I just want to add that this is pretty much on Rita Saffioti. As both Treasurer and Sports minister, her 2 roles at play here genuinely clashed and conflicted. She handled both pretty poorly. As stated yesterday, there were agreed to terms and conditions and she is the individual that essentially broke them.
The stadium will require upgrades sooner or later. So whether it’s now or in the year 3 of a 4 year term, it’s somewhat irrelevant I think. The understanding is that the NRL weren’t pushing for the immediate upgrade anyway. They were happy with the set in stone commitment and for the trigger to be pulled on it when ready.
If the NRL thought they were at fault here then they’d be on the front foot trying to control the narrative. There’s a reason they haven’t come out and said anything yet. However I’m sure we will hear from them in the coming week.
Honestly, if I’m part of the WA RL fans and/or Bears fans and/or expansion fans then I wouldn’t be too concerned. Once people can rationalise their thoughts properly, past the emotion (and clearly some here need to talk to a psychiatrist) then they’ll be able to compute that this is merely pushed back and not “off the table”. I am not worried one bit.
100% looks like you’re right as usual. It looks like it’s the stadium thing.
NRL: Rita Saffioti says deal ‘appears to have fallen through,’ rules out upgrades to HBF
The NRL made “extraordinary demands” of the State Government and WA taxpayers, WA’s sport minister has said, as negotiations for a Perth-based NRL team remain on the cusp of failure.
Rita Saffioti said the securing of a WA-based team “appears to have fallen through” and hit out at the Sydney-based league for leaking to east coast media during negotiations.
It comes after Nine newspapers reported on Friday that the NRL rejected Premier Roger Cook’s offer of conditional taxpayer support, with the League expected to abandon its Perth plan in the coming week.
Ms Saffioti said not a single cent in the proposed deal would have financed the NRL, and instead the money was aimed at “supporting the game” in WA.
“The NRL saw WA as a bit of a cash cow and made some extraordinary demands, which we don’t believe were ever put to other similar teams,” Ms Saffioti told reporters on Sunday.
“There was a private sector bid that was put forward, and we’re very disappointed that it was rejected.
“So it appears it’s fallen through, but as I said, I’ve seen no formal communication back from the NRL.”

“It’s disappointing that the NRL has, I think, conducted these negotiations and discussions through the media, and also made other claims about things that have been happening.”
An April deadline set by Australian Rugby League Commission boss Peter V’landys, ahead of bargaining for the league’s broadcast rights, was described as “achievable” by Mr Cook only last week.
Under the terms being negotiated, WA would have become home to the Western Bears, with the now-defunct North Sydney side moving to Perth.
A deal was also mooted to include a redevelopment of HBF Park in Perth, to become the home ground of the Bears.
Ms Saffioti said there were “no immediate plans” by the government to upgrade HBF Park, which hosts rugby and soccer matches.

Premier Roger Cook outlined his disappointment on Friday amid claims the NRL saw the State as a “cash cow”.
“This week, we made an offer to support a potential NRL licence in WA. It was based upon support for grassroots, while protecting the interests of WA taxpayers,” he said.
“Given our location on the Indian Ocean Rim and in the same time zone as 60 per cent of the world’s population, the strategic value of a Western Australian side should be self-evident to the NRL.
“I love rugby league, but as I said during the election, I will always do what’s right for WA.”
Mr Cook and Ms Saffioti previously flew to NSW for talks with Mr V’landys.
Ms Saffioti previously said she would not be rushed on an agreement despite Mr V’landys said it had to happen quickly while broadcast negotiations for the 2027 season loomed for the League.

How many times have you predicted that the deal is done and will be announced in a few weeks, only for something to go wrong so you've got a convenient excuse for why it didn't happen as you predicted?
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll manage to find someone else to blame next time too.
