Warriors ISP Cup 2017

Ken's "nothing wrong" is largely because he's not being targetted. As I said elsewhere he's always a game off getting horribly exposed, and he also does nothing in attack.

Hes kept Manu out and now keeping Tui, and Allwood out

Hes doing everything asked of him, which is more than 1/2 the team can say

"keeping players out" isn't a positive. Anyway Manu has been injured, hes hardly been kept out.

As for "doing whats asked of him" I ask wingers to score tries. 2 in 20+ games doesn't cut it. He tries, but he isn't a winger, plain as day. He's not a back full-stop. No pace, no footwork, no positional nous, no finishing ability, no aerial ability, no hands. All he can do is run straight and hard, he needs to put on another 5kg and move to the front row.

One thing I will say about Ken. He's been a rippin and a tearin. Can't score them but I admire his attitude.

Thats why I'm saying move him to the forwards. I like his attitude and physicality, its just plain as day that he's no winger. He's Tongan, surely he wont need much encouragement to hit the KFC and lift heavy and fill out into a monster forward, where he'd potentially have the perfect attributes. As it is we're hiding a prop on the wing and sacrificing any finishing for the sake of 150m a game of hit-ups while hoping an opposition team doesnt ruthless target him, which WILL happen.

Sounds like you're describing Manu.

Sounds like you're describing Manu.

Except Manu actually has some legitimate winger's attributes. He's an awesome finisher, he's good in the air on attack, and has some pace and footwork. Those things balanced his shortcomings (suspect hands and the usual big man's vulnerabilities to being turned on defense). What positive attributes balance Ken's weaknesses? Hit ups alone don't cut it. If that's all he brings, he's a forward.

Good performance from Satae off the bench last week.

40 mins 18 tackles 132 metres

Ogden - 80 mins 19 tackles 119 metres

Got a good crop of young forwards developing. Hopefully a few of them can kick on and offer some competition to first grade.

Another grinding workout delivered the Vodafone Warriors their sixth consecutive win in the Intrust Super Premiership at Mount Smart Stadium today.

Ahead just 10-8 at halftime, the Vodafone Warriors scored three second half tries to earn a 24-20 victory over a Newtown side boasting significant NRL experience.

The Jets included Tony Williams, Sam Tagataese and Joseph Paulo in their starting pack with Manaia Cherrington on the bench and former Canberra Raider Edrick Lee at fullback.

This wouldn't be an easy passage for the Vodafone Warriors as they went about protecting their position on top of the points table.

Since blanking Wests Tigers 36-0 in round three, they've been extended to sustain their run of form beating Illawarra 21-14 and Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 26-14 in the fourth and fifth rounds.

The Jets were on the board first today through centre Jordan Drew before Vodafone Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad had the first leg of his first half double to level it up at 4-4 after 23 minutes.

Seven minutes later Drew had a brace but the 8-4 lead was short-lived as the Vodafone Warriors struck in the 37th minute with a well-worked try from near halfway.

From the left side of the field, the ball was swung right, Ata Hingano linking with Mason Lino. The halfback dummied, broke clear - as he so often does - with support on either side. He opted inside sending Nicoll-Klokstad away for his second try and converting for a 10-8 halftime lead.

The Vodafone Warriors lifted their intensity and accuracy in the opening minutes of the second half, rolling through their sets effectively to earn good field position. The forwards were beginning to impose themselves.

They were rewarded in the 51st minute when hooker Jazz Tevaga jumped out of dummy half, feeding the human bulldozer Daniel Palavi who hit and spun out of tackles to get the ball down. With Lino's conversion, the Vodafone Warriors had a valuable 16-8 lead.

It was cut to 16-14 soon after when Jets second rower Jayden Walker was awarded a try after appearing to lose the ball in-goal.

Just as quickly the Vodafone Warriors reasserted themselves with prop Albert Vete thundering over off a short ball. Lino couldn't convert from a handy angle but the home side was 20-14 ahead.

The lead stretched to 10 points when a muscular Pat Sipley charge created room, the ball shifted to the left for second rower Ofa Ogden to go over in the 72nd minute.

There was a late scare when Tagataese scored in the 78th minute but ultimately the clock was the Vodafone Warriors' friend.

Match details | Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland

Vodafone Warriors 24 (Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2, Daniel Palavi, Albert Vete, Ofa Ogden tries; Mason Lino 2 conversions).

Newtown Jets 20 (Jordan Drew 2, Jayden Walker, Sam Tagataese tries; Fa'amanu Brown 2 conversions).

Halftime: 10-8 Vodafone Warriors.

Great try by Lino.
Tof Sipley looks a monster. Bunty very good.
Vete had a lazy first half but a better second half.
Pat Sipley and Satae good.
N-K played well.
Tui totally lazy, not getting involved and won't pass. Henry moved him from wing to 6 with 20 to go just to get him involved, all he did was run from dummy half.

Did some NSW cup stat trawling (rounds 1-5)... turns out the standout middle forward (aside from Pat Sipley and James Gavet) is a guy we haven't really been talking about - Daniel Palavi. Everyone else has been good but with worrying error/penalty concession rates and/or effective tackle rates.

He's-
Equal best (with Gavet) for post contract metres per run
Equal best (with Pat Sipley) for support and decoy runs per minute
Equal best (with both Sipleys) for effective tackle rate
Best outright for tackle breaks
Third (after Gavet and Satae) for metres/run
Best outright for workrate per minute
Equal second (with T.Sipley, after Satae) for tries, linebreaks and assists and
Equal second (with Gavet, after P.Sipley) for least errors/penalties conceded

And at 34 minutes per game, he's not getting a huge artificial boost to his workrate numbers. He and Pat Sipley also seem to be 'Kearney' type players too... low offloads (and low errors/penalties) - but with the ability to break tackles, which is key for that to work.

Yeah. He's not spectacular but playing good team football.
I guess that's why the team is going well.
