NRL approves Perth proposal for WA-based Bears team after ‘increased’ offer from Roger Cook

The Australian Rugby League Commission has approved a bid to bring a NRL team to WA after receiving an increased proposal from the State Government.
WA Premier Roger Cook made a higher offer to get the deal over the line with the ARLC signing off on the in-principle agreement on Wednesday morning, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Mr Cook had previously made a $55 million offer to the league, which included $35 million allocated to local schools and the Clontarf Foundation to grow Rugby League in WA and a $20 million centre of excellence in Malaga.
Sources told Sydney media that a meeting was being held by the NRL on Thursday as the agreement must be signed by the clubs and the Rugby League Players’ Association before the NRL can go back to the State Government with its position.
The deal will mean the Bears club will return to the competition and be based out of Perth from 2027.
It came after Mr Cook held his first post-election meeting with League chairman Peter V’Landys and chief executive Andrew Abdo on April 11, which he described as “positive”.
The NRL has been accused of leaking details of demands to east coast media, while Mr Cook previously said the competition had been treating WA as a “cash cow”.
Mr Cook has also previously said the NRL would not receive a single cent of taxpayers’ money.
The Premier’s office has been contacted for comment.
More to come

Still not counting any chickens but at last looks like some good news. Some media has the revised offer from Cook at $50mill to grassroots. Hopefully gets sorted by the weekend and we can have some offical news. I wonder who leaked this to the Sydney media, again?

NRL revives Perth Bears expansion bid after new $50m commitment

The Bears’ 25-year exile has moved one step closer to ending with a return in the 2027 season.
By Digital Staff
The ARL Commission, led by chairman Peter V’landys, has approved a revived Perth bid.

The NRL has green-lit Perth’s expansion bid after a new $50m commitment from Western Australia revived the North Sydney Bears’ hopes of a 2027 comeback.
Talks stalled after WA Premier Roger Cook accused the NRL of treating the state as a “cash cow”.
But his revised proposal has reportedly been approved in principle by the ARL Commission, with crunch meetings and final negotiations to come.

The Bears’ arrival would be the second in a staged expansion, after the Dolphins arrived in 2023 with Papua New Guinea set to become the 19th team in 2028.
The ARLC met on Wednesday morning and endorsed the increased financial offer to base the Bears in Perth.
The provisional agreement requires approval from NRL clubs and the Rugby League Players’ Association before final negotiations with the WA government.
The NRL has reportedly scheduled a Thursday meeting with a club subcommittee and will consult the RLPA following the commission’s conditional backing.
WA initially pledged a $20 million centre of excellence in Malaga and $35 million for grassroots programs, while the NRL sought $120 million over a decade.
Both sides reportedly compromised to advance negotiations with the revised bid worth $50m.
Once rubber-stamped by the clubs the deal would see the return of North Sydney to the top-flight competition after 25 years in exile.

The NRL earlier dismissed a private consortium bid led by Cash Converters’ Peter Cummins, which refused a licence fee before later proposing $20 million.
The league opted instead to partner with the WA government.
Under the proposed model, the NRL would initially operate the team before transitioning ownership to members and elected directors.
The WA government would co-fund community, pathways, and infrastructure projects.

Western Bears sounds a lot better than Perth Bears imo

although do you want a 'Wests' and 'Western' in the same comp?
That domain isn't operational currently either. Western probably makes more sense.

It is a small thing and you can buy it but it does speak to the professionalism of the bids. Agree or disagree with the Kea at least they have a hub where you can go and find out information around their bid etc - https://southislandkea.com/ . You would have thought the Bears would own www.Bears.com.au but it looks like they don't.

Small thing but there would be someone out there now trying to guess the name and sign it up for a quick buck.
