Western Melbourne - NRL Expansion (2nd Victorian Team)

Melbourne 2 is a laughably shit idea.

Cannibalising the Storms fanbase would be a disaster.

The WMG group (who own WU united) have no funding for their stadium nor any authority approval.

The stadium will not be delivered by 2026, and even if it was, it's intended to be privately owned (as if) and they claim restricted for soccer only.

There current training facility, which is being constructed, is no better then a suburban soccer grandstand.

Storm are a long long way from their ceiling. Even if they were consistently selling out AAMI there would be an argument that pushing for a 40-50k upgrade of AAMI would be a better option than throwing a second side in there.

In saying that Melbourne 2 is a better option than some that have been pushed on here or by the media.

Perth, Adelaide, Christchurch, Wellington & Western Brisbane ahead at this stage but I wouldn’t rule out Melbourne 2 in the medium-long term.
I agree with Perth being a frontrunner however I'm conflicted about an NZ2 team. The Storm are in a much bigger market, financially more stable and last season had the most members in the NRL. Junior numbers are at a record-high this season for Victorian rugby league. You also take into account the success of the Storm. That being said, comparing an NZ2 team to a Melb2 you'd have to go with Melb2 all things considered. The Storm are a stronger brand than the Warriors, and would be better off with a competing rival team, especially given the fact the Wahs just spent two and a half years away from NZ.

Add into fact population & market size, travel and logistics.

The best thing about this thread will be a bloke living in Perth telling everyone what’s happening thousands of miles away in Melbourne and not Sydney and Brisbane for a change. WAs biggest know all has fresh material!
How to turn steer this discussion into pushing a case ahead for my local Perf consortium, ahead of everyone else...... or just bag on PVL and talk up AFL
In every expansion thread

We need a team in Perth before we even think about Melbourne 2.
No we don't, you need to stop counting using Potatos again...
Neither are going to expand the player pool, so if the NRL are dead serious about both areas for a potential licences for the 19 & 20 teams, they need no.18 to be productive in that area

WHY WESTERN MELBOURNE?

file.jpg

- Western Melbourne is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia with a large and diverse population, which presents a potential untapped market for the NRL. An expansion team could attract new fans and help grow the game in this region. According to the 2021-22 ABS, the population of the Western Melbourne LGA (including Brimbank and Melton) is estimated to be over 1.1+ million for the metropolitan region alone. Including Greater Geelong and Ballarat, the market size increases to over 1.5 million. This would rank Western Melbourne 5th-6th in the NRL by population/market size.

- The addition of a 2nd Victorian NRL team creates a new rivalry in Australian sports. A Western Melbourne-Victoria based team would form a blockbuster cross-city derby with the Melbourne Storm - between Melbourne's west and Melbourne's south-east.

- Junior numbers for rugby league in Victoria are at a record-breaking high in 2023, with over 4,400+ juniors signed up and counting. As the game continues to grow at grassroots level, a 2nd Victorian NRL team would help accelerate that growth and provide more funding and resources for junior clubs. It also opens up more pathways and opportunities for young kids aspiring to play in the NRL.

- Many NRL players have played and developed in the Victorian junior ranks, particularly with western-based clubs, including Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Jamayne Taunoa-Brown, Zev John, Ben Nakubuwai (Altona Roosters), Dean Ieremaia, Sione Finau, Haele Finau, Fonua Pole (Sunbury United) and Greg Marzhew (North West Wolves). Other greats such as Gareth Widdop and Jeremy Smith have also had stints with western junior clubs.

- A potential Western Melbourne NRL side could look at a variety of options for stadiums, including the ideal destination of Wyndham City Stadium (Tarneit) which is located in the heart of Melbourne's western suburbs. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the 15,000-capacity multisport stadium is being developed as part of the 'Wyndham Stadium Precinct' which includes a 63-hectare world class sport, entertainment, business and residential precinct. GMHBA Stadium in Geelong or Mars Stadium/Moreshead Park in Ballarat are other options. Otherwise, Marvel Stadium and AAMI Park are alternate options located in Melbourne's CBD.

- NRL boss Peter V'Landys has talked about plans to expand the NRL competition to 20 teams by 2032. While we support the growth of the game nationally and expanding into other regions like Perth, a 2nd NZ team etc a 2nd Victorian NRL team would also have logistical and financial advtanges compared to other major cities i.e. travel costs and distance.

- With the kiwi/Māori and Pasifika demographic in Melbourne, another potential rivalry could be on the cards with the New Zealand Warriors. With the annual ANZAC Day clash against the Storm being a popular fixture with Warriors supporters, the possibility of two away games in Melbourne could also be an ideal proposition for the NRL.

Could Geelong be a more viable 2nd Vic team? Can see a solid rivalry forming if the club was based in a different city rather than the western burbs of Melbs.
Analytically and logistically speaking it's a lot more feasable to base it in the suburbs while potentially taking regional games to Geelong and Ballarat.

Personally I'd like to see a hypothetical 2nd VIC team adopt a name such like the 'Western Victorians' to help encapsulate the entire western corridor of Victoria. This would makes sense when you include Geelong and Ballarat as part of the market.

Melbourne bears 🐻
AMMI Park

Melbourne Bears would be interesting.

The Bears would be equipped to succeed as they're an established brand with fans and supporters.

North Sydney NSW Cup would be their feeder club.

I could see Storm v Bears being a mini State of Origin, as Storm fans generally barrack for QLD while the Melbourne Bears being a NSW product would have their supporters to go for Blues. So the Melbourne Derby would also have that element added to the rivalry.

Woah, this could actually be big.

It could work... maybe.

Give it a decade or so and Geelong will be a Western burb
Interested to see the claims of an Alt account. This new chap seems legit to me and knows what he’s talking about. Personally I think vic 2 is a few years off but it’s a good strategy by the nrl to create a market for a team and push the discussion about who will be next.
