A few nuggets in the Sacko interview
Likely name Perth Bears
Regular season game wont be at NSO, commercially doesn't make sense
KO will be 2027
5000 RL players in WA this year
Approx 20 WA kids a year U20 move interstate to play and have a shot at NRL.

I did laugh at his Perth Reds slip of the tongue :)
Hey PR, I see your still going strong with your quest to have a WA team, good effort.
Sorry if this has been asked before as I'm not a regular.
What is the general feeling amongst the rugby league community in the Perth district regarding the brand name and colours?
Are the majority happy with the prospect of continuing the legacy of an old Sydney based team or would they prefer their own sole identity?
Is there unique parts of WA that play the game similar to East Coast City/Country or interstate Qld.
Where is the broader game played at junior level and subdistrct?
Who and where are the pathways and junior development.
Who will be the feeder club/s.
Do you think it has any chance of folding in the future as did the Western Reds (I know that it was a different league)
Do you envisage travelling issues for teams such as Perth, PNG, Melbourne, NZ and rep games, particularly if backed up. I know this could be avoided by scrutinised and careful planning but one thinks it's bound to happen. The distance from Perth to Auckland is a tad long or can you see Perth players living on the East Coast.
Cheers big ears. :)

Nah I say let them.

If they want to piss away money and put on a poor game day experience for their fans, it's their choice.
The beer and footy festival held at NSO on some years is a great experience for fans.

You’re confusing your personal opinion as facts. If you like to point your finger and laugh as per one of your posts today, start with the bloke looking back at you in the mirror.

I don't know if the game day experience is something NSO can really be knocked for, unless your game day experience involves an irrational bias against heritage-listed stands.

Titans makes most sense.
How about this..

In order to activate the engage the traditional north Sydney fanbase, every year they have 1 pre season game and 1 nrl game on the east coast - alternating the pre season and nrl game with central coast and nso. The nrl game at nso always featuring a lower drawing team like Titans, but the central coast alternating game can feature a Souths or roosters for example as it’s a larger venue. Then Manly take their home game to allianz, ensuring a large crowd for that fixture.

Preseason at NSO doesn’t work. The game would have to be much later in the season proper possibly around Origin 3 time.

Peter V’landys on future of Magic Round, fifth Queensland NRL franchise, return of the Bears, and more

Queensland’s hopes of securing a fifth NRL team are alive according to Peter V’landys. In a wide-ranging interview, the ARL Commission boss reveals details on the return of the Bears, the future of Magic Round and more.
Peter Badel Exclusive

BEARS ARE BACK
Speaking for the first time since revelations a Perth franchise is set to be rubber-stamped for entry in 2027, V’landys heralded the return of the Bears after 26 years in the NRL wilderness.
V’landys, NRL CEO Andrew Abdo and WA premier Roger Cook will put the finishing touches on the $85 million deal over the next fortnight, with the ARLC boss living up to his pledge to bring back the Bears.
“The Bears deal is not finalised yet, but the euphoria I have seen has been extraordinary,” he said.
“That’s one of the reasons why we wanted to bring the Bears back.

The Bears are nearly back. Picture: Gregg Porteous
“There’s a lot of people who support the Bears and they have a readymade supporter base. They have the pathways with their juniors and it’s a perfect marriage if it happens with Perth.
“It could be one of the real success stories of the future.
“Perth is a goldmine for the NRL. It has enormous potential. It gives us a national footprint to a degree and the time zone works really well with our global and expansion strategies.”
Those strategies include the NRL targeting rugby union in South Africa and Argentina to provide fresh talent supply chains for the Bears and Papua New Guinea, who enter as the 19th team in 2028.
“They are genuine targets, absolutely,” V’landys said.
“Look at the rugby union player for the Roosters, Mark Nawaqanitawase (Wallabies convert) has been amazing.
“He will bring people to the game and converts take some time to adjust to the sport, but he has been successful after three or four games.
“If he is an example of what we can get out of rugby union, especially out of South Africa and Argentina, absolutely we will look at that region.”

STRIVE FOR FIVE
The Dolphins have been a revelation since joining the NRL in 2023 and V’landys revealed Queensland could have a fifth franchise as part of a 20-team league.
The ARL Commission has been underwhelmed by Kiwi bids for a second New Zealand team, opening the door for the Brisbane Tigers or Jets to be Queensland’s fifth NRL club.
“Another NRL team in Queensland is an option, absolutely,” he said.
“We have never ruled out a fifth team in Queensland, there’s a lot of options for the 20th team and that’s one of them.

“I wouldn’t say the business case isn’t stacking up for 20 teams, it’s more a case of the bids not being very good.
“There’s a difference between the quality of the bids and the business case.
“I think the business case could stack up. We’re in no rush to go to 20 teams.
“We’ll be taking it slowly to make sure we are doing the right thing, but Queensland is definitely one of the options.
“It is not a foregone conclusion that the 20th team will be a second team in New Zealand.
“The Dolphins didn’t cannibalise the Broncos.
“In fact what they did was create another rivalry between the Dolphins and Broncos. If you add another Queensland team, you can create more rivalries with the Broncos and Dolphins.
“Naturally, we would have deep discussions with the Broncos, Dolphins, Cowboys and Titans and want their support if we were to expand again in Queensland.”

John doesn’t have a say in this. A game in NSO will be part of it.

A game in NSO is no different to Dogs holding a game in Belmore, Panthers in Dubbo/Bathurst, Tigers in Mudgee, Dolphins in Rockhampton/Sunshine Coast etc etc.

None of the above are about commercial opportunities.
Games being taken to those regions isn’t the same as taking a game to NSO. People from the North Shore are able to get to Allianz and the SCG without much trouble, given we often hear about their conversion to AFL and RU and neither the Swans or Waratahs men’s teams play at NSO on any sort of regular basis.

Outside of Perth, is there another suitable stadium in WA they could take a one off game to or even a trial? Considering that about a 100 people and some sheep live in regional WA I’m guessing the answer is no..
Not really. The oval at Bunbury has recently been upgraded for the AFL games being taken there but thats about it. Bunbury would be ok for a pre season game but like NSO isnt fit to host an NRL game really.

Welcome back to the madhouse lol

re feeling of WA fans, most have accepted its this way or no way. Not ideal and most would prefer a stand alone genuine WA club but majority will get behind the Perth Bears.

In the city the clubs are quite well spread across the metro area. Theres a big uptake of the game in the new outer suburbs as east coasters move here and look for cheaper housing options. In regional WA the South West area has a pretty thriving Jnr club spread. There's also a fair bit of Rl happening in the far North.

Bottom is a list of WA and NS clubs showing jnr pathways and giving you an ide of where the WA clubs are based

Hopefully not! No SL war, NRL owning the club, backing of WA govt, a decent stadium to play out of, an arguably bigger RL fanbase. The pieces are in place for it to be a success this time.

Travel is always an issue for anyone in Perth! But we have about 10 Perth professional sports club that play in national comps so its clearly manageable.

Pathways will be through the NS set up plus WA development. WA govt is putting in an alleged $5mill a year to increase grassroots and create strong WA pathways.

No it will be a Perth club based in Perth, training at a new Perth Centre of excellence.

Exciting stuff hey.
When you said East I immediately thought west :)
As far as travel goes if anyone fields complaints it will be from other teams I feel.
Playing Schedules will be a headache.
