What is the best way to count Premierships??

Nah not that I remember.... BRL clubs weren't rich in the way they are now... QLD didn't get pokies until after Joh finally got the arse as premier. Part of the push for a Brisbane team was so that stars playing in QLD that were being lured away for money in Sydney would be able to stay in Brisbane, make good money, and play in the Sydney comp. A lot of rose coloured glasses on here recall the glory days of the BRL, but it was struggling for a while before the broncos came in.... finals got good crowds, but regular season games were pretty dismal.

Thanks. I just always seem to remember, and you still hear old QLD blokes - Meninga, Vautin, etc - saying they went to Sydney comp for the 'challenge' and/or that it 'was the best comp, so test themselves', plus the money, inducements didn't hurt.

Anyway. BRL has some proud clubs. I'm sure if a Redcliffe Dolphins or some such got in to the NRL, which IMHO would be preferable in a way as they would have grassroots sewn, you'd like to see their past respected.

Just out of interest, pre the Broncos, were BRL clubs sounded out to join the NSWRL? I know a number of consortiums bid for the spot finally won by the Broncos but can't remember if Sydney ever offered a spot(s) to BRL club(s) to join.

From what i can put together, the answer is a resounding "yeh, sort of..."

It took about 5 years, but i just recently got my hands of the Mike Colman book "Super League: The Inside Story". He has it that, in '86, the NSWRL asked the BRL to submit a bid for a team to join the NSWRL.

So, in that sense, the BRL could have put up their No. 1 team and even demanded a few more enter once that was shown to be a success.

The problem was that the NSWRL offer was so shockingly one-sided:
- destroy the BRL and most of its clubs for just ONE spot in the NSWRL
- Give control of this new National comp to the NSWRL without any Qld representation in the decision.
- Send most of the Qld RL incomes to Syndey and hope they send some back.

What the NSWRL should have offered (if they could check their ego for just a moment) was:
- 2 teams from Brisbane with a set date in the future to review whether more should be introduced
- Move control of this new "national" comp to the ARL with an Independent board appointed to run that

Ah well, we can dream.....

Even the whole Brisbane team thing was a bun fight with factions siding here there and everywhere with different consortiums.

I remember reading in Arko and a couple of other books, that the leading consortium was advised to the NSWRL who just had to sign off after the vote. Then the days before and day of the vote the Broncos suddenly became the #1 bid and won it and Arko was a little WTF? but the NSWRL accepted the QLD decision for the Broncos bid.

But yeah. We can dream. Brisbane still need 2-4 NRL teams in my IMHO. Including a West Brisbane / Ipswich.

THe major problem for most of these clubs would have been competing in a saturated market that didnt offer much capital to begin with...

The Bronx prove their was cash to be made, though perhaps only enough for a handful of teams. I think the BRL could have put up 3 or 4 teams (maybe the 2 wealthiest clubs and a few new concoctions; Maybe a BRL United & a South Queensland)

It is a travesty that there is still only 1 team in Brisbane, and that more than anything else tells you about the short-sightedness and the pig-headedness that rules this f*cking game.

I was told by an old BRL club admin that the Broncos had promised to give a cut of profits to 4 of the BRL clubs if they voted for them to get in.
The Broncos had efficient accountants which saw minimal 'profits' and those clubs were screwed on the deal.
Don't know how true that story is, but old mate reckons it led to the demise of Brothers and ensured no other teams from Brissy got in.

In the SL book, the author reckons the Bronxs just went around and bribed the clubs for their vote...

There is 1 team in Brisbane because that's what the Broncos have always wanted. The sooner that is corrected the better. And I agree, The Crushers were dead set shafted.

Crushers, like Perth, started off well. A month in to 1995, and the landscape completely changed and was irrecoverably damaged for the next 20 years.

It's a pity the good work in expansion, crowds and TV that culminated in the record breaking 1994 season was lost so quickly and easily. It's also a pity with Arko, Quayle, Ribot's vision and Rupert's and Kerry's cash, the game couldn't work together and didn't prosper in to the new century.

The worst thing was that both sides mostly agreed on the changes that needed to happen in the ARL...

Fewer teams in a better spread of locations (the original SL proposal was: Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Canberra, GC, Wollongong, Melbourne Perth, Newcastle, 4 Sydney team for North/East/South/West [probably Canterbury, Easts, Manly St George or group tickets] and one more [probably from Sydney])

The ARL were looking at almost exactly that (though with another Brisbane team, which pissed off the Bronx).

The only major sticking point was the was who would be in charge; News didnt trust the ARL because it was full of RL Ol' Boys and ARL didnt trust Murdoch because they were only in it for the money.

If they could have agreed to from the ARLC (independent from both sides) back then, just imagine where RL would be right now...

their past premierships can't be counted as nrl premierships.

They did have another team once that went by the wayside after Super League - South Queensland Crushers...they should never have gotten rid of them!

I agree, but I don't think "Crushers" is the best name. South Queensland Scorpions sounds better.

The Crushers arguably had their best year in the year they folded
Their under 20s won the comp - or made the GF in the year they were closed, which showed their youth policy was on track for future success for the club. Probably the main reason the Broncos wanted them gone.

They had some good players signed when they folded - I remember Mick Crocker and Chris Flannery came to the Roosters when the Crushers were booted

^^^ fair enough

But, I hope that, if the next QLD expansion team is an old BRL/QRL team like the Brothers or the Diehards, they just claim their BRL premierships and just tell everyone to f*ck off.

"Valley boys looking for their 18th premiership" feels like a good way to get under the skin of Sydney-centric fans ;)

Do you have any teams on 21 or above?

If so, let them in the NRL. The meltdown from souffs fans about a club claiming equal or more than them will be glorious.
