Statement from Wests Tigers

Following speculation in the media over the past two weeks regarding the Club’s review of the Coaching structure at the Wests Tigers, the Board and Executive Management team of the club would like to state the following.

The Board and management of the Wests Tigers are committed to providing our members, corporate and community partners and fans the most competitive team both on and off the field. With this in mind, the club has decided not to extend the contract of three existing members of our support staff for 2014. For avoidance of doubt, these decisions are not performance based and these individuals involved have been informed.

The demands and expectations of an NRL coach and his staff are enormous. Success on the field and man management off the field are two of the most import things a coach will be judged on. There is no doubt we have had our game day challenges this year with both injury and performance but there is also no doubt that we have witnessed some trends off the field that we need to fully understand and rectify immediately.

In regards to Head Coach Mick Potter, there is no doubt that he has had some outstanding success as Coach and he was obviously a tremendously gifted player.

That aside, the Board and Management of the Club need to fully understand the position we find ourselves in and work with Mick to come to the best outcome for both himself and the club. There are many options we can consider. The most favourable of these options is to work with Mick to develop a coaching structure and provide the personnel the club needs to create a consistent winning attitude. This is a key priority for club CEO Grant Mayer.

The structural recommendations and personnel to fit these roles will be presented to the Board at the end of August.

Over the closing five rounds of the competition, the Club fully expect that the coaching staff and the players continue to take pride in their personal performance and understand that winning starts from within. This is a proud club and we fully expect that every person that is fortunate enough to represent the club understands what it means to be a Wests Tiger.

No further comment will be made about the Coaching review until the Board meet and consider the structural recommendations.

It seems he is being moved into director of coaching or something.
Not sacked but doing the Sheens thing. Offered another role.

My favourite part is about the players continuing to take pride in personal performance.

I needed that kind of laugh.

The Wests Tigers club gives me zero confidence or reason to sink any on my hard earned into any of their endeavors whilst ever the current board is in place

Reading again, it says 3 members of the support staff.
Skando, Royce, ?????. Potter isnt considered support.

I still think he will move to another role and structure our coaching staff.
That's what I make of it.

Geez, I dunno, sounds like support and equally sounds like 'thanks, but...'.

Find this curious.

Hopefully the papers / mole just have their wires crossed and its just the support staff moved on (good call).

They should of said Potter will be here next year though.

What is curious is

"In regards to Head Coach Mick Potter, there is no doubt that he has had some outstanding success as Coach and he was obviously a tremendously gifted player.

Sounds like they might choose to shuffle Potter out of the Head Coach role but then it says

"most favourable of these options is to work with Mick to develop a coaching structure and provide the personnel the club needs to create a consistent winning attitude."

Which sounds like they want to keep Potter on and allow Potter to appoint support staff that he chooses ie - what many have been saying needs to happen.

So yeah, a strange one. As you say, it sounds like 3 of the coaching staff are being let go. Skando and Royce come to mind but not Potter as it mentioned "support staff". Very mixed and ambiguous statement, maybe to test fan/member reaction?

I think the man management part is the huge component of that whole spiel. I reckon some players are really giving it to the coach.

Just before Benji cops it on here I'd state that I really doubt that he is the problem here because my take is that the board were right behind getting him out of the club.

I hope Potter stays. I reckon he has made some mistakes but overall I have preferred him significantly to Shines. I reckon he deserves at least another year and possible another couple of years.

So what happens if the prima donna players don't like next years coach, we sack him too because he makes decisions in the best interests of the club and not the players/boys club?

May as well bring back Benji, Tim, Tim, Heigno and Beau, because at least the lunches are good.

I read that as three assistants have been sacked, but Potter hasn't.

If thats true, then the club has finally got all the right housekeeping done and in one year, which is f**king magnificent feat given the decade of Sheens infestation in the joint.

Big kudos to Potter.

It's a strange one but I read it the same as Madunit. It's the kind of media release that put doubt in the mind but clearly states support staff. What's confusing is the past tense they use to describe Potter and mentioning his stature as a player, which I feel has no relevance to this situation.

One can only hope Royce, Georgalis and Skando have had the tap on the shoulder but if it's the water boy, ball boy and ground announcer than the club has truly lost the plot.

While we are at can we get a new doctor as well?

I read it like Matchball. Potter is gone as head coach but they don't want another Sheens case, so want to set him up in another role.
