does anyone listen to this station over there ,,, because they mentioned the stadium upgrade 6 months ago and no one batted an eyelid …

so it’s only newsworthy in Perth now because PVL mentioned it and there is an election due ?

Also, did the meeting in Sydney between Cook and PVL in November get much attention in Perth, where pretty much everything in the Tele article this week was reported then in the SMH?

No, it hasn't really made a blip over here. It was only in the media because the libs tried to make an issue of it. There's been no more said about it since the day they brought it up.

Newsflash news ltd owned the reds when it was closed and relocated to melbourne
newsflash ya gimp news ltd only owned it because it was part of the condition that they have % of franchises in sl but in Perths instance the original owners torpedoed the club into debt before they even commence playing footy! But in that whole time local or news Ltd owned they still have local people running it i quite literally said it here

Ya know who jumped to sl and had to sell their franchise rights to news ltd

Ya been reading long cob ? Poor perthwrongs wasn’t even in the country when reds were a thing. His info must of come by steam boat all the way to hull because sure as shit his info coming from coffee dates with geriatrics claiming to be reds admins sure as hell isn’t right lol

rugby league digest touches on all this. They investigated and gathered all possible information to make it into a pod worth discussing. Listen to it and stop being an ego driven pile of cow paddies just because ya have to try be right everytime because in doing so ya actually always wrong. And I means always wrong. Accept ya don’t know shit cob

"Papua New Guinea will become the seventeenth team in the NRL in 2028, while other sides including a second New Zealand team and Mana-Pasifika side both expected to submit bids to become the eighteenth team".

Bit of an average article anyway, seems they've forgotten the Dolphins already joined.

Edit: Think Wookie blocked me, can't quote him. But it's from the article he posted.

Perth will be 2027 so team 18
PNG will be 2028 so team 19

Team 20 is likely nz by 2030 but maybe delayed till next tv deal so Ipswich comes into play v Christchurch

You can't block someone like that on LU. Can you?

Nevermind, I can quote his other posts. I think it was just that post that I couldn't quote; because the article was posted as a quote, or similar.

On another note, I'm really hoping WA are a massive success when/if they come in. If they're playing well on field, packing out their stadium, financially going well, producing local players in the short to medium term and giving WA a good return on investment with tourism; I feel like an Adelaide team wouldn't be far off with governmental support. If this model proves to be a success.

wonder how much this journo was pushed to write this tripe below lol

Most West Aussies, whose sporting loyalties lie elsewhere, won’t be thrilled with splashing tens or hundreds of millions to import a bunch of Sydney-based players west.
Has no journalist in WA been made aware that NRL are the ones paying for the club?

Given how low participation numbers are in WA currently, it would take decades — and many more millions — before a true local talent pipeline is established to sustain a top-flight team.
Well isnt that the point of the $12m per season investment into local talent to bring them up to speed properly and in an expediated fashion? This line contradicts the entire article lol

Roger Cook loves rugby league. Really, really loves it.
It’s a love that hasn’t been diminished by the overwhelming indifference to the object of his affection from his fellow West Australians.
Their apathy has only intensified his adoration and strengthened his determination to make you love rugby league too.

If only he could convince you to tear your eyes away from Aussie Rules to watch a single game (they’re only 80 minutes!) he knows you’d see what he sees.
Roger. Mate. Stop trying to make rugby league happen.
According to the Australian Sports Commission’s Ausplay sporting census, 6188 West Australians took part in organised rugby league in 2023-24. That puts it about on par with frisbee (5801) and jujitsu (5771) in terms of participation.

Sensibly, the Australian Flying Disc Association — the nation’s peak frisbee body — hasn’t asked the WA Government for $320 million to shift an east coast-based frisbee franchise west.
That’s how much the National Rugby League wants WA to cough up to revive the Western Bears proposal, under which the North Sydney Bears — a team ejected from the game’s premier league a quarter of a century ago — would move across the Nullarbor to compete under a Perth badge.
That eye-watering price tag would include a $120m licence fee as well as an estimated $200m to upgrade HBF Park.
The NRL might have unveiled its sparkling new jewel in the Pacific on Thursday, Papua New Guinea, but it still might not beat a Perth team into the competition.

It is far too price to pay, a fact even Mr Cook admits. He called the proposed price tag “ridiculous”.
“I like (NRL boss) Peter V’landys, we’ve had great conversations, but if he thinks that Western Australians are going to be treated as second-class NRL citizens, if he thinks we’re going to see a repeat of the Western Reds, he’s got another thought coming. The deal is off.”
But he hasn’t given up entirely, saying there is still a possibility that WA will write a big cheque to the NRL in the future.
How much is too much? $100m? Double that?
Mr Cook was coy on what the magic number might be.
Any potential deal will need to secure top value for money for West Australian taxpayers.

The Pacific island nation will officially enter the NRL in four years, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed.

Meanwhile, despite being home to the most successful team in the NBL’s history, Perth has a dire shortage of indoor basketball courts.
Basketball WA estimates they need 30 new courts in the metropolitan region and another 50 in the regions to meet player demand.
The number of Indigenous players reaching the AFL has fallen off a cliff as bush pathway programs flounder.
WA has a proud sporting history. Any taxpayer money must go to where it will best serve West Australian interests.

Kerry stokes sponsored souths for five million dollars when the court demanded they come up with ten million in sponsorship or lose the case and they were five million short

Seven is under huge financial pressure with large debts and an expensive afl deal which is going to eat up all their profits

It’s interesting seeing afl people being afraid of a Perth nrl team that’s made me more positive it’s a good thing

But it's ok for WA Gov's of past years to directly invest into aussie rules to the point they held an inquiry over it? lol
