Western Melbourne - NRL Expansion (2nd Victorian Team)

If it were up to me, based purely off my self perceived marketing genius I would go:
18th - Perth
19th - Te Waipounamu Orcas (they'd be referred to as 'The Orcas' but officially Te Waipounamu is the location)
20th - Brisbane 3
Not bad, but any South Island NRL team (that's the Te Waipounamu bit for those not familiar with the Maori placename) would have to clear Orcas with the Wellington Rugby League - unless you're thinking of a Christchurch team that plays a few home games in Welly for use of that brand.

I honestly think Te Waipounamu Kea would be a good brand. Use the native alpine parrot, as mountains run all the way along the South Island, and Green orange & brown would be VERY distinctive!

Re: South East vs West

IF and whenever a second melbourne team comes in the west makes the most sense - probably the biggest complaint about the dolphins admission is that is didn't create any real geographic divide with both clubs based north of the river (and "The")

A look at a map of NRL Vic club locations shows a basically even split SE to W

The Storm are based in Richmond (se side of the river) and their focus local clubs wise has always skewed a lot more towards the south east clubs than the west

As far as pop growth, yes it's growing in all directions but the west is growing a lot more, a look at any map will already show you the SE sprawl is quite large, especially compared to the west, and ideally youd hope won't grow much more (however the density in the SE is increasing rapidly)

Western Melbourne is predicted to join to Geelongs northwards sprawl in the not so distant future, with Ballarat and Bendigo become almost satellite suburbs

Tldr: 2nd team in Melbourne has to either be another whole city team both based centrally, or a Western team, Storm are the SE much more than they are the West

Yes Melbourne with 10 teams (Geelong included) with multiple clubs that average over around 50k a game, isn't much of an AFL centric town.
Thing with this though is we are a shit load bigger than Adelaide mate.

The difference in support levels is probably not as stark when you factor in 9 Melbourne clubs vs 2 Adelaide ones

Adelaide is more into AFL than Melbourne?

That will do me.

Sorry @Pneuma I was responding to you in good faith, I didn't realise this was joke account.

Well played sir.
As an nrl loving Adelaidian, I’ve got to agree with Pneuma on this one. There’s a lot of hate for NRL in SA, not just disinterest. Obv there’s pockets of expats from east coast and the Pac Islands. Apart from that, the belief of the thugby stereotype is alive and well. Although it’s more aimed at league than union.
in fact, it’s prob the only place in Aus where RL is ranked 4th out of footy codes. Heck,if you included NFL it may well be fifth.

that being said, I would still put ADL down for a team before a second Melbourne team. The idea of needing two teams to serve as rivals doesnt really work if it’s not the dominant code with local tribalism. An ADL team would actually be a great rival for the storm, as some others have mentioned earlier. I’m just honest enough to know that ADL should not come before Perth and another nz team sadly.

League would be a distant fourth in Melbourne to, if it wasn't for the introduction of the Storm 25 years ago.

That's why having a team in a market like Perth and Adelaide is so important for the games profile in these regions, and why a 2nd team in Melbourne would do nothing but cannibalise existing support.

That’s what I’ve found. League is really on the nose there. Perth is far more league friendly and should have a team decades before Adelaide.

Quick question. Would there be a bigger population in the north of the city?
