a bit disappointed in that team.

must say, he most bizarre selection is Lulia in the 20 man squad. he was WOEFUL in the trials. absolutely terrible.

Surely Taia is over Pato is only on account of game time.

5 aku

6 mullo
7 scotty

8 fa'aoso

Taia is a great performer and Pato seems to need a bit more time. Frankly I'd rather see Pato, Taia, Simpson with Houston coming off the bench but that's just me.

Houston seems more of a worker than the other two. I'm a bit baffled by Pato off the bench too, but I'm a Taia fan and am interested to see what he can do. More smokescreens though?

Knights weigh up loan deal for Walsh

DIMINUTIVE Knights halfback Luke Walsh could be sent to France on a short-term loan to replace injured Catalans Dragons and former Brisbane Broncos playmaker Casey McGuire.

Walsh played 13 NRL games last year and was considered the most likely successor to Andrew Johns, but the 20-year-old was overlooked for Newcastle's pipe-opener against Canberra on Saturday because his pre-season was disrupted by injury and illness.

McGuire broke his cheekbone in a head clash with former Kiwi Test back-rower Ali Lauiti'iti in the Dragons' game against Leeds last month and has been ruled out for at least six weeks.

That prompted Dragons coach Mick Potter to contact Australian-based player agents, including Walsh's manager Todd Buckingham, who suggested the French connection to Knights coach Brian Smith late last week.

The Dragons want Walsh for eight weeks but Smith, who is yet to settle on an established halves pairing for this season, is reluctant to let him go for that long.

Buckingham believed the deal would benefit Walsh and the Knights as the player would gain match fitness and confidence in Super League and return to Newcastle a more complete footballer.

Walsh is contracted to the Knights until the end of 2009 after signing a two-year extension the day after his NRL debut in June last year.

"They want someone for eight weeks," Buckingham said.

"They approached us and asked if we had any halfbacks, and I raised it with Smithy a couple of days ago.

"I just said that if he's going to start the year in reserve grade [NSW Cup], how about he goes over there and does a short stint in the Super League?"

It is understood the length of the contract, how much the Dragons were prepared to pay, insurance issues and NRL salary-cap implications were among the administrative obstacles, but Buckingham hoped to finalise negotiations in the next few days.

"There's a lot of boxes that need to be ticked to get through it all . . . and obviously the deal has to be worked through first before any of the other boxes can be ticked," he said.

"Walshy's pretty keen. It would be a great experience to be able to go over there because you'd rather be playing Super League than NSW Cup."

The Knights released Luke Quigley to the Dragons under similar circumstances last year when Aaron Gorrell was injured then struggled without a specialist hooker later in their NRL season when Danny Buderus and Terence Seu Seu were injured and unavailable.

Knights operations manager Warren Smiles said the club did not want a recurrence but could see the benefits in Walsh playing Super League for a short period.

"It's an idea that's been floated by his management, and we're investigating it," Smiles said.

Meanwhile, Smith, Smiles and the Knights coaching staff met yesterday to discuss a replacement for Seu Seu, who was sacked last week.

Quigley is one of the players the Knights are considering signing as a back-up to Buderus.

That would probably my team to... I personally think its alot more exciting but then again far less experienced which is probably more important to get a good start to the year... Doesnt matter any team that runs out onto the field (as long as I dont see a Carmont or a Tanner named in the squad) I'll cheer it till my throat runs dry!!!!:)

That thought has often brought a tear to my eye.. I was watching George play for Wigan on the weekend and one instance he tried to draw his winger in only to put it over the sidelines.. memories of him and Quinn.

I think it's a good idea. I think we can all agree that Walshy just wasn't up to scratch last season in some areas, and while playing in the ESL isn't on a par with the NRL, it should give him a better arena to sharpen his skills than the NYC will. He'll get to pay in big games and against some world class players, and will also get some practice in marshalling a team.

I love it how we don't have any weak links anymore. Sure some of ours players aren't stand outs but they're now all at least solid players. That really is a nice feeling.

Im pretty sure Gower had a clause in his Panthers contract that said he can't play for another NRL club. I may be wrong but im pretty sure.

He picked Houston over Patto because Houston does more work, I think Patto of the bench is the good move he can add something when he comes on.

Just on NBN news that the NRL wont allow Walsh to have two contracts, so he wont be going anywhere soon unless he leaves the club.

Thats a real shame. Poor blokes got an opportunity of a lifetime and a stupid admin rule, that applies to some and not others is going to old him back. I hope they find some way around it.
