Wayne Bennett quitting the Knights

Bennett once said coaching was not about the money, yet as soon as the Tinkler gravy train came to a halt, off he jumps.

It's getting easier and easier to see through Wayne's spin.

Chook.

Knights and Sharks...who else?

Canberra? Their recruitment brought in less than the local lamington drive down at the church. On top of that they had guys renege on deals as well as had others reject bigger dollars to stay at other clubs. This all played out in very embarrassing fashion courtesy of the ever supportive media.

Can't understand why he would go back to Dragons, he left them for a reason.

I would like him at the gold coast for the games sake, he would really give that club an identity and reinvigorate the fan base. Doubt they could afford him though.

A return to Brisbane would be a bit of a fairy-tale ending for him, not so sure it would be good for the club long term though. Maybe in a coaching director capacity.

.

He probably left us because he didn't want to endure the rebuilding years and the job of getting rid of Gaz, hornby, young, cooper, fien, weyman et al

Now he could come back with Dugan, Widdop, Beale, Runciman, Frizell, DeBelin, Stockwell, Rein, Quinlan as a core young group ready to contend in the next few years

But like the Broncos it's still a case of been there done that, minus the nostalgia. But who really knows with Benny.

So he takes responsibility for f**king the club up than leaves instead of help fixing it?
Thanks supercoach.

Bennett runs as soon as he sees trouble on the horizon. He got out of Brisbane the moment he could see their golden years of brilliant players had ended, and he ran from Saints the moment the job was done and he knew the only way was down with the aging roster they had. Things turned to shit at the Knights so quickly (within the space of half a season) he couldn't get out before the shit hit the fan. He's never had to rebuild a club from the bottom before. He saw the prospect of doing that at Newcastle and it scared the shit outa him I reckon.

I certainly still think Bennett is a good coach, but after listening to his reason for leaving on MMM it's left a bad taste in my mouth. He pretty much said that he loved the club and the town and if the side was performing better he would have stayed on. How are the players supposed to feel listening to that? How are they supposed to get up for the rest of the season, especially Rise for Alex round when the coach has already thrown the towel in and pretty much said they're a lost cause that he doesn't know how to fix?

As a Knights member and fan, I'm looking at this as a blessing...

Bennett has underperformed as a coach at this club - for the first season you accept disruption and don't expect significant improvement until a coach puts the cattle, systems and structures in place that make it 'his' team. the second year saw us one game away from a Grand Final...although I'd be the first to admit we over achieved to get to that position based on what they delivered over the whole season.

But this year has been such a disappointment from a fans perspective - supposedly bennett's methods and ethos is to play a disciplined basic mistake free brand of football where players commit to playing for the man standing next to you. To achieve that I think you need a galvinised playing unit all working as one and if they aren't doing that you rely on the coach to step in and take players out that don't deliver on that commitment.

The flaw at the Knights (and any club he goes to) is that he isn't prepared to do that for his favourites - first and foremost Darius Boyd. Sitting at all the home games and watching him on and off the ball he has consistently been one of the the most negative influences on the Knights.

He is over paid and has been underperforming since he came to the club and Bennett has protected him every step of the way - if the rest of the team sees that sort of favouritism it is hard to deliver for a coach that has 2 sets of rules.

I look at a player like Gary Ablett for the Suns and see the sort of player that Boyd could be for a club but it requires heart and commitment and that is what Boyd lacks...

With Bennett going, the expectation that Boyd follows him will at least give me hope that the club can move forward next year, hopefully under someone like Rick Stone for mine

is Darius contracted at Knights til next year?

Not sure on his contract period but I think (and hope) Boyd has a get out clause if Bennett is no longer coaching the club...if that's the case -

Don't let the door hit you in the ar$e on the way out of the stadium Darius!

Ha.

It's funny how "supercoach" decides to call it quits when it starts getting tough. One last year to prove why he's such a good coach...and he quits. And now we have to sit back and watch him poach a number of talents from our U20's. I'd be happy to just retain Mamo, Tapine and Sione Mata'utia.

Now, let's get Stone back in with the resources he never had. Next best coach in the game.

One advantage if Stone picks up the gig is his involvement with the lower grades and potential influence on some of the talent coming through to stick with the club

For all his talk I have no doubt it is about the $'s for Wayne. i would be very surprised if he doesn;t have a equally lucrative deal lined up somewhere already. AZs soon as Tinkler stopped being able to afford his salary he would have been on the lookout.

As said the Titans would be a good place for him and the NRL, maybe Dave can chip in some $'s to get him up there for the good of the game.
