Tombstone 8.5/10 - The ultimate action-western for mine, stellar cast and dialogue make a classic revenge story fascinating. Kilmer & Russel are incredible, and Michael Beihn proved he could do great things if given the chance.
Se7en 8/10 - The granddaddy of serial killer movies, very few movies invoke that sense of dread and gloom. The biggest impact is that ultimately it's a tale of..
loss and humiliation. John Doe completely and utterly beat them at their game, one of the rare times the villain pulls all the strings and our heroes are left helpless.
.
One thing that irked me a bit this time though was Brad Pitts performance, he dialed it up just a tad too far and you almost felt Jeffery Goines about to pop out. Someone like Val Kilmer of that time would have brought more nuance. Spacey and Freeman nail it of course.
Platoon 8/10 - One of my favorite war movies since I'm a sucker for character driven plots. This is all about Charlie Sheen's internal war with Dafoe and Berenger playing angel and devil. Doesn't pull any punches either in displaying how Vietnam must have been + lots of familiar faces everywhere.
Vanilla Sky 7.5/10 - Overlooked sci-fi / drama / mind-trip which was probably mistaken for another Jerry McGuire. While Cruise always commits, he wasn't shy at all of turning around his character's vanity. Well worth a look if you're into that type of thing.
Prisoners 8/10 - Much better the second time around. I always appreciated the powerhouse performances, but there are many crucial plot points that add up beautifully if you catch everything.
Basic Instinct. Still a classic. Looking back on it vs. movies now it seems quite tame.
Big fan of Michael Douglas who is great to watch in this. Sharon Stone nails her role really well.
Still get a laugh at Wayne Knight(Newman from Seinfeld) in the interrogation scene.
I thought it was going to be a whole lot of 'all white people are bad, black people are good' but I like Jordan Peele so gave it a go.
Id call it more of a thriller then a horror. Funny and thrilling in equal amounts. Wasn't the witch hunt I thought it would be and was a good watch. Not worth the 99% rating on rotten tomatoes but that's to be expected from the hipster wankers who use that site.
Bit of a spoiler here:
I think it would have been better with a different ending, it surprised me they went with the feel good Hollywood one. Read online about a few alternate ones they had and I think any of them would have suited the film better.
