The Sharks are farked.
Its been a long drawn out affair, but the winding up of the club will probably come with the new TV deal and expansion. Time to merge with a bid team (Qld most likelies) or fold.
I really think people are looking at the choices of expansion, relocation or folding the wrong way. It all comes down to possession of an NRL license. One way to think of it is that we have two new licenses coming up and 6 or whatever bids in the race for one of those. Another way to look at it is that we'll have 18 licenses and 24 clubs/individuals in the market for those licenses.
There is an active market for licenses and the existing team identities. Souths sold to Crowe/HaC, Manly sold to Penn/Delmege, Newcastle just sold to Tinkler, the Sharks look the most likely to sell next. In each case the preservation of the location, name and colours was a condition of the sale. For the right price, some or all of these conditions could probably be removed.
Of course there are other players in the market who are more interested in getting a license than keeping alive an existing identity. But that doesn't mean they're inflexible on the notion of taking over an existing identity if it ultimately gets them a team located where they want it at the right price. The license is the prize. The club identity and whether a new company runs it is secondary.
