Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor says his side aren't up to NRL standard at times

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor says some of his team's efforts are not up to NRL standards as he hit out at their "soft" defence as they slumped to their fourth consecutive NRL defeat.

Taylor watched on as the Tigers trailed 19-2 against the Gold Coast Titans before rallying in the second half to snatch a one-point lead. Their joy was short-lived, however, with the Titans scoring to steal the game back via an Anthony Don try to win 27-20.

"Very disappointing performance," Taylor said. "It's probably a continuation of where we are at. That is some really good patches, some patches that aren't good enough. The boys fought hard, they fought hard to get back into it and fought hard for a lot of the night. We just have lapses that aren't of NRL standard. The tries that were conceded were soft and that's really disappointing with how hard we are working on that area."

Taylor has focused on the Tigers' defence and consistency since taking control of the club this season. He has done so with a young squad, which included two more debutants in Nathan Milone and Manaia Cherrington.

"We identified consistency as an area we want to improve" Taylor said. "We're still working. We did well enough, we played enough good footy to win a game.

"It's up and down. We are understanding it better and the guys realise what's required but it's a matter of getting it done for 80 minutes. We're working really hard and then we stop.

"As a team we are looking to improve on what we did last season. When you look at it defence is the area that as a team we were last last season. We want to improve on that area.

"We've had four losses. The pain I felt in the first two losses was we are miles away. The pain the last two weeks is we aren't as far away but we still have a way to go. We are moving in that right direction. We played some good footy in the games that we won."

Titans coach Neil Henry said his side did well to fight back against a hostile Leichhardt Oval crowd.

"Always enjoy a win," Henry said. "The way the game panned out it was a bit of relief. They had a lot of momentum and the crowd starting to cheer. Very proud of the effort."

Henry was bemused when he watched Aidan Sezer kick an early second half field goal to extend his team's lead to 17. The field goal started the Tigers' onslaught in which they would go on to score three tries in 12 minutes to snatch the lead.

Henry claimed Sezer had misread the scores when he kicked the goal.

"Aidan looked at the scoreboard and forgot the two points," Henry said. "He was hoping to kick them out. in the end it ended up being seven points and made it difficult for them."

The thing that gets to me with this guy is that he appears to have no idea and his spin is getting caught out all the time.

Our defence is poor. His excuse that we have been focussing on that and then the attack will come is a load of BS.

I actually thought that was a better effort though.

If the club isn't up to NRL standard then who's responsibility is that?

Massive revelation by Taylor !! The truth is much about this team is substandard including Taylor's phoney rhetoric. He makes Ricky Stuart seem like a Rhodes scholar.I can't help but wonder how the principled Potter was replaced by this miserable halfwit.I suppose as long as our egotistical 900k/yr captain & the rugby league illiterate chairwoman mg are happy with him & the abyss we are in then it's all fine @ pussytown !!

I think he is doing the best with what he has. There is no experience. When you lead by 1 point with 10 min to play you call on experienced players to lead the side. The majority of the 17 last night have played less than 50 NRL games. They will get better and we will have a golden era very soon

You had a choice last season between the hard way and the easy way.

Anyway win a few games and all is forgotten. Hope u guys get going Maybe Rob Farah can step up and show the way.

Farah's main priority is origin & for all his experience he wouldn't have got us home last nite when leading by 1 pt as he would've taken the wrong options as he has on numerous occasions in the past.

Our winning percentage without Farah was at roughly 25% before the loss to the titans. To say he'd have made no difference is a bit harsh mate. Clearly we do it tough when he's not there !

Mario I'd like to share your optimism but we are a horrendous dogs breakfast & there's very little to be hopeful about.

We have a windbag coach, a huge number of players who wouldn't shine in park football & a board who are pompous twats & clueless as to what's genuinely required for success in the nrl.

Hell will freeze over b4 we experience a golden age !

No easy solution in sight. This year is already gone and, at this stage, it is hard to see it being even useful as a building stage for next year. WT have taken the cheap option of wholely going for local youth over a blend of local youth and purchased experience. The younguns that have tasted nrl last year have not really progressed and stepped up (Sironen, Brooks etc) and WT have been unable to develop their own attacking, line breaking backrowers. We have a few defensive backrowers but none that can attack.

In addition we have punted on a halves pairing of two totally inexperienced, teenage players. Blake Austin was still young, wanted a permanent 6 role and we told him to look elsewhere and kept Moses. Would it have mattered that much if we told Moses to wait a few years and develop in State Cup or look elsewhere and kept Austin, a proven performer? I think we would be performing better with Brooks at 7 and Austin at 6 as our long term halves than what we have.

Edit- there is hope in the backline with Nufo, Simona and Tedesco but Im scratching my had with letting Koriobete go. Lawrence has to go to backline as the centre role is now beyond him and Richards will not be extended into next year.

WT cannot buy success at the bargain basement corner. We have to open the wallet, let the moths out and buy targeted players in the positions we need now for next year or else 2016 will be the same as 2015 and 2017 the same yet again.

Potter did not deserve the kniving he got last year, but I bet he is feeling glad to be out of the joint at present. Even the choice of Taylor over Brown as his replacement should have given us a portent fo the future- a proven premiership winning coach let slip for a lesser credentialed assistant coach whose previous experience at leading a coaching outfit at Souths ended in ignomy.

We have a long way to go......our backrow is a f**king disgrace, our 6 is very questionable and our centres are f**ked.

Taylor has shown in the past he is a decent coach but I think you guys need to have some decent experience sprinkled throughout the squad. An older 6 like Maloney would help Brooks too imo

It doesn't take a genius to work out if you run a team out each week and only half of them are FG standard the chances of you winning are going to be pretty f**king low.

Not only do we have a glaring scarcity of genuine 1st graders but amongst our biggest liabilities is the pathetic under-achieving waste of space from the shire who has 10 yrs 1st grade experience with us.

Compare the -ve influence this peaheart would have on our young forwards vs that of someone with the integrity & work ethic of Petero would've had in his twilight yrs @ Penrith & broncos.

...and to rub salt in the wound we have to watch Brownie playing like a man possessed @ souths while we are stuck with the sluggish big red fraudster !!
