Could someone explain to me the urgency of the tv deal ?
why can’t they spend a few months negotiating Perth Bears and then go to market for broadcast rights ?
They’ve been trying to negotiate this deal for over 6 months

The wa govt has lied to the arlc

It’s basically whether the arl sees accepting a sh@t deal is in the best interests of the game …. Which it might be

Going to market with more content is always a good thing esp if they want to get the biggest tv deal in Australian history

The cynic in me says its due to the AFL deal kicking in this year and the massive revenue gap that will be shown at end of year between the two codes that is going to make the current NRL tv deal look even worse than before. At least if he gets the tv deal done now, and presumably its a good one, then it takes the wind out of the huge revenue AFL will show at years end. But thats me being cynical :)

They've been talking for 2.5 years lol They could have done a deal with WA govt 18 months ago if they hadnt gone through the whole fishing exercise.
Then they had the choice to do a deal in October.
NRL's choice to start again in Nov then let it drag into an election period.
And here we are

He asked why not delay the tv deal

The answer was cause nothings going to change and it’s either accept this current deal or move on

In an AFL state a % of public opinion and AFL opinion are the same. Stadiums are a hard sell at best of times. Vast majority of the public are not sports fans and will always think stadium spend would be better used for things that matter to them such as hospitals and schools. Then you have the sporting public who are happy to see stadium spend on their sport. In an AFL state the support for a rectangular stadium spend is always going to be low.
Normally it doesn't matter so much and it can get pushed through anyway with some BS justification (see Allianz) but in an election race thats never going to happen. I mean look at the recent stadium fiasco in NSW where you'd think the public would be all for spending on RL stadiums yet the NSw govt pulled back from the $800mil committment to a $300mill Penrith only spend, eventually.
The major upgrade of HBF in 2012 was justified on the back of Western Force needing a home (they were playing at Subi oval) and the notion that the WA Reds bid would get up in NRL. The next upgrade was justified on back of 2023 world cup needs. At moment when you have Glory drawing 7-9k and Force drawing 10-12k its hard to justify why HBF needs $200mill spending on it to that stadium skeptical public.

I hope we can get the grassroots funding sorted, the stadium upgrade is parked and we get launched in 2027, at end of the first season they can announce plans to upgrade HBF park when there is far less political spotlight on it.

The latest media reports are they have moved past the stadium issue …it appears that this can’t be upgraded anyway for several years given they are locked into future tournaments there …so anything committed to in this area could have been ultimately walked back before it happened by the WA Government later in any event …. The NRL has seen backflipping from State Governments with stadium commitments before

I have expressed previously that the stadium thing has been a red herring ….its ultimately now about how much money the Govt is putting into the game and it looks like they are $60m apart

Wa govt was the one who approached the nrl for a team

They put together an attractive package

Then when the deal was done, without warning, the nrl first have taken off most of those promises

Why were they promising stadium upgrades anyway if they weren’t possible for a while

After they’ve cut out the stadium funding the least they could’ve done was throw the nrl a bone and agreed to the junior funding

It’s like Perth doesn’t really want a team anymore and is making an offer they know will get refused to save face

I’m hoping, with absolutely nothing to back it up, that the stadium has been put on the back burner as there are plans for federal funding to come if Labour win next month. Cook hinted at it in the media recently, these little quotes don’t tend to come from nowhere.

The “can’t upgrade until after 2027” excuse seems a little iffy to me. Doubt any substantial upgrades would have happened before 2027 anyway if they’re not announced yet.

Who in the media has expressed the stadium issue is still a thing ? The NRL seems to have moved past this it appears

Where has it been said the nrl has accepted no stadium funding ?

We don’t know if the wa govt offer the 120 million In junior funding plus coe would even be acceptable

This does come down to egos does Pvl want to accept being made a mug of and thinking whether he can trust cook long term

We don’t know anything..we need to rely what’s reported in the media for any info and even then it might not be correct …

lm just saying that I can’t recall any mention now about the stadium the past week or so …but for all we know the NRL has rejected the bid already and are waiting to announce it publicly..perhaps after the games in Perth this week

I don't know the Perth/WA political landscape but i would think a new stadium in Perth is a much easier sell than anywhere on the east coast due to the fact that there are no other major population centres in WA. The state also seems to be crying out for more sports/entertainment content. The problem is construction costs have sky rocketed in the last 5 years, but then you are the one that keeps telling us how rich WA is....

Yeh 2.5 years ago lol

They've offered $7mill a year in jnr funding over the term they are in Govt. They offered the stadium, allegedly, before a NRl decision dragged out and allowed it to became a political football.
Sign the deal in October. Western Bears are now building, WA govt is paying for everything they wanted and we are all celebrating at Saturdays NRL event and buying our membership packs.
Instead here we are.

For the umpteenth Its not a question of if WA can afford it. We are coined. Its a political decision based on being backed into a corner in the election about how much they would give the 'East Coast'. Unless Trump destroys the global economy the money will still be there in the state coffers in a couple of years to make it happen as long as theres an NRL club to use it.
