Those who think Christchurch is a better market are f**king morons. WB you are better than this, Perth is the best market in for NRL to tap into, NQAT.
It's very much a case of "one's strength is another's weakness".

If you stack up each aspect - from stadium to timezones to rugby culture to AFL presence to Governmeny money, where Perth is stong, Christchurch isn't - and vice versa.

They really are the inverse of each other.

Given that, it's absolutely plausible it could come down to who has the best working relationship with the current NRL administration.

Be funny if now the NRL team is off the table that the WA Gov decides to upgrade HBF in the next few years

I would laugh …

I was thinking last night …. Do the Perth NRL team actually need a renovated stadium from Day 1 ? I didn’t hear too many complaints about the stadium when they played a game there last year …it’s more of a “nice to have “ and I’m sure they would get around to upgrading it eventually…

I suspect that there is more to the story then just this , and this may just be a convenient excuse …. Unlike PNG where all the clubs got $3m each … there is no payoff here immeadiately and the clubs would need to be patient for their money waiting until the NRL eventually sold the team

Tasmania initial costs :
State Govt to pay $375m( a state struggling for money)
Feds $240m
AFL $ 15m
Grand total $630m

Costs now increased to $775m for a population of 575,000
The AFL going to pay for the $145m increase . No way Jose. The $15m sure don't look massive based on those figures.
Pretty sure there’s also funding for the other stadium in Tasmania ? So the total is over a billion.

Plus the state govt is giving the afl team 12 million pa to cover its losses / grassroots funding

Those who think if the NRL had accepted the October 2024 bid then everything would've been tickety boo are also f**king morons. The WA Government have been shown to be untrustworthy with the NRL, goodness knows how much they would've let down a bid from a pawn broker.

Not saying Perth Oval is not a viable location considering Kogarah and Shake Park are somehow NRL venues but Rugby Roger has really shit the bed. If you don't think he would've f**ked over Cummins like he did PVL, then I have some magic beans to sell you.

So disappointing.
Why is Perth better than Christchurch ?

Sure I’m having fun winding up Perth red but I actually believe chch is a better option on every metric used to judge expansion teams

I’ve always thought Pvl was batty picking Perth first

Nrl is number one sport on many measures without a Perth nrl team

There is no credible bid for Christchurch. There is no govt funding on the table either.

It would be by far the smallest non-RL city in the competition, which has inherent issues regarding funding, crowd support etc.

The Warriors are only really still just establishing themselves and diluting their fanbase isn't going to help.

From what I can tell the WA Premier has maintained this stance publicly for months.

Yet because a few so- called "insiders" claimed 'Don't worry about, he is has agreed something else in private'. Suddenly he is the issue???

Surely you establish the team, demonstrate their value and then lobby for stadia upgrades? This zero sum game means no expansion anywhere.

It was very much bad luck that can all be pinpointed to that one final season.

Of course there was some bad management with player salaries going up 300% during SL, but their biggest fumble was being too accommodating and not taking the Piggins route.
Or not going to super league

What was the point of loyalty and morality to have no club

The only thing he specified in public was that no money would be going directly to the NRL…. It’s been speculated in the media for many months that a renovation of the stadium had been put on the table …we know he has spoken to PVL many times and flew to Sydney in November for a meeting… if he reneged on this promise than I think it deserves to be called out , as he is now directing the blame completely on the money hungry NRL…

I just want to add that this is pretty much on Rita Saffioti. As both Treasurer and Sports minister, her 2 roles at play here genuinely clashed and conflicted. She handled both pretty poorly. As stated yesterday, there were agreed to terms and conditions and she is the individual that essentially broke them.

The stadium will require upgrades sooner or later. So whether it’s now or in the year 3 of a 4 year term, it’s somewhat irrelevant I think. The understanding is that the NRL weren’t pushing for the immediate upgrade anyway. They were happy with the set in stone commitment and for the trigger to be pulled on it when ready.

If the NRL thought they were at fault here then they’d be on the front foot trying to control the narrative. There’s a reason they haven’t come out and said anything yet. However I’m sure we will hear from them in the coming week.

Honestly, if I’m part of the WA RL fans and/or Bears fans and/or expansion fans then I wouldn’t be too concerned. Once people can rationalise their thoughts properly, past the emotion (and clearly some here need to talk to a psychiatrist) then they’ll be able to compute that this is merely pushed back and not “off the table”. I am not worried one bit.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but talking about bad decisions by NS management, didn't the licence or right to continue to play in the competition reside with Manly if the Northern Eagles JV folded? Why would NS management allow their biggest rival to have such power?

But only having PNG confirmed, hurts TV negotiations bigtime.

Having a presence in most Australian Capital cities is worth far more.

How does she over rule Cook on this ? I’m not buying that it still wasn’t Cook’s decision at the end of the day

Penrith have won 4 comps in a row, now getting that stadium upgrade, they play 20 minutes away at a state of the art stadium..struggling to get crowds.

How's Perth going to go when in their formative years and playing in front of 5k at the WACA ? That would be a disaster!

Perth should be building a brand new rectangular stadium. They have the Force, Glory and an NRL team.. in a city of 2 million!
It's ridiculous to think they're not committing to a brand new stadium but it's worse, they're not even doing a refurbishment!!
This is a government with a 4 billion dollar surplus!

AFL f**kery all day long. They pushed the " wasteful spending propaganda " while pushing for a new 800 million dollar stadium for the small indebted Tasmanian government..

That's what you get with an AFL state.

Then there's Christchurch with a brand new 30,000 covered, state of the art stadium begging for a team!

I think the choice is clear.

He is that Moron matt guy that disappeared a while back
For clarity my name is Gerry and I reside in Thornlie, WA. Which is south of Perth. I would have thought that much was obvious given my username. Maybe this place is just too east coast centric. Weird for fans who supposedly want to expand into the state of WA.

The problem is that this is a figment of your imagination.

In the biggest COL crisis in history, public spending is a big issue.

If you think the Tas Stadium thing is cut and dried your kidding, it's a political timebomb

If you have time and are able to I would appreciate an answer on my questions on the post I last replied to one of your post in this thread. Thanks mate.
