That is a nice article by Fox who get the exclusive rights to broadcast the game and no doubt the Thaiday & Slater testimonial in 2019 as well.
Fox are trying to increase subscribers in Qld.
They're one down since the gf :)

Back in the day weren't testimonials about collecting some money for retiring players who hadn't earnt much throughout their careers?

So in 2017 when Rugby League is fully professional and the players are handsomely compensated they are choosing to have a testimonial for 2 of the highest paid players ever who have been playing for 15 plus years?

Seems fair.

Yes

It’s just an exercise to exploit a loophole in the salary cap rules so these guys can earn more without it counting.

Yes. I don't think there has been one since the players started organising themselves into unions and getting agents on board. This stinks bad.

These two are going on to top dollar media contracts after their careers as well.

But the Sharks came 5th in The Shield.....
Unless you are taking into account Pissant Cup results, which, as a purist, you wouldn't.
Carch didn't bite . . . he apparently doesn't claim the Sharks to be the best team of 2016 because they won the pissant

Eh, the NRL is only giving it to long-serving players so its a bit of a non-issue. I dont see a problem with rewarding loyalty and a mechanism that keeps fan-favourites at their clubs into their twilight years...

If the ARLC start allowing guys who are changing clubs to claim these, then we will have a problem.

"Hey, Cam. Why dont you come on up to Brisbane? We've got this great testomonial planned for your first game. We're charging $100k per ticket and coincidentally we already have 10 sponsors keen to come watch............"

If we want the NRL to get involved wth keeping fan favourites as one club players, and rewarding player loyalty the surely there are better mechanisms.

A better cap dispensation or cap discount perhaps.

How does this differ from any other pre season game?

The complaints about workload come from 5 day turn arounds and state of origin - not a pre season game in Feb.

Bullshit. This is not a typical pre season game. To draw a crowd they will have to put fwd best 17 and play like a proper fixture or it will be a sham.

How many pre season minutes does Cammy get these days, esp after a world cup.

Not many me thinks.....

Not a typical pre season game but a total rort.

I've said this often over the years, the dressing room/training paddock/playing field is one world and everything else associated with RL is another . . . all about the physical effort difference between the two. When I was in charge of a team I tried to fit into their inner sanctum but you have to be one of them

The only true judge of players will always be the players themselves, I particularly like it when they're smart enough to use the media as a pisstake. Most of them however know when their talents fade they will be treated badly by Wankerland . . . very few will hear anything disparaging from those who know what sacrifices it takes

Purist. Keep up the good work. Hogans Heroes.

Makes plenty of sense. Read it again.

Any money paid over the cap is by definition not available to others.

Not to mention the twisted logic of a player being somehow responsible for policing his own clubs salaries.
