What makes you feel old?

6 or 7yrs ago, the year I retired from playing local footy, I realised I had teammates who were 17yrs old. They were born the same year I started playing that grade and now they were teammates. That made me feel old.

So much more makes me feel old now that I've hit 40. Not least knowing people born in the early 2000's ... and they are functional adults. They never saw the 1990s (or 19-anythings!) or have heard of the millenium bug. And they're adults.

Something about that just isn't right.

It's a thing when you are playing against kids.... and realise they have got their best years ahead of them and you're past it..

I toured with my cricket team earlier this year to the NT. Our captains' son came along - who I knew since he was 3... a weapon with bat n ball and may go places in his career. But some of the teams we played had players of that age too. I'm an opening bat and felt like I was standing in molasses and my eyes are like Mr Magoo as I muddled my way through guys I would have easily carted 5-10 years ago. Lost whatever I thought I had...

Those games reassured me my time was up playing competitive cricket. I'm gonna miss it...

I turn 48 tomorrow. If only I could have lodged a score bigger than my age. That'll never happen again.

Cest-la-Vie.

On a discussion on the Warriors forum someone asked why the Shaun Johnson Cup (for U18 and U20 players) wasn’t called the Stacy Jones cup, and I realised it was because players in those age groups are too young to actually remember Jones career at the Warriors (except 2009 which we try to forget anyway).

I’m 45. My highest cricket score was 49…run out. When I was 16. That’s almost 30 years ago.
I went back this year after four years off. I spend a fair chunk of time in coaching and development. The 13-14 year olds I have now and I have bets on who can do more each week. It’s a fools lark I know. I’m on a hiding to nothing. 6.01pm and they’re all pinging me after pulling up live MyCricket scores.
I don’t know what is worse - their banter or my aching joints.

My mate in NZ plays on the same team as his son or did a few years back. Fair play to the bloke, he’dbe been 43-44 at the time. If be wrecked after a couple of tackles.
