PLEASE - no speculation of what "must" have happened, or whether people "must" be guilty because of their reactions.

why on earth did i get edited by saying 6 blokes were ALLEGEDLY involved

everyone KNOWS that
i didnt say they WERE involved
i said ALLEGEDLY...which is nothing more than the telegraph and herald are saying

overzealous editing is so annoying
i'd suggest the mods read up on libel laws

i agree.

the papers say allegedly so that they aren't pointing the blame finger

my post was deleted which probably was borderline but it was still so very true

i know that there is a fine line but the word allegedly is used by the media to cover themselves, so why cant we?

If these allegations turn out to be true, then the players are in deep s**t. NSW laws where changed in relation to this type of incident. There is already some people doing time rangeing from 25 to 55 years for something similar.
I hope its not true but if it turns out there is evidence like DNA that can sustanciate the claims then the boys in blue will be the boys in green.

There's the problem - it didn't say "allegedly" and was reported to me as such. Anyway, as the part I left shows, you were trying to tell us what we KNOW.

I'm well aware of the libel laws but in this case I'd say the contempt of court laws might also be appropriate, were charges to be laid.

Yeah I did say 'must'. My mistake. SS, you are really going over the top though. There is no way you could have made your mind up that quickly, all from second hand info. Nothing has been proven yet. Did you go off like this when the Sharks players were accused of something similar?

Did you go off like this when the Sharks players were accused of something similar?

The difference is back then there were no details, just one dodgy allegation

On this occasion, a significant part of the story has already been told
The hotel staff hearing "screams for help" is particularly damning...

No that doesn't sound good, but you can't believe any of it til it's proven. I have my own theories on what may have happened up there, based on all the info at hand, but they all mean nothing until the full story comes out.

The nrl seem to be taking a very dark view of all this even if the "full story" is yet to be revealed. David Gallop is a lawyer and therefore versed in the laws of evidence but he appears very "pissed off" with the bad publicity.

There seems to be an attitude that this is only the bulldogs problem but it hurts the games reputation, here where the afl love nothing better than a rl scandal, and in nz where the rugby boys, especialy those entrenched in their media, will have a field day winning back points from league after the recent success of the warriors.

Above all there is the female at the centre of all this and the trauma she and her family must be going through.

It wouldn't matter if these allegations were totally false, it would still be bad publicity for the NRL.

Looks like the media are applying the blow torch to Steve Mortimer heres the latest from fox sports.

Mortimer's angry media exchange
February 25, 2004

IT began with a smile and a laugh.

But by the time Bulldogs CEO Steve Mortimer terminated his first press conference since police began investigating a woman's allegation of sexual assault by several of his players, he was in no mood for jokes.

Mortimer appeared in good spirits as he strode to the throng of reporters at the Bulldogs' Belmore training ground, finally breaking his silence since allegations of the alleged assault emerged this week.

He even joked with the media scrum when the sheer amount of microphones shoved in his face obscured his view of his prepared statement.

"Hey, mate, I can't even see," Mortimer laughed as he looked down at his paper.

But the stress of a tumultuous week bubbled through as Mortimer pleaded for the public to "keep an open mind" and "not prejudge" the police investigation's outcome.

"Let the police do their job!" Mortimer at one stage bellowed, trying to keep a check on his emotions.

He also stressed his "second point" that the club would review its code of conduct and look at new initiatives including the effectiveness of player curfews and hiring security personnel for players while travelling.

All pretty positive stuff.

But Mortimer's emotions spilled over as soon as his prepared statement ended and the media pack pounced.

Here's an edited transcript of the fiery exchange that followed:

Question: "Whether or not there are any criminal charges laid are you embarrassed (that) according to witnesses that some of your players were drunk and allegedly approached young women and even groped them (at Coffs Harbour after a weekend trial match)?

Mortimer: "All I can say is that there is a police investigation at the moment, so let the police do their work. Let the police do their work!

Question: "This is just a PR exercise, haven't you got grounds already to suspend these players?

Mortimer: "As I said before we are conducting our own internal investigation which will be kept within my board...

Question: "But they've already breached your code of conduct..

Mortimer: "What are you saying?

Question: Isn't that grounds for suspension?

Mortimer: "Well we will be looking ... and when we make the appropriate actions, I've got a board meeting next Wednesday night, we'll make the appropriate actions, that's what I said, weren't you listening to that!

Question: "Will you be banning official after-match parties?

Mortimer: "I don't want to go into any more policy, I came out here and made two issues and I've already said those so I think I've been fair to the media today.

Question: "Can you confirm the four players that have agreed to the DNA tests?

Mortimer: "Look there is a police investigation going on, let the police do their work. There is an investigation going on. I don't want to keep repeating myself - let the police do their work, thank you."

I just found this quote from Steve Mortimer today as well, why would you want to be a CEO. I feel sorry for the bloke. I can only assume that from the comment below the bulldogs board could suspend all the players involved now if they wanted. #-o

"As you know the Bulldogs club has its own code of conduct which addresses unacceptable behaviour," Mortimer said.

If there are no charges I bet there will be no public punishment for the players who breached the code

this is from the Australian News paper;

"There was medical evidence to support the victim's claims in the medical examination. Further inquiries are set to continue."

Its starting to look a real S**t fight

Poor Steve Mortimer.

He leapt to the defence of the players, club and fans after the salary cap fiasco and told some of his own closest friends and allies that they had to stand down from the board. He was reluctant to walk away from his successful business. It wasnt easy. But he did it for the love of his club. And regardless of whether or not the allegations are entirely proven, this is the way these mongrels have decided to repay him.

I wouldnt donate one raw cent to save the Bulldogs but youve got to admire Mortimer's guts and integrity.

Well done Bulldogs. Any wonder that a family man like Nigel Vagana wanted out of there?
