OK - seriously - I havent kept up to date on the 2nd Brisbane team thread for a number of reasons (I usually avoid threads that are hundreds of pages long because if I wanted to read a novel I wouldnt log onto LU).

I did skim through the first pagfe of the "Names" thread - thought it was a giant pisstake because they were all utterly stupid.

That said - have they got a name? A confirmed stadium? A board with CEO? Coaching staff? I know they are making plenty of noise, but even AFL are claiming they have signed players.

And is there one bid? Which of the Logan, Ipswich and Brisbane II bids have folded? Have they combined resources? Have they even identified where they will get their fans from - and if not how they will survive by being the Broncos fans "second side" and having no "first side" supporters?

I'm dying to know.

On one hand there’s this bid which is run basically as a clone of the Broncos, even down to apparently wanting to use the “BB” alliteration in their name.

On the other there is the Ipswich Jets bid which is still plugging away, running as a members-owned+run club.

Haven’t heard anything from the Logan or Easts Tigers bids for a long time, assume they’re not in the running anymore.

Nothing is really set in stone yet aside from the act that both bids would play out of Lang Park if they got in which shouldn’t really be a surprise. The Jets reckon they’d build their own stadium out west eventually though.

Just heard Craig Davidson from the 2nd Brisbane bid team say "Perth are in".

He believes his bid is in a battle with the remaining bids for the other expansion spot. This was on ABC Grandstand.

Well done Perth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gallop was lined up for an interview directly after and said he didn't know where Craig got that one from, but you'd expect him to say that.

Again..well done Perth!!

Craig Davidson has been saying that ever since his bid started up

NRL club headed to Perth says rival bid from Brisbane

David Beniuk
From: AAP
June 05, 2011 4:23PM

THE bid team for a second NRL club in Brisbane believe a Perth side is a certainty, but league boss David Gallop has cast the biggest doubts yet on any expansion from 2013.

A spokesman for the consortium seeking to set up a new side in Brisbane, Craig Davison, said his team would be competing for the second spot if the NRL expanded by two teams, with a Western Australian side a certainty to take the first.

"The TV rights being negotiated will, I believe, be pushing a lot for two more teams,'' Davison told ABC radio.

"I believe one of them is looking very likely to be WA and the other one I believe should be Brisbane.

"I believe that WA is a lay down misere, they're in.

"So the issue for us is who's going to get the second gig.''

Gallop refuted the claim, adding delays to the formation of an independent commission to run the game could make it difficult to expand as soon as 2013.

"I'm not sure where Craig got that one from,'' Gallop said.

"At the core of (expansion) is knowing what our revenue is.

"Affordability is the key to expansion and making sure that our existing clubs and our existing players get more money is the starting point.

"It's not impossible for 2013 at this stage, but certainly as the commission continues to take some time, it's difficult to see that.

"But I'm not closing the door on it at this stage.''

Expansion will go hand in hand with the NRL's new broadcast deal after the current arrangement ends at the end of next year.

Broadcasters are thought to be keen on the WA time zone for live telecasts, and on more games featuring Queensland sides.

As well as from Brisbane and WA, bids are expected from the NSW Central Coast, Ipswich in Queensland, central Queensland, Papua New Guinea and Wellington in New Zealand.

The commission would complete negotiations for the new broadcast deal and, despite its formation dragging on longer than expected, Davison said there was still time for new clubs to be ready in time for a 2013 kickoff.

"I can see the commission coming on board in the next four or five weeks,'' he said.

"I can see a decision being made (calling) tenders some time in August and the winners being announced late October.

"We believe the eight commissioners who have been chosen and are about to be announced must be pretty smart guys and can make business decisions reasonably quickly in a matter of weeks, based on getting some understanding of the game from the people around them.''

The eight commissioners were expected to be named as early as this week, and Gallop admitted a major announcement was imminent.

"I think there's a possibility there'll be some announcements fairly shortly,'' he said.

The headline suggests that an existing club will relocate to Perth... So I lost my time reading something we all know.

Good to hear we continue to be favourites. I'll hold off the champagne a while longer though!

Perth set for NRL showpiece as WA bids for team in 2013

Michael Washbourne From: PerthNow June 15, 2011

PERTH'S bid for an NRL team in 2013 will hinge on the success of the WA Rugby League's promotion of the sport over the next two weeks.

The WA Rugby League consortium is considered the frontrunner to earn a licence for a new team should the NRL decide to expand the competition to 18 sides.

Next Friday night, Perth will host an NRL clash between South Sydney Rabbitohs and Brisbane Broncos at nib Stadium, with the match to be broadcast live into the eastern states on Channel 9.

The WARL plans to use the match as a golden opportunity to showcase the sport in the west and give the game’s powerbrokers little reason to reject Perth’s bid for an NRL team.

WARL chief executive John Sackson said the next fortnight would be crucial for the future of the proposed WA Reds in the national competition.

“NRL is the most watched game on Australian television, the most watched football code on Australian television, and yet this city hasn’t got a team competing,” he said.

“That’s pretty crazy to comprehend when we know the NRL stands for National Rugby League.

“There’s a very strong feeling within the NRL that the game has to expand to become a truly national game and Perth is critical in achieving that expansion, growth and development of the code.”

Members of the crowd who attend next Friday’s match will receive a “WA Reds in the NRL in 2013” placard to be waved in unison with fellow fans before the match.

Two lucky couples photographed at the game will also receive tickets to the NRL Grand Final in October.

The WA state side, which recently won an affiliated Australian state championship tournament, will play a British representative side in the curtain raiser to the main event, kicking off at 4.45pm.

Sackson hopes more than 20,000 people flock through the gates in support of Perth’s NRL bid.

“It’s very important for the sporting public of WA to vote with their feet and get out and support the Rabbitohs-Broncos game on June 24,” he said.

“If that happens it reflects that rugby league is alive and well and strong and growing in WA and that there is a hunger for NRL in WA.

“A very good crowd on June 24 will resonate strongly back at NRL headquarters and I think that will send quite a powerful message that will no doubt support our bid.”

The festivities for next Friday’s clash begin on Wednesday, with more than 350 school children expected to flock to nib Stadium for a rugby league clinic run by Rabbitohs stars Sam Burgess and Roy Asotasi and club legend Mario Fenech.

South Sydney will train at the venue after the clinic and sign autographs for hundreds of fans.

At the same time in Kalgoorlie, NRL ambassadors and former competition greats Trent Barrett, Hazem El Masri and David Peachey will run a clinic for regional rugby league fans.

WA Parliament House will host the “Welcome NRL to WA” function on Wednesday night, hosted by South Perth MLA and avid sports fan John McGrath.

Burgess, Asotasi and Fenech are expected to attend, along with former Newcastle champion and rugby league personality Paul “The Chief” Harragon, South Sydney CEO Shane Richardson and his Brisbane Broncos counterpart Paul White.

WARL board members, executive and local club presidents will also be in attendance.

Harragon and El Masri will also address guests at next Thursday’s corporate luncheon at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

NRL board member Katie Page, the wife of high-profile businessman Gerry Harvey, will host a “Harvey Norman Women in League” dinner on Thursday night, with about 200 people expected to attend.

Perth bid team urges earlier expansion

The man behind Perth’s bid for an NRL team fears the league could lose some momentum if expansion was delayed until 2015. Expansion from 16 to 18 teams was initially expected to coincide with the next TV rights deal, which begins in 2013.

But NRL chief executive David Gallop last week flagged the prospect of the NRL waiting until 2015 before expanding further, allowing existing clubs more time to stabilise themselves financially.

Western Australia Rugby League chief executive John Sackson said he understood Gallop’s concerns but believed a 2013 entry for a Perth-based team would strengthen the competition.
“I just feel that 2015 is just that little bit too far away,” Sackson told AAP on Wednesday.
“Rugby league has momentum here now. I think we’ve got a lot more media, community and corporate interest in the game.

“If rugby league is genuine about its intention to grow and develop nationally then strategically it just makes sense to come to Perth.
“It’s fertile ground. In the days of the Reds we had crowds as high as 25,000 and average crowds over a season of 16,500.

“There are NRL clubs in Sydney that would kill to have that sort of average crowd. We believe it’s achievable.
“There’s a lot more expatriate eastern staters living here now than there was back then.
“Having said that, at the end of the day we want an NRL team playing in Perth, and if the governing body felt 2015 was the year for expansion, then if we won the right we would embrace it.”
Perth, Brisbane, Ipswich in Queensland, the NSW Central Coast, Central Queensland, Papua New Guinea and Wellington have expressed an interest in joining the NRL from 2013.

But any decision on expansion won’t be made until the independent commission is formed later this year.
Sackson said the Perth bid team would continue to work on a 2013 entry.
“We will continue our focus on 2013 until someone tells us it’s not going to be 2013,” Sackson said.
“But clearly as time ticks over, the longer this goes, the longer it will eat into the 18 months (preparation a team would need).
“David Gallop has always been consistent saying any new franchise would need 18 months from acceptance to kick-off.
“The more that time erodes, the greater the risk of a less than perfect launch if you were a successful franchise.”
Perth fans will get a taste of NRL action on Friday night when South Sydney play host to Brisbane at nib Stadium
.
Sackson was confident a crowd in excess of 15,000 would attend the match, sending a powerful message to the NRL.
“With people voting with their feet to come out and see NRL, it would be a terrific endorsement for our bid,” Sackson said.

I think that the IC really needs to find a way to have expansion no later than 2014...

Game day is here at last. Our annual chance to catch NRL live in Perth, hoping for good weather and a great crowd. Heard that 17-18k tickets have been sold so a good walk up should see a very healthy crowd.

Bit disappointing for Perth fans Souths v Broncos game won't be shown on TV till 2am after the Wests v Bulldogs match!

There should of been a push to show the game at a reasonable time, like 9:30pm, I think it would of been a good boost to the Perth bid.
