Wayne Bennett quitting the Knights

Still Nutty

Attitude was never our problem this year. They (apart from maybe Boyd) showed up for every single game. The heads went down when things went wrong because they were down on confidence due to not winning a game in two freaking months. The general lack of confidence was obvious in both attack and defence.

Everything that could have gone wrong this year did, and yet they kept hanging in there and showing up to win every game until a couple of wins came. How is that not the right attitude?

It was Bennett that decided not to keep hanging in there. That's totally his choice but I don't think he'll win any admirers by publicly insinuating his players are a lost cause and he can't fix them...especially after what they've all been through this year.

Well said NoName...absolutely right about most of this year re effort and commitment and lack of luck for the Knights...certainly not saying they are a top 4 side but the position on the ladder belies some of the football they've played this year.

What surprises me is that Bennett's reputation is built on man management and yet he is basically saying he can't man manage this squad (that he has effectively hand picked) above where they are at now.

Whilst I respect Bennett and his past achievements, I'm not sure I would want that sort of coach heading to my team next?

The Broncos were set up to be a dynasty no matter who coached them.

See this point right here?

Yep, complete bullshit.

Bennett achieved his dynasty by making tough decisions that put his career at risk. Not many coaches would have pushed out a future immortal in favour of a bench utility but Bennett made that call and rightfully enjoyed the spoils for it.

He did it again in 1997.

Heck, even 2006 was won off the back of a few risks. Replacing the game's best fullback with a 17 year old kid with a stupid name and recruiting the game's most overrated player on a pittance.

Even before the Broncos, he proved himself to be a great coach in the BRL, which is why your club brought him in.

Don't let your hatred for Newcastle distort your vision of Bennett. The guy wasn't some 'right place, right time' coach, he had a lot to do with the success of each club he was apart of.

In this case, he also had a fair bit to do with their demise.

Well said. Even Saints were set up for a little dynasty between 04-06, but they didn't have the coach to execute it.

If Wayne got a rails run at Brisbane, why have they struggled since he left? And more so the longer it goes.

Not at all sad to see the back of him, but have grave concerns over how many of our players he'll raid away when he goes. If he wants to keep his personal favourites like Kurt, Darius, Waddell, and House - I'm all for it.

But the f**ker will probably take guys we sorely need to keep on deck.

Getting that Knights side to a preliminary final is one of the best coaching achievements ever.

Yes, this is the real worry. Not many Knights fans liked the boring and ineffective gameplan he tried to employ and so most are happy to see him gone. However, if he raids all the talent like he did to the dragons................

Sadly, it'll be guys like Mamo, Gagai, Tapine and Scott that he'll take and we'll be left with the duds you mentioned, minus Boyd thankfully. Also, that puts an end to any positive recruitment for the rest of the year.

Move the old hack on now.

That's complete bullshit mate, pure conjecture. A lot of Knights fans on here weren't fans but I know just as many who are very saddened by the news. Seems everyone has a different opinion on this one.

I haven't seen a lot of Bennett fans on here or in the multiple FB groups for Knights supporters I'm in.

I'm talking people like family, friends, other supporters I've spoken to at games etc. The people on SM and forums aren't a representation of the entire supporter base (And thank God given some of the crap I've seen on that mighty knights FB page lol).

Maybe now the Knights will get a coach who won't treat the job as an avenue for an early superannuation payment.

So how long before Boyd says he's homesick?

Also I hope Bennet never wins a premiership ever again... Ive never liked his style of herpes football.

I guess what probably upsets most knights supporters is expectations were very high & he's failed to deliver... Although last year's run to nearly make the GF seems easily forgotten.

Where else?

Broncs - Possible, that loss to the Sharks would not have helped, but I suspect that if he ever did return it would be as a operational manager rather than coach.

Tits - They would have to sack there coach ASAP for Wayne to go and reported money worries may not entice him.

Cronulla - The smokies in all this speculation. A club that is on its arse but a guaranteed immortal status if he ever won something with that mob.

Dogs, Manly, Easts, Souths, Storm, NZ, knights, Panthers are all out for obvious reasons

NQC - jury still out on Paul green but I can not see him getting the punt even if Wayne wanted to travel up there.

Wests, Eels - Potter and Arthur seem to be taking there clubs forward and I see no real desire or need to dump them.

Raiders - I'm sure they are regretting signing super coach Stuart but I can't see them sacking him this season even if they get the spoon.

My guess is that it will be the dragons - but those swamp rats are nothing if not good at spoiling the St.George club at every opportunity.

They were hardly a top 4 side last year, they were a fringe 8 side at best who won a couple lucky games in finals time, they come 7th with a 12W 11L record in regular season, very easily could have missed the 8, don't over talk his achievements, he done sweet f**k all at the Knights.

What's the status with Jake Mamo? Is he locked up tight, or is there wriggle room?

Id f**king love to see the Raiders throw a bit of money at him and try and snare him while there is a bit of uncertainity at the knights.

The Knights fans can scapegoat Bennett all they like, but anyone who watches the Knights play knows that the squad is full of peahearts who will put the cue in the rack as soon as it looks like they're collapsing. Darius included, which is certainly Bennett's issue. The spoon this year, if they win it is entirely the fault of the playing group.

Wayne signed or re-signed the majority of them. He built the squad and is charged with training and motivating them. He has to shoulder some responsibility. And the recruitment department should know who the peahearts are before they put six and seven figure contracts in front of them. That is their job.
