Wests Tigers shift east

Exclusive by Dean Ritchie | October 13, 2008

WESTS Tigers will this week officially walk away from Homebush and shift to the Sydney Football Stadium in a move that has shocked the Sydney Roosters. The Daily Telegraph understands the Tigers and the SCG Trust have struck a deal with six games to be played at the SFS and three each at Campbelltown Stadium and Leichhardt Oval.
In a financial boon for the club, Wests Tigers will receive about $100,000 for each game through gate takings.
The club claims it has undertaken research showing their western Sydney fans will travel to Moore Park for games.
Privately, the NRL has backed the move amid concerns at the vast amount of empty seats at every televised game at ANZ Stadium. But the Roosters were last night miffed and confused about the move.
"It all seems a bit strange," senior Sydney Roosters official Richard Fisk said. "I thought they were the Wests Tigers, not the East Tigers.
Incoming Wests Tigers chief executive Scott Longmuir believes his club's western Sydney fans will travel east.
"Our club has a geographically broad brand name," he said.
"We have done assessments on this. The distance and travel time from Campbelltown isn't that far or that long. I think the fans will (travel), for sure.
"All successful teams from around the world have the strongest markets and best stadiums."
SCG Trust chief executive Jamie Barkley claimed Wests Tigers' move was a "terrific outcome".
"The SFS and the Wests Tigers will form a strong partnership," he said.
ANZ Stadium CEO Ken Edwards harboured no animosity toward the Tigers.
"We wish them all the best. We understand they are going for good, sound financial reasons," Edwards said.
"We've had five good years with the Tigers. They won a premiership here and we hope that they will return one day."
In two Daily Telegraph reader polls, both fans and players voted the SFS Sydney's best rugby league venue.
"The balance between commercial return and looking after fans is a delicate one," NRL CEO David Gallop said. "Hopefully this move will ensure Wests Tigers continue to strike the balance they are looking for."
The three matches which are set down for Campbelltown will be played early next season with the ground closed for renovation at the end of May.

Great move, once again the Tigers leading the way with things like this. SFS is the best football ground in Sydney by far and it doesn't get used (besides Easts games which don't really count). Also it is not far from Balmain and closer to Campbelltown.

Closer to Campbelltown?

In which dimension?

f**king stupid decision. They've just alienated the rest of the Campbelltown supporters by adding an hour to the travelling time to 6 games per year.

Id be happy if we had 6 at campbelltown and 6 at Leichhardt

Ditto.

The problem is that "out of sight, out of mind" comes in to play when you only get 3 games within cooee of your home ground per season.

Moving to the SFS is an outrageously stupid decision. for all its faults, ANZ was still readily accessible to both sets of JV fans, the SFS is a prick to get to.

Silence.

It's what you should bring to this topic.

Public transport to ANZ is very good, public transport to the SFS is atrocious.

someone got up on the wrong side of the bed!

Yes I agree public transport wise, but ANZ is not easy either. At the end of the day they are a nomad team which is why their supporter base is so large. Spectator wise good decision, financially good decision, fan wise...mixed.

ANZ is a piece of piss.

Train to Lidcombe, change for train to Olympic, 5 minute walk.

SFS is sh*t.

Train to central, bus or 5k walk up Foveaux St....

SFS is the superior ground, but it isn't that superior.

No one drives any more. The only ground in Sydney that I drive to is Campbelltown.

The problem being the SFS will have a clause what games they get and they will throw the crumbs to our two suburban grounds.

Now they wonder why the cant get bumber crowds at Cambo. They should just go to AFL headquaters and give them the key to the southwest of sydney. Three games of football in five to six months is pathetic. What message are we sending out their. I would have thought Gallop and the NRL would be demanding that the joint venture increase their exposure in the southwest of sydney.

get ready to pay $22.00 parking on a piece of dirt gravel or potentially walk 30 minutes to get on a train.

not to mention the traffic coming in and out of the sfs...

this is a horrible move for the Wests Tigers.

How is the SFS a prick to get to?

All you have to do is get a train to Central and catch the bus to Moore Park, or if you really want to, walk.

Both are as easy to get to as each other

Spot on.

Our club seems to spend most of its time trying to alienate its fans.

Hands up those that think the Tigers will draw less fans there than the Roosters though, even if the Roosters are in the 8 and the Tigers aren't.
