Ways to improve A-League

I actually like the idea of a nationwide cup featuring a large variety of semi-professional and professional sides. That kind of thing is what makes football in England so damn interesting. The possibility that you could see the Glen Innes Highlanders bundle out the Newcastle Jets or see Marconi win the cup.

This is a great idea, however I would be concerned with the "ethnic" diversity and the problems that the NSL had, would come back and be bungled in with the A-League.

The last thing most spectators would want is to play against the likes of Bonnyrigg White Eagles away, not exactly a family fun enviroment. The main reason the A-League was created to make everyone feel welcome.

I have loved "football" for a while now, but before the a-league i couldnt go and enjoy a watching a game because I felt completly left out and even threatened at time.

I would rather go sit in the middle of "The Kennel" in a Sharks Jersey at Belmore Oval....

Its a shame, sure there are problems in England with voilence etc... but they dont have particular Ethnic based teams.

Why?

The Asian Champions League is already a done deal. It has nothing to do with what i was suggesting.

Why would you want to add a second team in Adelaide? In 20 years if every game is a guaranteed sellout, maybe but that isnt realistic. And if the game ever did grow to those levels, it is a fair bit that a promotion and relegation system would be developed anyway.

The only way the A league will grow is if people want to watch it. If the entire socceroos played there next year, there would be a massive effect on supporter interest. Because people at the moment are big fans of Kewell, Bresciano, Cahill, Viduka, Schwarzer etc. Even big Zjelko or Wilkshire would be a huge draw and people would line up to boo them in an A league game. Yet, before the Socceroos qualifiers, 90% of these signings would have had no effect on the public interest in the A league. The Asian cup will help enormously but again, there is the problem that not too many A league players will play in the main round. This wont help the A league.

The socceroos get 15000 to 90,000 whenever they play, no matter who is in their side. They are as big as the Cricket and Wallabies in terms of spectator, corporate and media interest. In fact, they are probably bigger than the Wallabies due to the fact that the Wallabies dont really have a large market outside NSW and Qld. If these two sports can be massive (financially and media wise) based on their poor international seasons (really there are no more than say 10, and i am being generours, decent international teams in those to sports), why couldnt soccer create their own international season like them. It would be far easier for the A league to retain Kewell, Viduka, Cahill etc through the socceroos than strictly through the A league club system. In fact, a full strenght Socceroos side (playing in a tournament like i proposed) is the only way, an australian side can compete with the large European clubs.

Problem is those Socceroos players won't be playing your tournament as you have suggested. They won't be released for a irrelevant tournament. It has to be FIFA recognised for them to even consider being released. So it is not ever a chance of happening. Nor should it be.

We have a good league and the Socceroos are going to have a major tournament every year now.

Asian Cup + qualifiers.
Confederations Cup if successful in Asia.
The Tiger Cup in South East Asia (Which we are in)
World Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

Your idea was OK 20 years ago but we are way past that now. Previously we could have done it as our best players were still here.

Next year we are a massive chance of winning that Asia Cup I can't wait to go to it.

As for the A League retaining Viduka, Kewell etc etc it won't happen the money is not there for it to happen. They can come back at the end of there careers and play ala Zelic and Yorke and we can keep picking up the Asian and South American players we have been as well as kepping hold of our younger kids that head off to early and usually to second rate sides overseas they are the ones we need to be keeping.

Players like Paul Reid, Ahmad Elrich, Nick Rizzo, Patrick Kisnorbo, Paul Henderson etc etc the list is endless.

sort of like Millwall in England

i see where you are coming from though. the A-League has done a remarkable job to eliminate the racial element from the clubs and this would see it reintroduced which,at whatever level, would not be beneficial to the code.

I go to State League and Winter League games all the time and it is not there. The clubs now know that this new regime in football will remove them forever if there is mis behaviour. Actually some of the Premier League stuff has been good this year.

that is great to hear. it has been one of the major things holding the code back in this country. hopefully it remains that way.

You miss the point. The Socceroos side i propose would be domestic based and not include the Europeans, for the reasons you stated. It would help the homegrown players get a media profile which in turn would help the A league. It would also help the younger players that you mentioned above get international experience and improve the full strength side, long term.

what's that?

by the way i dont like the cup competition idea, i love it!! imagine broadmeadow magic taking on the south melbourne knights, imagine sydney olympic taking on port adelaide pirates!!

also there should be premier league, and jersey flegg like competitions which comprise as the curtain raiser for each game which each a-league side having a team in each comp!

If A-League clubs can't support a reserves side (and that's understandable), I wouldn't mind seeing each club enter into some kind of partnership with a semi-professional club. It would allow players not being utilised in the top squad to get game time, and would act as a good nursery for up and comers.

The Tiger Cup is now tro be called the ASEAN Championship. Australia are in the ASEAN Football Federation of ASIA and as such can qualify for this tournament. It is only available for South East Asian teams.

Thailand and Singapore usually dominate it. It started in 1996 and was sponsored by Tiger Beer hence the Tiger Cup but they no longer sponsor it.

Thailand have won the last 3 from memory.

The Asian championships are like the Euro Championships once every 4 years.

Geez there are some wacko ideas in this thread...

Most clubs had to be supported by the FFA to survive this year.

bring andrew johns into one of the teams...lol nah seriously i think they should try stopping good players like archie thompson from going overseas, thats the main problem the A-league r gonna face. Once a new talent emerges, here comes the $$$, and he's off the Europe

The financial and career benefits aren't great enough for players to stay in Australia - and that's most of the problem.

On top of that, I desperately want our good young players going over to Europe to hone their craft. The quality of the A-League competition will never match up to the opportunity to play in Europe, compete against premier clubs, and play alongside world famous players.
