Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor says his side aren't up to NRL standard at times

Anyone with half a brain realizes we should have kept Austin and let Moses spend a year in nsw cup. That said, the decision was based on a panic about Moses signing elsewhere. Paying overs on someone with no first grade because of the possibility he will leave is stupid.

On other matters, the coaching is worrying me, our last tackle options are poor. I can put up with more structure but our last tackle options have to improve. I would like to see siro given a licence to offload with tedesco playing off him. I also worry about our discipline, we seem to lose the penalty count every week.

Milone was okay on Friday, it was Hoeter who kept getting found out. Now that may be because he had no confidence with Brooks, which may have resulted from a different second rower playing alongside Brooks.

I also worry that JT is sticking with non performing forwards such as Santi Buchanan and Galloway. I think we need to try someone else.

If the team that JT picks are not up to his one out game plan of bash and barge maybe he should think of a new approach that actually benefits and takes advantage of his players talent.

We have to watch Brownie playing like a man possessed and we have also let Bodene Thompson go. We needed his experience to play and defend out next to Brooks.

Ryan Girdler said that Moses should be in NSW Cup and we need an experienced 5/8 to help Brooks. I'd go further and say we need that 5/8 to be experienced enough to take over the kicking game in general play and goal kicks i.e. Take over from Richards and educate the centre pairing of Simona and whoever they settle on as the other centre.

We don't need to spend any money on backs other than that 5/8
We do need to spend some money on a big bopper of a back rower or prop who can support Farah, Woods and Taupau

That's what got Souths to the finals when he coached them coupled with solid defence.

He doesn't know another way.

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor targets performance over results

Brad Walter
Published: June 11, 2015 - 7:15PM

Wests Tigers have scored just one point less than St George Illawarra this season, but are three rungs off the bottom of the NRL ladder whereas the Dragons are three places from the top.

The obvious difference lies in defence, with the Tigers having conceded 242 points compared to 155 by the Dragons. That is why Jason Taylor is focusing on the future rather than trying to end a four-game losing streak against South Sydney on Friday night.

If the Tigers are to again become a premiership force – and not just challenge for a spot in the finals, as they have done for the past decade since their 2005 grand final win – Taylor reasons that the joint venture outfit has to improve what was the worst defence in the NRL last season.

In six of their last nine matches, the Tigers have scored 20 points or more but won just two of those and Taylor said that would not change until they improve defensively.

"We are on a path to improvement, a path to playing a tougher style of footy that will be much more successful for us down the track," Taylor said before the clash with the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium.

"Over the last few years we have been a very attack-oriented team and we want to improve what we do when the opposition has got the ball, we want to work harder off the ball so that is the path we are going down."

While it may be frustrating for fans, Taylor believes there have been signs of improvement in recent weeks and he insists the Tigers aren't sacrificing attack for a better defence.

However, the Tigers are developing more structure around their attack and the likes of Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses are taking time to adapt as they had been used to playing off the cuff.

"We have been well down the ladder for the last few years and you don't turn that around overnight but there are some real positive signs for us and the future is really bright here," Taylor said.

"It is about what we are developing here and we are not overly concerned about where we are right now on the ladder because we know that everything is heading in the right direction in general. It's not about the result, it's about our performances. We're working really hard to improve our performances.

"We're working hard on our defence and we want to improve that, and it's number one for us, but it doesn't mean that we aren't practising our attack and that we don't want to attack well. It's just a matter of getting the two things to work well in tandem."

Another area Taylor is working to improve is the depth of his squad. He refuses to rush players back from injury until they are 100 per cent fit.

Taylor has this year given NRL debuts to Nathan Milone, Delouise Hoeter, Lamar Liolevave and Manaia Cherrington, who was honoured with a haka from family and friends after an impressive performance at hooker in place of injured skipper Robbie Farah in last Friday night's 27-20 loss to Gold Coast.

Winger David Nofoaluma and centre Tim Simona return from injury against Souths, while Taylor said former Test centre Chris Lawrence would now spend most games in the back row unless the Tigers had injuries.

What a piece of cr#p.............. Obviously given permission to write of 2015 season by the management but not the fans. Would anybody have brought WT fan packages for 2015 if they knew this at the start of the season?

Exactly. But given we won't be active in the player market next year, i doubt memberships are going to improve next year with this attitude.

The lack of action in the player market is troubling. When a prop and a centre are your two best backrowers there are obvious roster issues.

My wife was talking about buying me a fan membership for next year as a present. I dont think I'll bother as my enthusiasm is absent at this stage. I'm just cranky at coach, club and the playing roster. I hope I can get over it.

Magpies Forever get your wife to spend the money on something that you can derive joy from instead of the perpetual torment & misery this club delivers.

I stopped wasting my hard earned money on a season ticket for this rabble a few yrs ago & for the first time in decades I had no eagerness to attend a game @ the beloved leichhardt oval last week.

The constant drivel that Taylor spouts is seriously pissing me of & it will take a miracle for us to be competitive over the next few yrs.

There's some reasonable points in there IMO.

Firstly, he was appointed well after recruitment was done, can only work with what you have.

Secondly, in a lost season such as this performance is far more important than results. If you can get guys playing good football, get some experience into players etc it's gonna help them in the future. Might even turn losses this season into wins next year.

Nothing wrong with a shit couple of years if it is used productively to set yourselves up for a longer period of time as a competitive unit. Now whether or not Taylor is helping with that is the real question but I think he deserves a bit of patience to see what he can do.

The Austin/Moses thing does seem like a shit move from the club. Brooks probably should've been in lower grades last year and Moses this year.

But on this season, with the complete lack of forward depth, it was never going to go particularly well.

Have you bought anyone for next season yet? Sam Moa getting a release from the Roosters (if he gets a reasonable deal) would be a good purchase. No nonsense front rower. Not sure what back rowers are on the market.

At the end of Round 13 last year, the Tigers were in top 8 and had 7 wins

This year we have scored 40 less points and conceded 10 less points.

The only reason the club turned to shit last year was because of the white-anting of Potter

The week the shit hit the fan, the Tigers had come off a 46-18 flogging of the Bulldogs and were 9th on the ladder and still a good chance to make the finals

After the Tallis/Farah/Potter/Mayer bullshit kicked off the club had 6 straight losses, scoring 50 points and conceding 225 points.

This year with an extra years experience, the club has regressed under Taylor.

For all his talk about improving the defence he has literally improved nothing but has wrecked the attack.

The club will end up with a better record by seasons end, as Taylor will not suffer the public white anting bullshit that pitted coach against captain while the CEO sat on his hands and did f**king nothing but fan the flames with his own incompetence.

Truth is, the club was improving under Potter.

It isn't improving anymore.

Trouble is we have been hearing the talk of rebuilding, or time to settle in, for years on end.

The way things are we have a squad at virtually the State Cup standard of experience and quality and no-one in club management seems to have their neck on the line for this situation being allowed to eventuate. Too many boys are caught up in the big boys league of NRL standard when they should still be learning their trade in the State Cup.

The NRL is not a beginners league and we are suffering for our management considering it as such with permitting such a woefully under experienced and youthful, unprepared squad for the NRL. We are a laughing stock. The Storm, Sea Eagles, Roosters, Rabbotohs and the Bulldogs are the standard to which we should be aspiring.
