War Movie Buffs

I think there's too much of Scott in True Romance to call it a Tarantino film (but if it is it's top 3 for me, having my cake and eating it to).
Scott definitely put his imprint on it but the story and especially the dialogue is unmistakably Tarantino.

Some of the best war movies I've seen -

  • The Guns of Navarone (1961)
  • Midway (1976)
  • Patton (1969)
  • Battle of the Bulge (1965)
  • The Dam Busters (1955)
  • Battle of Britain (1969)
  • Heroes of Telemark (1965)
  • Where Eagles Dare (1968)
  • The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
  • Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
  • Enemy at the Gates (2001)
  • Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
  • Zulu (1964)
  • Operation Crossbow (1965)
  • Battle of the River Plate (1956)
  • Sink the Bismarck! (1960).
This really opens my eyes to what has been made over such a long time span. Thanks for the list. Some I have never seen and others it has been years.
Thank you.

A very solid list there Cap. I can recommend one that should also be added, a great WW2 film called When Trumpets Fade(1998). A little harder to find but well worth the effort to track down.

Yeah that's a great movie.

One of the only ones based on America's disastrous campaign in the Hurtgen Forest where US soldiers were just slaughtered against well built German defences. It really was like WW1 and the officers depicted as not giving a shit about casualties symbolised the US high command.

No one knows anything about it because the Battle of the Bulge happened straight after it.

Thanks to both. It goes to show just how good Band of Brothers was when it depicted The Bulge, as it was not pleasant even in victory. I am just starting to read about Hurtgen Forest. A lot of weapons get plenty of coverage that were used during WW2 by the German’s, but those 88 mm guns did massive carnage whether as an anti air craft gun or against ground forces.

Watching the television series Life and Fate on Amazon Prime. Its based in the Battle of Stalingrad and focuses on life under Stalin.

The book was banned by the kgb.

First episode was excellent.

I remember when I first watched this movie, I found the characters really unlikeable especially the main guy. I was used to the Hollywood versions.

But when you read about the meat grinder of Hurtgen that was the reality and that the US soldiers weren't Rambos. It became one of my favourite movies.

Yep Hurtgen is famous for having the only US soldier executed for desertion since the civil war. Eisenhower approved poor ol Eddie Sloviks death sentence to set an example to others who were deserting.

Yeah, the main guy is Ron Eldard. He was also in the US version of Men Behaving Badly.

The only one of those I've never seen is Operation Crossbow. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere.

The Bridge on the River Kwai was always a favourite of mine, but I find I dont enjoy it as much since I found out how damaging the portrayal of Lt Col Nicholson was to Lt Col Philip Toosey (who the character was based on) & his family.

@Mr Spock! thanks for posting the youtube of When Trumpets Fade. I'll give it a watch later.

Another more obscure movie worth a watch is 84 C Mopic. I remember seeing it around 1990 when it first came to video. I tried to find a copy recently as I wanted to rewatch it. The only place I could find it was YouTube. I'd say it's one of the more realistic portrayals of Vietnam.

Operation Crossbow is a fictionalised account of the real life Operation Crossbow in WW2 which was the Allied operation to stop the production of the German vengance weapons (i.e. the V1 and the V2). It was made by MGM. If you have Foxtel, it will roll around occasionally on Fox Classics.

The Railway Man is a great movie. I have no idea why it never received much attention or acclaim https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2058107/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

For something straight after WW2 - The Best Years of Our Lives . This one won best picture. Still as relevant today https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036868/

Jo Jo Rabbit
Das Boot
The Hill
Crimson Tide

This is fantastic . WW1 footage restored and colourised by Peter Jackson They Shall Not Grow Old https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7905466/?ref_=adv_li_tt

Honourable mention to 70s series Combat! and Spyforce. Spyforce was still being shown late on one channel.

Combat! would be great on a streaming platform.

Watched Kelly’s Heroes the other night for the first time in quite a while. Really take my hat off to the production with so much combat action. No CGI, just real explosions, tanks and very skilled stunt work.

Oddball (Donald Sutherland) is one of the greatest characters in movie history. "Älways with the negative waves Moriarty"
