Wayne Bennett quitting the Knights

They were hardly a top 4 side last year, they were a fringe 8 side at best who won a couple lucky games in finals time, they come 7th with a 12W 11L record in regular season, very easily could have missed the 8, don't over talk his achievements, he done sweet f**k all at the Knights.

Exactly. They had 3 good weeks at the right end of the season, i said it at the time and i believe this year has proven it to be true, that 3 week run papered over A LOT of cracks in the squad

Stagger Lee is close to the money if he goes back to Broncos...I think he would be a Director of Coaching overseeing the coaches of NRL, Toyota Cup and feeder clubs.

As for Darius Boyd, he may have to finally cut that umbilical chord attached to Wayne, I think the Broncs wingers are doing a good job with plenty of years left in them while Fullback position is also covered with Barba ...Hoffman lurking around and Milford going there next year.

That's my guess for the Broncs but if he goes anywhere else it will be as head coach of a NRL side.

We overachieved last year
Everyone knows this
not saying I wasnt happy and if we had pulled off some kind of miracle win against the chooks that would have been something to be in the grand final
but last year our troubles playing the top 4 sides are very well known
but they dont seem to be remembered much here
only that we got to one game before the grand final.

I just dont want him poaching people
man so annoyed at some of the signings he made
waddell, dobson, Tahu, Newton
other older guys have been good, picking up the discards from other clubs has been good
but those four, so pointless. they arent even depth signings, theyre just rubbish

What's the status with Jake Mamo? Is he locked up tight, or is there wriggle room?

Id f**king love to see the Raiders throw a bit of money at him and try and snare him while there is a bit of uncertainity at the knights.
The fact that is known is that he is signed up for a few more years.

The rumour that is going around is that he has a get out clause. I'm sure you'll hear that about every single one of our players worth having over the next few months, so who knows how true it is.

It would be tragic for the Knights to lose any of Clydesdale, Mamo, Tapine or Sione Mata'utia. The last kick in the guts that we need from this season. It's a reasonable possibility, but I wouldn't think it would be to go to you blokes. You're almost as luckless as we are.

As for Bennett leaving, I'm mixed. I'm disappointed that my club couldn't adopt what he was trying to achieve. When we played to our potential, we were pretty good... but Bennett really just never seemed to fit Newcastle. Newcastle thrives on the underdog status, the blue-collar little guy sticking it to the big teams. We won 2 premierships on the back of this mentality - and we'll probably need to get back to that if we're ever to win another.

Fact: If the fat f**king bullshit artist had not have come in with an offer to entice Bennett away - with money he no longer has and a jet sitting in a f**king repo lot - he would have never have came to you.

And I was f**king correct.
Come back to Saints Wayne - where the cheques don't bounce and the players buy into what you're selling.

I think you may find that its the only part of the season that matters nick.
Overachieve or not, they got there and at least gave themselves a shot at it.

We started to get on the front foot. Finally got into their 20m zone and applied pressure. It's hard to imagine if the game would have went any other way, Bedsy was so bloody inspirational to the team, such a leader and I'm still guttered how his career ended; probably will be for a while to come. I don't think we would have won, but it wouldn't have been a blow out and I don't think the argument of "overachieving" would exist.

If there is anyone or anything preventing Bennett from returning to Brisbane, it's Boyd. There is just no place in the team for him. I would by no means be willing to drop Barba, Copley or Vidot to make room for him, especially after the sometimes gutless performances he put in at the Knights.

If Merge agree to take Boyd back, that's where Bennett will go too.

it's a lottery where he will end up, one thing about Bennett is if the media finds out where he is headed he tends to reneg

Im torn on where id like to see Bennett go...

Id love to see the Gold Coast win a premiership really dig into that support that theyve lost over the last few years, but since the Knights im not sure Bennett would go well with the Titans team.

lol, the Bennett haters are hilarious.

They go through his career with a fine tooth comb, to find anything they can put shit on him for. But you watch them cum in their pants the second he is linked to their club.

I've heard from a source that he apparently has this weird contract clause where he has this opening in like October/November where he's able to sign somewhere else but if he doesn't his contract kicks in and he's locked to the Knights for another 2 years. Not sure how true it is because it seems bizarre to me, but this was from the same bloke that told me Bennett would defiently be gone from the Knights so who knows. Either way he'll stay at the Knights (we have a fullback spot open now too) or go to wherever Bennett does. Can't see him going somewhere different all together.

I'm pretty sure none of the Knights juniors have actual get-out-clauses to do with Bennett though. So worst case scenario and everyone that can leaves we'll still at least have Mullen, the Sims boys, Clydesdale, Tapine, Uate, McManus and (cringe) Gidley to build from.

Judging by Jeremy Smith's interesting comments about Bennett's decision though I'm starting to wonder how many will actually be desperate to follow him...

The internet is a funny place... it's like you are either a nut hugger or a hater, to extreme ends of the spectrum

No one is "hating" on Bennett... the fact is coming from the Broncos and Dragons he had an aura about him that where ever he went, success would inevitably follow, because he's such an amazing coach

pointing out that isn't actually the case and suggesting his work at the Knights has not been impressive isnt hating on him, it's stating an opinion.

I like Bennett, i think he's a great coach, I dont think he's the super coach he was made out to be, and i do think he got a bit lucky in a "the right man at the right time" sense, but i am by no means saying he cant coach or that i wouldnt LOVE him at the Raiders.

I just hate the way the internet has to paint a objective opinion at extreme ends of the spectrum

Is it not possible to think:
a) Bennett is a great coach, albeit not a "supercoach"
b) his work with the knights has been poor

reasonable criticism of a man's body of work isnt hating on him.

Were we watching the same game? Up until Buderus was carted off, the Knights were in control of the game and had the Rorters on the backfoot.

Uhhmm, yes. I was watching a game where to that point the Knights had failed to score a try against one the best defensive teams in the history of the game. To state seemingly as a fact that Newcastle would have won the game if Buderus had stayed on is laughable.

Bennett is still a very good coach.

He may not be as good as he once was, or he may not have the cattle to work with that he once had. It is probably a bit of both.

As well, there were issues around payments from Tinkler and a few other issues that may have been a distraction for some players from Newcastle earlier in the year.

The idea that any coach is a "silver bullet" that can instantly run a club around,.... is not always right.

But, most of the stronger clubs in the comp would be better off sticking with their current coach.

There are 1 or 2 clubs where Bennett would be a definite improvement on the current coach.

There are a few more clubs where Bennett could help mentor a young coach in a less hands on role. But I don;t know if he would want to do that.

I actually think part of the problem is Newcastle just thought success it would inevitably happen.

I don't think anyone doubted Bennett was a great coach, but when he left Brisbane, there was still the question on whether he was just successful because of the roster that Broncos had boasted. He then went to St George Illawarra with instant success.

After that he was practically treated as a coaching god. So many (including myself) thought a premiership at Newcastle in the next 4 years was given. Unfortunately, I think the players did as well.

You could tell right from the get go, WB & the club just didn't click, & he probably underestimated what a challenge he was up against.
