Wayne Bennett recommended Steve Price didn't he?

Bennett didn't come to us to build a club with a culture of success...he clearly came to win a premiership and that was accomplished. He, himself, said so when he announced he is leaving us. He said the job was done..he obviously didn't mean the job of building a culture of success but winning the premiership during his tenure.

When he announced he was going to Newcastle, he gave as one of the reasons that he wanted to build a culture of success there....he never said this about us.

Completely wrong - the current vernacular of Bennett is an extrension of the kinda ethos he talked off at the Dragons. Early on he referred to getting rid of our soft under-belly and returning our club to where "it belongs" which was consistantly at the top of the NRL. He did that over three years.

I blame Doust for not signing Bennet for 5yrs.

Price would of got more experience as assistant.

My tip is put Hornby in the coaching staff next year.

Agreed, but not this thread. Some of the contributors have been great. I'm still waiting for BBC's response though...

he is a great guy, and knows his stuff, one of the few posters on here, that i enjoy reading, sadly other committments have kept him away.

Definitely. Sadly I'm only a passive (passionate) supporter of the club these days. But he sounds like one of the genuine do'ers who got/gets involved in the club. Would love to hear more of what he has to say.

Drew would Mark Coyne ever make a play for CEO?

What is the politics of Doust's reign? How come he cannot be removed please?

Cheers Pat. Tonga is nice this time of year - nice, warm and the sun shines brightly. You should come visit :) I've definitely enjoyed living here.

I don't know a lot about Coyne. The little I do know is he qas quite hesitant to get involved on any side. Can't say I know what his intentions are, but I hope he sticks his nose in one day. Would be an asset to the club.

The structure of the Leagues club, RLFC and JV makes change incredibly difficult and very slow. Even if you got 3 members on the leagues board (which is the first step), you're looking at two to three years before real change could be enacted. Robinson, Doust and co have a very, very deep hold on the club and it makes uprooting them incredibly slow and involved.

Doust and Robinson will retire before they're 'ousted'; not enough supporters will come out on election day and cast their vote, essentially. I would say we have another 10 years of their meddling before any formal change of the guard could be considered as having passed without a huge effort from the supporters to rally and enact change.

To be honest, I also think there's not enough qualified men to replace them that could be trusted. There's about four or five really good egg's around, who would be beneficial if involved in the leagues club, but you can only devote part time energy to this and the club is running 24/7, so it's not easy to mount a ticket and keep your entire life operating normally. We really do need someone like Kevin Ryan, or Mark Coyne, to give it a go - men who have time, a lot of business nous and a league understanding.

Check out this thread, and you'll see some of the stuff that goes on and why it's so hard to enact change.

For Bennett it is just busines. He has the skills to improve a team and the skills to recruit a squad. However, he has to do this witin the cap rules.

In moving from the Broncos to the Dragons Bennett received a significant pay rise; probably more than Doust could afford and so the 3 year contract not the 5 year one.

In moving to Newcastle it was another significant pay rise, only this time it is to a club that could afford to pay him the big bucks for 5 years. Its a simple case of getting the best deal for himself.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Drew I appreciate it.

It's good to have a bit of an understanding of the whole Doust 'grip' on power. I've always just screamed 'oust Doust' but never really understood how it could all happen. You explaining it to gives me an informed view now, cheers.

Yeah it sounds like a demanding job that would take up a lot of time. Definitely does not sound easy.

I will check out that thread you recommended.

Stay well, thanks!
