Warriors release Johnson

A lot of people are unable to accept the possibility that Shaun Johnson could go to the Sydney Roosters in 2020. That is because they cannot face the prospect of the Sydney Roosters being top dog in the NRL for the next several years.

We still have to wait and see if Johnson goes to Cronulla for one year or four years. If the former it is because the Roosters have an agreement with him for 2020 onwards.

True. But no contract on offer and telling a bloke to explore his options makes it pretty clear don't ya think?

No because its happened many times before where clubs say "Go find out what you're worth on the open market and get back to us."

Just as players decide to wait and test themselves on the open market, just as SJ did the last time he was off contract.

At no point did they say they weren't going to offer him a contract. The original quote was that "no contract had been tabled yet and as its passed nov 1st he's free to explore his options"

Fair enough. I think how publicly that Cameron bloke was letting it unfold was writing on the wall for Shaun.

I have a feeling that a stand off was brewing anyway, the media blow up just escalated things to another level. After that it probably became unteniable, but more because the Warriors weren't willing to offer him what he wanted rather than no offer forthcoming at all.

The way we lost to the Panthers in the finals I think was what started this whole thing rolling. They just weren't convinced he could deliver on what they were already paying him let alone more.

Losing him for 2019 though was definitely not part of the plan.

The Warriors scored off two plays early. Johnson was heavily involved with both.

From there Mannering and Blair combine to be lazy and are gassed by DWZ, Luke kicks out on the full, Kata makes three first half errors, RTS goes off injures, and from Katas errors the Warriors don’t see the ball for 20 minutes.

Yet that’s all Johnson’s fault and yet I don’t even recall Blake Green playing frankly.

I agree in part that he never consistently delivered on his potential so I can see why they didn’t think he’s a million dollar man. But the timing of Cameron George’s comments on Radiosport while Shaun was in England and the general rhetoric and tone thereafter imo simply was disrespectful to a player of his experience. Perhaps they would never have bargained him down but the mob like hustler mentality they displayed throughout appeared poorly thought out and executed. Very similar in some ways to the way Ali Lauitiiti was forced out.

Everything is was and always has been Shaun’s fault. Even when it wasn’t. I look forward to him getting space behind for once a good set of forwards. I’m sure he can dominate.

I'm a big SJ fan and will continue to be, but I think this isn't a situation where we can solely blame one side.

Was it SJ's fault we lost against Penrith? Ofcourse not. Did he have a proper dig and show why he's a million dollar elite player? Also no.

He's shown time and time again to be quite a petulant person...the Fitler comments and the 'youse got your way' comments highlighting this. Even though I do believe the Warriors handled this poorly, speaking to media when SJ was over seas etc., that doesn't justify his 'grant me a release or I don't put in' conversation.

Who started the whole drama? Who was worse?
These questions don't really matter imo, I think it's a shame how everything went down, but I think we can all see that both parties appear to be better off parting ways.

I hope SJ smashes it in the future and his game lifts to another level. He's one of the best players to watch on his day.

I also hope the Warriors' new hardline approach produces results and we continue to move upwards from here. There is life after SJ

Couldnt agree more. I've been a Johnson critic in the past but I've also been one of his biggest fans. Hes rarely had the platform to be able to perform to his potential, but when he has, hes almost the best footballer on the planet, or at least the most dangerous. Give him that Sharks pack or the Roosters and I'm sure he'll be a helluva lot more consistent.

It's not. Telling him they wouldn't be offering a contract beyond 2019 is clearly stating he's not in their plans. To think he'd negotiate a lesser contract at 28 is not naive, it's either tactical or downright clueless to think he wouldn't pull the pin for them.
SJ was quoted in the media when he signed his last contract he may need to take less money to improve the Warriors squad.
$1m p/year SJ clearly wasn't in the Warriors plans.

I’d take Shaun Johnson and Cameron Smith since they’re both not under contract. Applying the Roosters salary cap approach means that McGuire’s money should cover it!

Yeah well your assclown club know how to do it.......
