Oddly the article has zero reference to the "Injury hit" part of the headline. Who got/was injured?

Gelling did his ankle again in the first half, JTS went down in the second half... seemed like fairly early on, I don't remember exactly.

Junior Pauga is in line to make his first appearance for the Vodafone Warriors Intrust Super Premiership this year after being named for Saturday's clash with table-topping Mounties at Mt Smart Stadium.

Pauga, who suffered an ACL injury during last year's ISP finals series, will start in the centres while Ligi Sao (Samoa) and King Vuniyayawa (Fiji) have also been named to play after making their respective representative debuts last weekend.

The Vodafone Warriors will head into the match in fifth place on the ISP ladder.

Vodafone Warriors stop competition leaders
Brilliant sunshine greeted both the visitors and fifth-placed home side at Mt Smart Stadium, a place the Warriors hadn't played at in six weeks when they lost 11-0 to Wests.

The Warriors welcomed back the influential Chanel Harris-Tavita, who missed their scratchy win over cellar-dwellers Newcastle with injury. Blake Ayshford filled the void of Anthony Gelling, who turned out for the Warriors' NRL outfit in Round 16.

Meanwhile, Mounties were missing their prolific winger Mikaele Ravalawa, who has scored 11 tries this season.

Both sides kept it tight off the kick-off, however it was the Warriors who got the first real chance after seven minutes when some dominant defence forced a line drop out from Mounties. Although Joseph Vuna got close off the ensuing set, they ultimately couldn't make it count.

Mounties then marched straight down the field and won a penalty on the Warriors' goal line, which resulted in a simple try under the posts to prop Royce Hunt. Sitiveni Moceidreke converted and instead of resting on their laurels, Mounties made the Warriors pay for slack discipline again.

A sweeping set from the kick-off saw Sam Williams get some great front-foot ball, allowing him to pop a beautiful kick over the defensive line for former Warrior Omar Slaimankhel to grab and score in the corner.

After that one-two punch combo, the Warriors picked themselves off the canvas to score next with a very slick try to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad. Mounties gifted the Warriors two penalties in a row, which meant that Mason Lino and Ayshford could combine to send their winger over by the right-hand corner flag.

Harris-Tavita's deadly boot saw the Warriors cut the deficit to four after 25 minutes.

By now the momentum was firmly with the home side, and a Mounties handling error gave them another shot at the line. This time Ayshford did it himself, running a perfect line off a Lino pass to score 10 metres in from touch on the same side.

Harris-Tavita suffered a nasty high shot five minutes before halftime. It knocked the five eighth out of the game and off to the dentist, and robbed the Warriors of their first-choice goal kicker.

It didn't stop them from coming out firing after halftime, with Karl Lawton scoring from close range in the 46th minute. They then extended the lead to 14 after Nicoll-Klokstad swooped on an errant Mounties pass, picking up the ball and galloping 70 metres to score under the posts.

Mounties were far from done though, and exploited some space on the right edge to send Jordan Martin over. Although he ran the try around close to the posts, Moceidreke clanked the conversion off the upright.

The 24-14 scoreline set up a tense final 20 minutes, but both sides took turns bombing opportunities at either end. The pressure was on Mounties to cook something up on attack, and again it was the boot of Williams that paid dividends. His kick along the deck bounced into Slaimankhel's hands again, and then he relieved Moceidreke of the goal kicking duties to make it a four-point game with three minutes to go.

Off the kick-off, a huge run by Ed Murphy moved Mounties into the Warriors' red zone, however they couldn't convert this last chance into points. The Warriors ran out the clock for a very tough win at home, and valuable competition points.

The Warriors move over the Auckland Harbour Bridge next weekend, when they host Wentworthville at QBE Stadium on the North Shore. Mounties will be looking to get back on track at Belmore where they take on the Bulldogs.

WARRIORS 24 (C Nicoll-Klokstad 2 B Ayshford K Lawton tries Harris-Tavita 2 M Lino 2 goals) bt MOUNTIES 20 (O Slaimankhel 2 R Hunt J Martin tries S Moceidreke S Williams goals)

A fourth straight win is on offer for the Vodafone Warriors when they host Wentworthville in their 17th-round Intrust Super Premiership clash at QBE North Harbour Stadium on Saturday (1.00pm kick-off).

Their impressive 24-20 victory over the competition-leading Mounties last week has them sharing third spot on 20 points (fifth on points for and against), just three behind new leader Penrith, with the Mounties now second on 22 points.

The Vodafone Warriors have been on the charge over the last month.

Since their narrow 18-20 12th-round loss to the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles they’ve harvested eight points by beating Wentworthville 36-6 in Sydney, collecting two points from a bye in round 14 and then beating Newcastle 22-18 away as well as the Mounties last week.

The Magpies have had a wretched time this season, sitting 11th on the table above only Newcastle with a 5-10 record. They come to Auckland after losing 24-50 to Newtown last weekend.

Hunting their 10th win of the season, the Vodafone Warriors have had a gain and two losses on the selection merry-go-round. They’ve regained centre Anthony Gelling, who was on NRL duty against Cronulla last week, but their best forward against the Mounties – Ligi Sao – has been called into the NRL side this week and Jospeh Vuna is listed as 18th man (not named in the ISP squad). Pat Sipley replaces Sao in the front row.

Meanwhile, the Vodafone Junior Warriors resume their Jersey Flegg Cup campaign after a two-week break in the competition.

Their last outing against competition leader Newcastle wasn’t one to remember. In the early game at QBE North Harbour Stadium they face another side well up the ladder in the sixth-placed Parramatta Eels.

ISP and Jersey Flegg teams for 18th round
Richard Becht & Photosport.nz
2-3 minutes
The Penrith Panthers will pose a stern challenge for the Vodafone Warriors in both the Intrust Super Premiership and Jersey Flegg Cup 18th-round matches at QBE North Harbour Stadium on Sunday.

The sixth-placed ISP side encounters a Penrith outfit sitting three points clear at the top of the table on a run of three straights wins.

And the Vodafone Junior Warriors, who lost 10-18 in a tough grind against the Eels last Saturday, face a Panthers team lying second two points off the pace.

The John Teina-coached ISP side let slip a good lead in going down 22-30 to Wentworthville last Saturday.

The Vodafone Warriors are showing some changes in their line-up named today with centre Anthony Gelling included on the NRL interchange along with second rower Joe Vuna. They’ve also lost Sam Lisone through suspension as well as exciting young interchange forward Tom Ale to injury.

With Lisone out, King Vuniyayawa is named in the front row and Jersey Flegg-eligible Preston Riki is selected in the second row. Coming into the centres for Gelling is former Vodafone Junior Warrior Francis Leger.

Vodafone Warriors edged out by Panthers

Penrith underlined their Intrust Super Premiership title credentials today in Auckland, with a hard-fought 14-10 win over the Warriors. The Panthers got the job done despite having to play an entire quarter of the match with only 12 players on the park.
The weather had been miserable in Auckland the night before and morning of the match, however the heavy rain had eased by the time kickoff rolled around. That was a relief to everyone in attendance, given that North Harbour Stadium was the scene of the almost biblical flood that occurred during the Warriors’ win over Newtown back in round eight.

The Warriors, firmly entrenched in the middle of the ladder, named a mostly unchanged team from the one that was upset by Wentworthville last weekend. Francis Leger came into the centres in place of Anthony Gelling, who was called up for the Warriors’ NRL match against Brisbane. Likewise, the Panthers kept a similar side to the one that defeated St George Illawarra in round 17.
The slippery conditions meant both sides made a tentative start, and it took until 12 minutes in for the first real chance to emerge.
It came directly from difficult handling conditions, with a spilled Mason Lino bomb meaning that the Warriors were awarded a scrum 10 metres out from the Panthers’ line. A well-worked move gave Junior Paunga some space to power his way past the Panthers’ left edge defence, scoring in the corner. They should have had a couple more tries shortly after, but Charnze Niccol-Klokstad was penalised for taking out a defender while collecting another bomb, then Pauga lost the ball in a tackle close to the line.
The first half turned into a tight arm wrestle after the resumption of play, with both side hammering away in the middle of the park and testing each other with low, raking kicks.
The Panthers finally got a sustained period of attack with seven minutes to go in the half, when a Warriors’ knock on gifted them a repeat set on the tryline. Billy Burns ran a beautiful line to run onto an Adam Keighran short ball, and took a couple of defenders with him to score next to the posts. Keighran converted to give the Panthers the lead.
However, the Panthers found themselves down to 12 men straight off the kickoff when Corey Waddell was sin binned for a professional foul. An ensuing penalty gave Mason Lino an easy shot to level the scores, and the sides headed into the sheds locked at 6-6.
The rain came back as the second half kicked off, and King Vuniyayawa found himself on report after the first set for a dangerous lifting tackle. It took another 10 minutes for a chance to materialise, after the Panthers marched down the field and allowed Dean Blore to kick along the deck. The ball bounced off a couple of Warriors defenders and Blore swooped to score as it crossed the line.
The Panthers were once again reduced to 12 men when Mitchell Kenny was binned in the 56th minute. It didn’t take long for the Warriors to cash in, as Charnze Niccol-Klokstad stepped his way to score inside the corner post after a Lino cross kick. Lino couldn’t convert, but the 12-10 scoreline set up a tense final quarter.
Unfortunately, the handling errors were flowing like the rain now sweeping the field. Both sides were guilty of turning the ball over early in their sets, and play was confined to the middle of the park. The Panthers looked to have cracked with seven minutes remaining, dropping the ball to gift the Warriors 10 metres out from their line, but the home side couldn’t cash in.
From there the Panthers kept their nerve and won a crucial penalty close to the Warriors’ line. Keighran stepped up to slot the two points, but more importantly chew up almost all the remaining time on the clock.
The win keeps the Panthers at the top of the Intrust Super Premiership, they now sit on 27 points, three clear of second-placed Mounties. They should maintain that lead next weekend when they visit last-placed Newcastle. The Warriors are now in desperate need of a win, and will try and achieve that when they host Wyong back at Mt Smart Stadium.

Two guys I can see making it to the NRL hopefully with the Warriors are Wesley Veikoso and Preston Riki. Wesley is built like a tank and plays like Fuifui Moimoi. Preston is a very big boy, Vince Mellers like and a bloody handful to deal with. Along with superstar in the making Tom Ale the warriors have some star quality prospects in the forwards coming through.

Pulu making return with ISP side on Sunday
Back rower Leivaha Pulu makes his much-awaited return from a long injury lay-off when he starts for the Vodafone Warriors in their 19th-round Intrust Super Premiership clash against the Wyong Roos at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday (1.45pm kick-off).

Pulu appeared in each of the Vodafone Warriors’ five season-opening wins over South Sydney, Gold Coast, Canberra, the Sydney Roosters and North Queensland before being forced off the field with a foot injury 23 minutes into the sixth-round home clash against Brisbane.

He has been tasked with making his way back through the ISP before pushing his claims to regain a spot in the NRL squad. Pulu was originally targeted to return in round 20.

The Vodafone Warriors, coming off a tough 10-14 loss to competition leader Penrith, have also been boosted by the return of front rowers Sam Lisone and Ligi Sao plus centre Anthony Gelling; Lisone is back after serving a one-game suspension while Sao and Gelling were with the NRL side in Brisbane last weekend.

The seventh-placed Vodafone Warriors are one of two teams on 20 points, only two behind three teams on 22 points filling third, fourth and fifth.

Wyong is two points back in ninth spot on 18 points.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors face the Sydney Roosters in the Jersey Flegg Cup on Sunday (11.45am kick-off).

After a number of tight losses this season, they pulled off their most significant win of the campaign in holding off the highly-ranked Panthers 14-12 last Sunday.

Pulu is back! If his form s back to what is was pre injury, he should return to 1st grade ASAP.
Had a good laugh listening to him talk about this weeks game....he will be playing against his old team mates...he was outrageous ' I'm gonna put in late shots...elbows....knees...."

He sounds really happy to be back and it was all over the top tongue in cheek talk about putting cheap shots on his mates.

Really looking forward to seeing him back....it fascinates me that his recovery has been so on point time frame wise.

Felt like he was a big loss for us when he got injured. Was offering a lot of penetration on that left hand side. I'm hoping Kearney sticks with him on that edge next year rather than moving him to the middle.

Absolutely.
People get too fixated on that right edge.

I always judge the Warriors potency by what they can do on both edges - their best ever side was built that way (2002) with strike on both sides of the park.

The Warriors tend to lurch from being right hand dominant to left (Manu era it was over stacked to the left while the right withered and spluttered).

I'm not overly interested in the right because when you have Shaun Johnon, Tohu Harris, Peta Hiku, and David Fusitua you are going to score lots of trys...so what....nothing to learn here....

The purchase of Blake Green opened possibility for balance in this team.

Pulu is the type of forward that suits Greens game management.

Papalii as an example is very promising there, but (without being picky) you see last week where he 'almost' makes the try line where a bigger, more importantly better timed experience guy will hit that service lane a second earlier, not need to pause to catch the ball...and blow through the line.

Kata not passing on that side is hampering the balance of the team but that's a whole other conversation, he is very good in other areas...but when Pulu is back...the Warriors will start to string more wins in sequence....having a threatening left makes that right many times more dangerous.

Roos clear away from Vodafone Warriors

The Wyong Roos have stormed into the top-eight of the competition ladder with a resounding 30-6 victory over the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Two tries to Josh Curran inspired the victory with both of his four-pointers courtesy of some classy touches from five-eighth Sean O'Sullivan, while Sitili Tupouniua and Frank-Paul Nuuausala lead from the front with some defiant efforts on either side of the ball.

Their valiant defence in the second-half galvanised the Roos to an impressive victory away from home - recording their sixth win from eight matches to well and truly keep their finals hopes alive.

Both sides struggled to capitalise early in the contest with ill-discipline ruining their respective chances, but a Reece Robinson intercept from his own try-line threatened to break the deadlock only for the desperate Warriors defence chasing him down.

Although their chances were few and far between throughout the opening 20 minutes, the Roos eventually drew first blood when Curran stormed onto a perfectly timed pass from O'Sullivan to barge his way over from close-range.

Another try beckoned when Tupouniua steamrolled his way through some flimsy Warriors defence on the ensuing set, only for his offload to hit the deck in a lucky escape for the home side.

The Roos extended their lead in the 35th minute after a Mitch Cornish kick ricocheted off two Warriors defenders before Paul Momirovski pounced on the loose ball for their second unanswered try.

Cornish converted from out wide as the Roos took a healthy 12-0 advantage into half-time.

O'Sullivan and Curran combined again after the back-rower latched onto a pin-point grubber for his second try of the game just five minutes after the break.

A powerful surge from King Vuniyayawa ignited the Warriors in the 55th minute with his try giving his side a glimmer of hope, but a barnstorming carry from Frank-Paul Nuuausala just moments later gave the Roos a quick reprieve.

Wyong's resilience was tested countless times in the latter stages of the second-half as the Warriors continued to threaten their goal-line defence, but a remarkable try-saving tackle from Tupouniua typified the committed efforts of his side.

A late penalty-goal from O'Sullivan eliminated any chance of a potential comeback from the Warriors, before Tupouniua earned a well-deserved try after he burst onto another timely pass from the dynamic No.6 to ice a crucial victory for Rip Taylor's men.

ISP and Jersey Flegg teams for 20th round
Richard Becht & Photosport.nz

The Vodafone Warriors will be seeking to snap a run of three straight losses when they take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Sunday’s 20th-round Intrust Super Premiership match at Belmore Sports Ground in Sydney (1.00pm kick-off local time; 3.00pm NZT).

When they beat the Mounties 24-20 on June 30, they were pushing for a top four spot but losses since then to Wentworthville, Penrith and Wyong have seen them slip to eighth spot, level with Wyong on 20 points but with a superior points for and against record.

The Bulldogs are only two points ahead alongside Wests Tigers on 22 points so Sunday’s encounter in Sydney could be pivotal in terms for the race for the finals.

Experienced halfback Mason Lino has been named to start in the halves with Chanel Harris-Tavita while the side also welcomes back big prop Chris Satae, who has been on the bench for the club’s NRL team in its last seven outings. He’ll have the chance to get in some bigger minutes.

While the Vodafone Warriors are looking for a form reversal the Vodafone Junior Warriors are bidding to extend a form revival when they take on the Bulldogs in the Jersey Flegg Cup.

They’re coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season after beating second-placed Penrith 14-12 and the fifth-placed Sydney Roosters 22-14 in the last two rounds.

The results have moved them to 16 points, still sitting 10th four points behind the eighth-placed Bulldogs.

They’ll use a line-up showing a number of changes including a reappearance in the under-20 grade for wing Lewis Soosemea, who has spent the season playing up in the ISP.

ISP and Jersey Flegg teams named for 22nd round
The Vodafone Warriors are determined to put a lean spell behind them when they tackle the bottom-placed Newcastle Knights in Saturday’s 22nd-round Intrust Super Premiership match at Mount Smart Stadium (3.00pm kick-off).

They took a run of four straight losses into their bye last weekend and now sit seventh on the table on 22 points, level with Wyong but ahead on points for and against.

The Vodafone Warriors are precariously poised, though, just a point clear of the ninth-placed Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles and two ahead of the North Sydney Bears in 10th place.

On the other hand, they’re still just four points behind the Mounites (second) and St George Illawarra (third) and only two back from three teams on 24 in Newtown, Canterbury-Bankstown and Wests Tigers.

The Vodafone Warriors are showing few changes from their last start against the Bulldogs as they set about securing their 10th win of the season.

In the early game at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday, the Vodafone Junior Warriors take on competition-leading Newcastle (1.00pm).

The Vodafone Junior Warriors will be desperate to compete all the way against the Knights after suffering their heaviest defeat of the season in their away clash in round 15 in Cessnock.
