest a combination of the mention of a $120mil license fee and just the stories coming out at a time the Libs media dept are looking for things to jump on is why.

WA seem to spending a lot to NRL tho.

Exactly. Sure seems like they want the nrl.

Let's look at nfl expansion teams.

1976 - seahawks and Bucs - $16m
1995 - Panthers and Jaguars - $140m
2002 - Texans - $700m

Imagine what the price would be now. From 95 to 02 the nfl became the absolute king of American sports. And it has only increased its stranglehold since then.

Because it is intended to be a post election commitment. It was ready pre-election but it also could have potentially hurt Cooks credentials to be re-elected. That’s the advice given and how it’s been proceeded. Clearly by his tone that’s the case.

Right now, I wouldn’t be worried. I guarantee you that Cook called PVL and Abdo prior to give a heads up that he needed to make these statements. Water off a ducks back.

the outrage from Cook today is about “demand” regarding the stadium upgrade ..
He's just responding to the Libs article and what they said about not funding anything for HBF park.
Deal should have been done months ago, they should have announced the HBF upgrade for all sports and events, no one would have blinked an eyelid. Then they could have announced the NRl team and the much smaller spend after the election if need be. Hes now between a political rock and hard place and what he says now its going to be hard for him to backtrack on after the election. What a clusterfck.

Id they'd announced in early October it would not be an election issue. 5 months is a long time for the public to move on to the next issue.

we shall see, lets hope so.
