What instrument do you play?

A 10-YEAR-old Canadian singer, dubbed the female Justin Bieber, looks set to follow her young countryman on the fast track to stardom after being signed by Simon Cowell.
The music mogul and creator of The X Factor swooped for Heather Russell after being tipped off by former Canadian Idol judge Zack Werner, British newspaper The Independent reported.

And the insidious nature of this industry shows itself again

What about Paul Robeson? He had one of the best voices of the 20th Century. I even bought an LP of his once. The son of a black american slave, Robeson stood up against the McCarthy trials in the 1950s and sung for the workers on construction site of the Sydney Opera House. Your kind of fella Mr Angry. Not a kiddie exploiter.

Sounds a decent man, music a hobby, and again shows how people like musos of thier era.

And then there is what music is today, and industry preying the young and the copyright laws, meant to protect true inventors. Disgusting trade.

I wonder how many folks here know what an LP is. ;-)

As far as I know, the US govt wrecked Paul Robeson's life. Very popular in Australia but rubbed out in his home country. They took away his passport because he was a black rights activist, and always had something to say about it while abroad.

Music was more than a hobby. He used his music popularity to deliver a very important message. It probably killed him in the end but history shows that he was right.

So what about Beethoven?

Because he sang, or because he championed human rights?

Did he die poor? Or what happens today? Rich with no talent, or like Beethoven poor and still looking for a real job?

Both.

Well Robeson was rewarded, but those awards were taken away by the US govt, only reinstated after his death.

People go on about the injustices handed out to Ali, Mandella and Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. But they were popular causes.

Yeah yeah, songs have been written about those fellas as well.

Robeson did die poor, in a manner of speaking. The McCarthyists put him out of business. The greatest black singer of the 20th century has a relatively modest following.

Btw, Robeson played football as well - american football has its roots in rugby football - so in a way he is one of us. Those records were also stripped but I understand they have since been reinstated thanks to some determined people.

I was asked recently by my nephew, visiting his only uncle after graduating from uni, how did gramophones (he meant record players) play the flip side and was shocked when it was explained that the listener had to manually turn the record over. Gee, how I miss the sound of sand scratches between meaningful guitar solos ... whatever happened to Iron Butterfly?

I once heard a teenage girl describing how her parents had these 'big black CDs' stored in their garage.
