I was wondering about Conradie too. I just watched a tape of a 2002 SA/Aus match, (I'm reduced to that as RU is no longer shown in Canada), and Bolla conradie played a great game. And he's still young I believe. Is he hurt?

Bolla can't even getting a starting spot in his provincial side Western Province he is constantly playing off the bench shame too, he is a very good young halfback (reminds me a bit of a MUCH younger version of Gregan) and could add that spark in attack around the ruck the Saffa's so desperately need.

I am very surprised abot Canada though, I thought they were on their way up in the rugby world, IIRC they got a crowd of around 15,000-20,000 against a second string Welsh side and they performed pretty well on the 7's circuit and with no NHL season this year you would think they would get some coverage.

Actually they do show some of Canada's few games on TV - a tournament called the Churchill Cup with the US, England A, and 1 other team was televised. The Wales game in Toronto was not on TV however.

What I meant was that a Canadian sports network (Sportsnet) used to show a weekly game from FoxSports World in the US - Super 12 and 3N matches, even NPC and Currie Cup sometimes. But they're not on here anymore, I think because FSW dropped their coverage. I watched a lot of games from 2001-2004, and I miss it now as I follow the 3N over the internet.

As for Canadian rugby itself, hopefully the IRB's cash injection will give our national team some improvement.

Stuart, good summary of the situation at 10, Locky in the previous post suggested Rogers at 10. Could he do it, would he have the flair and skills for that position?

Looks like Eddie Jones is going to give Rogers a go at #10:

"
It was a tough decision between Matty Rogers and Lachie MacKay at flyhalf, but we believe Mat has the passing and kicking skills we need to start the game, and he can also take the ball to the line," said Jones.

I hope Rogers goes well. Boy do we need another good number 10. Flately and Giteau are more 12s.

Interesting comments from a former Wallaby:

Which is why Moon will watch Mitchell with special interest. He considers him an exceptional prospect who could cement a place with a big game. "Young Drew: he just goes from strength to strength," Moon says. "To me Drew's not programmed yet, and neither is Rogers. They just run all over the park and find the breaks. To me, we're too stereotyped in what we do."

Moon says this isn't a criticism of anyone, simply a function of age whereby players who have been around a few years tend to become habitual. "Talk to them and they will tell you they run this channel or that channel, or do this or that," he says. "I sometimes think the old youthful exuberance thing really counts. The irrational player is a lot more difficult to defend against - like Drew Mitchell the other night [against South Africa]. He's the type of player who throws conventional defensive patterns into disarray."

There is another, even more important factor contributing to stereotyped back-line play, Moon says: the rules of the game.

"My view is that this is a problem for the International Rugby Board. We've got a game that's almost approaching gridiron in terms of defensive patterns," he says. "It's not even like league. At least the leaguies get a decent run-up against each other - the ref keeps them 20 metres apart. Our poor guys get five metres. We've just got all these big, short, squat men running at each other. Nobody can think outside the square when they're facing that sort of situation …"
