Week 2 finals: Souths v Sharks game day thread

Cronulla proved what frauds they were by finishing 2nd with a gift draw similar to Canberra in the last 2 months.

Fitzy probably loses the coach of the year gong now after the straight sets exit.
4 out of 11 for the year against teams in the top 8 and one of those 4 wins was against us in round 2 when they got us on the bell courtesy of a needless Ray Stone penalty... A sub 40% record against top 8 teams, surely that's some sort of record for the worst performing top 2 team in the home and away season??

Souths played poorly. Dropped a lot of ball.
Would of been great playing in Sydney and getting 60k crowd.
But Sharks ripped covoyws apart also. It was a fre crappy call by there play makers and the reef that cost them the game.

Yeah, Souths weren't all that good, more the Sharkies just shit the bed. 62% and 68% completion rate in a do or die final is poor, if the Bunnies bring that next week, the Panthers will grind them into dust.

Though on the other hand if they ( Souths ) click and complete in the mid to high 80's, with the attack they possess they are genuine contenders and will be very hard to stop.

I agree. They can beat Penrith. Defense was excellent and Penrith attack is plain

It's hard to judge their defence last night, yeah you could say that it was the pressure that made Sharks shit the bed, but equally you could so that the Sharkies continually shitting the bed meant their defense wasn't under all that much pressure.

You look to their lead up into the finals and their shut out of us is there, but then the Pennies put 26 on them with both their halves out, so it's pretty hard to take anything out of that, though again if you look at completions they were 71% against the Panthers, and 80% against us, and if you look at other games the completion rate stands out a fair bit in their wins vs losses.

Which when combined with watching how they play suggests to me that it's more domination in attack that eases the pressure on their defence than it is building their game on excellent defence, same as us really, though I reckon they rely even more on scoring than controlling field position than we do.

Whereas Penrith's game is truly built on defence, controlling field position, and then their attack. Hence their results are far more reliable, particularly when it comes to finals footy. They don't need to click in attack or throw the miracle ball, and they don't need any individual player to play at their best to win, they just need 7 or 8 outta 10 performances across the park.

It looked to me after 5 mins souths weren't losing it and they knew it. You get a vibe early.

I felt they were in cruise control.

Yeah, conversely the relative ease with which Nicholls crossed indicated the Sharkies hadn't really turned up to play, and I didn't see much after that to suggest otherwise.

Did he expect us to win by 60 in a semi or something? ... the opposition usually go ok for part of any game in a semi ... 40-4 is pretty comprehensive

Given the final score and how disorganised in attack we looked for the 20 or so Moses was off, I think it's fair to say that if Moses plays the whole game, we put 50 on them with ease and end their season.

Should have got there anyway.

Gutho no try and sivo should have scored in the corner.

Bit of a worry though right?? The fact we didn't score 50 and end their season... I mean, what if they make the GF and we play them, they might be out for revenge...

At the ground it felt like our intensity dropped off and the players were just going through the motions. Canberra gave up and it wasn’t until the last 5 mins that they decided to fight back. So I guess he’s talking about intensity, but why risk knocks, hammies etc when you are cruising? It smacks of a journo trying to find an angle.

Not including last year as all finals were in QLD. But interesting you look at souths and Parra and contrasting luck when it comes to having to travel at finals time.

Since 2017 outside of 2021 souths after next week would have played 13 finals and 11 of them been in Sydney. Including being the lower ranked team twice against Penrith at Homebush there home.

Only travelled twice in the finals one game in Canberra and once to Melbourne.

Compared to Parra have played 9 finals in this period after next week not including 2021. We have travelled 4 times.

2 x to Melbourne (17,19) another Melbourne away final in Brisbane (2020) and next week in Townsville.

Souths have lucked in barely having to travel in finals only getting on a plane once in 4 finals series as they would have got a bus to canberra compared to us every finals series we have had to travel interstate once.

In the same period that we have gone 30% in finals between 2017-2022.

The Sharks are worse they are 1 win from last 8 finals since the 2016 GF at 12.5%.
