Man, I love Chinese food. Sure, it's a rather "catch all" cuisine in that you can fairly expect to encounter everything remotely edible at one stage or another, but on the whole I'm a big fan. Although the Malays certainly improved it :p

U have probably mentioned it but where u off to next ?

Not 100% sure yet. My contract here is up on August 10th and I've got a wedding in Sydney on the 23rd, so I'll be home for some amount of time. I'd like to be home for Christmas, so the most practical thing would be to spend five months at home.

But as much as I love my family and my hometown, five months without a night out or sex might do my head in. China has spoiled me, especially in the latter case.

Next year? I'm not sure. Thinking Vietnam or Thailand might be a fun place to teach, or might get a 'real job' someplace like Turkey or Japan.

Got a job interview here for tomorrow to manage a bar, but I doubt the money + hours arrangement will be enough to keep me here.

Now there is an idea.
I think I am going to have Honey Chicken for lunch tomorrow.

I may be lost, but what interview......the bar manager ????

That's the one.

No sandwich for me :( Stupid Dragonboat Festival means all Chinese run businesses are closed.

Had to settle for leftover pizza from the bar I'm going to interview at

Just had a decent Thai red curry with beef and washed it down with an amazing mango/mixed berry smoothie.

Get down south before you leave China Mis. The Cantonese cuisine is f**king awesome. It is one of the main reasons I get withdrawals between trips.

Cantonese, Hunan (Province just north of Guangdong) and Dongbei (Northeast) Cuisine are superb and the absolute stars of Ethnic Chinese food in China. Xinjiang cuisine is also excellent but obviously not 'Chinese' per se.

Southeast Asian Chinese food is easily the best however. Cities in the Archipelago with strong Chinese heritage like Melaka, KL, Penang, Singapore, Medan, Jakarta, Semarang and Surabaya all have traditional Chinese food cultures that rival Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Yum Cha doesn't really exist outside of the South in China. I found a Yum Cha style restaurant near my office in Central China but it lacked Cha Siu Bao (Steamed pork buns) and thus did not really count. Very very disappointing.

Eating some Ketoprak right now. It's a grab bag of veggies and tofu served with vermicelli noodles in a spicy peanut sauce. Sublime.

#1 - I love Dongbei food, but haven't managed to find much Cantonese in my neck of the woods. Jiangsu food is utter shit. I do like Sichuan food quite a bit, and Xinjiang food is fantastic if you can get them to use a half decent bit of lamb instead of dirty mutton.

#2 - Ah, I figured as much. Clearly, I'm in the wrong part of China :(
