There’s no local club in the competition, of course ratings aren’t big, that’s why you expand, to grow participation and ratings. The ratings have been quite strong for event games though.

Seven & the afl are really working overtime to spike any funding deal for the nrl.
Precisely - the idea is that expansion brings new fans because they would then have a team of their own to watch.

At the moment the audience in Perth is probably just either ex-pat East Coasters & Kiwis or locals watching out of curiosity (maybe some who've adopted an existing NRL team too).

Expansion will bring locals who haven't been particularly invested in the game previously.

It's not a hard concept to grasp, right??

Does anyone have the text for this article.
Hehe the AFL west is really stressing now! We should take it as a positve sign they are running scared of the prospect of a successful nrl club in perth!

Could also be his politician`s way of pushing it off into the future and getting the media off his back.
yeh basically justifying it not being an election issue by saying it won’t happen for a few years and plenty of negotiation to have before then. I’m not a big Cook fan but he’s paying it pretty well to make it a non election issue.

Yes … this could be the case …im not sensing a lot of urgency from either side though these past few months
I’d suggest the nrl were keen to get a deal done in october to announce same time as png but the nrls new demands after the western bears bid was rejected were unpalatable and wa govt rejected them and have been happy to keep negotiating. As it got nearer election time they’ve wisely decided to make it a non issue by pushing any decision to past the election. Labor will get back In, a deal will be done in a few months. Frustratingly this election hoo-ha means he is unlikely to announce any decision immediately after the election. He’ll need some time to justify his comments on it not being an election issue as no decision have been made I’d think.
I just hope the club gets everything it needs from wa govt and nrl to make it a success.
Can’t see a 2027 kick off Now. Wouldn’t surprise me of they don’t bring both teams in together in 2028 for the next tv deal.

i was hoping we might get an announcement around April and the double header but wouldn’t surprise me if it is now June time around the origin game.

WA Premier Roger Cook Tells NRL Boss To Shut Up - Xav & Katie - 92.9 Triple M

All tongue in cheek. there ya have it folks. now cookies all giddy giddy again and positive.
redbears was right (again) it seems in what he said on weekend or something.

looking like it went as below:
* nda in place due to cook not wanting this deal to become an election issue,
* deal or numbers of deal got leaked and it became an election issue,
* cookie had to be tough and say what he said to save face and down play it,
* now it's all sweet again and genuinely good banter (which is a good thing) and him being positive.

AFL not wanting bears to happen is why it should happen.

The West is bigger in print and has no online presence being behind a paywall. A boomers only paper.

Younger crowds will have exposure online to WAToday
thanks for the feedback. interesting. thewest are on a mission at the current between sniffing up libb's farts and being anti-cook nrl agenda. hilarious really,

Crazy how in the space of 12 years there were 13 new clubs and 12 out the door
expansion since 82
82 - raiders steelers
88 - broncos knights giants
91 - seagulls (took giants license)
95 - cowboys warriors reds crushers
96 - gladiators then chargers (2 different license holders who took seagulls license)
97 - mariners
98 - storm
07 - titans

survived - raiders broncos knights cowboys warriors storm titans
died - giants, seagulls, gladiators/chargers, crushers, reds, mariners
merged - steelers (w/ dragons)

cant rush this west aussie bears. needs to be done correctly.

Not surprising that a WA based paper is supporting the dominant sport in their home state. Of course the AFL would feel threatened and may be the ones pushing the negative NRL sentiment in WA. But I bet if the WA Bears (or whatever they end up being called) make a march to the semis they would be a front page story and have a lot WA people behind them. Everyone loves a winner and papers love the clicks. AFL might not be happy however.

Owned by 7 west . They and the afl have pretty much had this state to themselves for decades. Nine have bought the biggest talk back radio station here and now want an NRL club here to help their exposure for TV.
This was always coming.
