Why is this even being discussed? pistol Pete threw out some click bait to try and take a bot of media away from afls genuine expansion. Melbourne2 isnt happening.
probably not going to happen but its worthy of discussion. Melbourne 2 should definitely be planned for well down the track. Only problem is that this is the NRL, we don't do "plans". I think West Melbourne could be ripe for relocation one day. Maybe the Raiders can move there if we are still playing out of the windy concrete bunker at Bruce in 10 years.

Quick question. Would there be a bigger population in the north of the city?

Melbourne's northern suburbs is home to a million people, with growth projected to reach 1.5 million by 2036. They also have the least amount of junior clubs. This is where the western market has the advantange in both population, projected growth and junior numbers. It also just makes the most sense geographically speaking given the west-southeast divide.
Using the yarra as the ideal divide, the north would be part of the west in terms of catchments

Heres a map of Melbourne's growth areas for anyone interested

Catchments is an antiquated Sydney thing.

Melbourne needs development of all levels of junior league, North, south, East and West, with no borders or limits.

Saying the West has more juniors then the North is meaningless as its such a tiny number to be statistically irrelevant.

There are no borders in Sydney anymore, everywhere North/East/South/West comes mostly from the West.
Perth should be next, then anywhere in Australia e.g. Adelaide, Melb2, Bris3 before another overseas team.
No more blow ins from across the ditch, it’s not up to the NRL to develop other Countries and help with Government agendas.

You don’t think another NZ team would be a good idea?

Not for a long time, rugby union is like a religion over in NZ especially in Wellington, it took the Warriors years to establish themselves despite being a one Country team.
They changed their colours to that of their National team, they straightened their logos tongue thinking bad juju, and many actual NZ’s didn’t want to cross the ditch to actually play for the Warriors.
I think if they tried to base a rugby league team on the other side of NZ, opposite to the Warriors it will have way more obstacles than the Warriors ever faced.

All the talk is about Pasifika ?, is this a fairy tale thread then ?.

You are maybe confused with this PNG bid which is kind of grouping in all of the Pacific Islands but also basing them in Australia.

Because you know all of the Pacific Islands are the same. Nothing also says Pacific Islands more then basing them in Australia as well.

Well the Pasifika idea is to combine PNG, Samoan, Tongan, Fijian and Cook Islands players and base them out of Cairns, why not West Melbourne instead.

Not sure if you're just trolling but anyway,
Because the Cairns idea is stupid, but at least its on the right ocean

Personally I don't believe a Pasifika team is a good idea. Particularly if you use Moana Pasifika as a model, even the Fijian Drua. Outside of Suva, they struggle to draw crowds big time. In comparison to the idea of two teams in Melbourne, essentially you risk cannibalising the fanbase of all NRL teams with a Pasifika team. Also would prefer clubs to be based on the premise of geography welcoming of all backgrounds and nationalities instead of what would essentially be an ethnic-based club. Also fyi I'm of Pasifika heritage.

This! a pasifika style team doesn't belong in a domestic comp, if you want a PNG team, or a pacific island team, actually base it in a city on one of those island and have them operate as a normal club, if this isnt viable (it isnt, atm), then wait until it is

if anything the only place you'd bring in a Pacifika team would be a west indies, or GB style team for international games, but then you'd lose the great rivalry matches like Tonga vs Samoa, although a joint team would be a huge threat in world cups

imagine a bi yearly 6 nations comp between England, France, PNG, NZ, Aus & a joint Pacific

There're some big question marks over the viability of those games in Fiji and Moana's game in Apia as well.

Their ability to draw decent crowds in the islands doesn't mean much if it isn't profitable.

7 pages! 7 bloody pages!

I have next to an eternity available and I still do not have time to go through 7 bloody pages of comments that are either entertaining this idea or baiting @Perth Red which I am sure is all there is.

I clicked it as I was looking forward to a laugh, then I noticed the OP was actually serious.

A second Melbourne team! In the next 40 years!

hahahahaha

aaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

he said it could happen in the next 5 years!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

aaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahauauahahauahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

This topic is about as plausible as an NRL Magic Weekend being held in Tahiti.

Oh dear. Well I did get the laugh I was looking for. Let’s see if there is another post I can laugh about like PNG being the next NRL club… aaahahaha, I am laughing at the thought of that one already.
