Jye Gray is a gun half but he's getting picked at fullback and he's killing it from there. But if they keep him there, they will stunt his development as a half just like they did to Taaffe. I hope they debut Gray in the #14 and let him find his feet in first grade filling in here and there. He's a five-eighth but I wonder how he'd go in the #7. We better not let anyone poach him from under our noses. He is most definitely the future along with Fletcher, Munro, Mellars, Mamo and a few others.
I hope we don't make the same mistake me made with Blake Taafe, and make him play a position he is not really suited to. I wanna see Gray come in and play with Cody in the halves, move Wighton to FB, and move Mitchell to C

I'd love that but they've been playing Gray at FB all year and he's had no prep in the halves to date. Also, going into the halves merry-go-round hot seat at the moment might be throwing him to the wolves at this stage with the coach about to be nixed. I think we need our experienced rep players steering the ship at the minute so I'd rather Wighton into the halves with Cody and Gray can get blooded playing off the back of them from FB to start with so there's less pressure on him at least while Latrell is out and even after he returns. But down the track, throw him the 6 jersey. Cody is slowing down so I see him as our fix at 7 now.

p.s. Even at fullback, he's already better than Taaffe. And I had high hopes for Taaffe in the halves.

Great logic

I'm not worried about what happens after Wayne. That's the mistake we made last time. He could coach for another 5 years for all we know. I'm happy for him to do the same as before and get us to more Grand Finals. Wayne has never lost a dressing room in all his years as a coach. If there is a next time, we should find our own replacement when he's finally done and not have one of his assistants follow in his footsteps. That's how you stop the Wayne "curse".
Correct. If Bennett rejoins then the CLUB has to select his successor. That abrogates any problems with "Bennett succession", that have occurred everywhere else he coached.

Maguire too could be a good choice. He has front, charisma will get aggressive forward play and have harsh words for those bigger egos underperforming. Some will leave and rightly so. Find younger, hungry players.
I understand Maguire's end here was poor however he seems a much more refined coach now and he will get the squad playing with ferocity.
I note with interest how one P. Rothfield argued that Murray was not a Captain. I argued same months ago and you goons mocked my comment!! He simply does not have the character and really he is still like a schoolboy: no presence and no charisma. But the NRL is a rough and tough league, aggressive and fast moving, no place for niceties. Murray needs to develop a nasty edge, get in people's faces, become shrewd and scheming. That's what a leader does.

The choice with Taaffe is totally on Demetriou. That was his decision even factoring in Bennett too played him there.
We argued here for months mid-season last year to select Taaffe at #7. That's where he will end up and be quite a threat there. Canterbury have imported a good young player and he will only get stronger with more experience.

Yeah its very concerning. Looks like JD has lost the locker room. Might be time for a cleanout and suffer the next couple of years.
He in fact lost the dressing room 8 months. Dummies here kept telling moi to "stop smoking" or words to that effect. Repeatedly! Empirically, I have never smoked anything and I only consume a small beer here or there infrequently. But I do know football and body language and I understand what signs show themselves ouvertly when a squad has effectively quit on the Coach.

I like JD and hope he finds a way to get this team stacked with stars but also with major issues going. So far, not so good. We have a tough draw looking ahead and some are talking about us being 1-7 after the first 8 games on top of the fade out last year.

I know they've recently upgraded his contract (why the rush I don't know - was he about to be poached?) but that doesn't guarantee a head coach's job. Only winning and making finals does at a big club like Souths.

Yes, we're only two games into the new season and it's way too early for a thread like this BUT, IF we crash and burn again, do we look at Wayne for another stint to resurrect things and get belief back in the joint? Or do we go for a next-gen up and coming coach of which none come to mind at the minute?

They've been saying Wayne only has a year or two left in him for over 10 years now and he just keeps on going. I wish he stayed and we didn't put a limit on his term at Souths the first time but if he came back, just make it two years and then see how things are going after that rather than already deciding well before that time arrives.

I'm sure I'll cop flak in this thread but I don't mind. What do other people think we should or could do if we need to?
Really what is there to "like" about Demetriou?
4-13 in his last 17 starts with a team conceeding over 30ppg in at least 9 of those contests and further he has not really developed any young talent. Having Campbell G go under the knife at the START of the season rather than the OFF SEASON was an imbecile error. Do not forget Campbell G has been one of our BEST for the past two seasons and he is not there!! Bellamy has always wanted to get Graham to Melbourne he simply loves the guy!
Both Graham and Munroe started the season anavailable. That is a lot of speed and youth gone from an ailing backline and its largely on Demetriou!!
JD has missed the playoffs now for two successive seasons, got rid of Sam B, totally mismanaged the key players mid-season and from what I understand imported ex-AFL trainers to run conditioning and practice sessions. That too has backfired: the squad looks knackered every game after 20 minutes.
In short he has temporarily destroyed a high powered, potent team.

Wayne Bennett isnt the answer. I dont think we should be considering sacking JD until the seasons over otherwise we're writing off 2024 and its way too early for that.
Man are you blind? Aveugle?
Even James Graham stated it openly on Monday's NRL 360: you CAN see the players have quit ON THE COACH!!!
The squad is tailed off and physically gasping every game on the field. 4-13 will quickly become 6-24 or the like. That is the current trajectory and you want to KEEP that? Remember too all squads who finish tailed off take several years to recover and some take a decade. Just ask Balmain & St George fans!!

I meant I like him as a bloke from what I've seen and therefore I wish him well and would love to see him succeed even though it's not happening.

It's 5 wins from last 20 game's I believe
From leading the competition
To missing Top 8 . 2023. Something happened from inside the playing group ?
We need the pride of the league back 😁

If JD gets the sack midseason, I'd give Dean Pay the job in an interim role for the remainder of the season. Might not be the best coach out there but he was able to get terrible Canterbury teams to put in for him and i believe is a strong enough character that he won't tip toe around anyone in the squad.
